7/10
Primarily acoustic. Lots of fiddle. Some solid bass work. And unfortunately a fair bit of filler. There are several commendable tracks though, and Costello covers every formulaic country attitude you’d expect. From scorned lover to front-porch stomper. All while maintaining his caliber of lyrical composition. It is casually reminiscent of King of America, just because it’s the product of the same producer and a similar genre, but this album really plays with no hint of obligation to his previous sounds. Highlights: I Felt Chill Before the Winter I Dreamed of My Old Lover Sulphur to Sugarcane (a little ditty about nationwide “conquests”) |
