I voted average, I agree with wayfarer. I don't think the more subdued sound fits them as well, it sounds a little lazy if anything. Overall the album is still decent and I enjoyed it, but their other work feels far better.

Actually, that's very good to hear. I'm glad I pressed you for more details. Their typical chaos began to sound redundant and at times, I heard no creative motive behind what I heard. I enjoy musicians that are aware of their sound, yet still explore outside of their comfort zone.

This album I think lacks what was originally unique to The Mars Volta... but I am enjoying the more subdued sound. I don't know if the instrumentation comes out clearer than the other albums, but it's definitely less chaotic.
