Cat Power? Danger Mouse? Hell yeah, it's supposed to come out later this month too so I'm surprised by the lack of information on it (only five tracks announced?) This looks to be the best Beck album since Sea Change too. I've been following this so I'll keep this thread updated.

How about the best album since Odelay?

sleepy jack 06-05-2008 08:05 PM

I'm going to wait until there's more than one studio song leaked to say something like that.

Wishful thinking, I guess. :p:

well that leaked song was enough for me...I have high hopes for this album.

sleepy jack 06-12-2008 02:17 PM

Comes out July 7th or 8th depending on your location, full album details (finally) revealed.

sl1ck 06-12-2008 03:16 PM

This album is going to be good, I'm planning on hitting up Best Buy the day it comes out.

Piss Me Off 07-06-2008 04:33 AM

Review time!

Well, it's pleasant. By no means is it a bad album, it's quite easy to listen to, nothing challenging, and you could probably put it on without your mates complaining much.
But that's about it really. I just don't really want to listen to this when there's plenty more stuff out there which is more interesting and strives to do more. Like with Odelay, i want the songs to come at me and make me go 'woah!', here very little stands out. One i do like is Soul Of a Man, while it does sound a bit like The Kills - Fried My Little Brains that's a great bassline.

Maybe i'll listen to it a bit more in the future but like i said, why do that when i could spend some time finding something which takes some risks?

adidasss 07-06-2008 06:10 AM

I'd say it's pretty good. Upon the first few listens I thought it was rather average, but the more I listened the more tracks started to stand out. The immediate favorite was Profanity prayers. I also like, Chemtrails, Modern guilt, Walls, Orphans is growing on me etc. It's the most cohesive album he's made in a while so you don't really get tired of it halfway through (unlike The Information or Guerro) but I can't say it's as good as his last. The first half of The Information was pretty spectacular (and immediate). Some have said this one is more akin to Sea change and I can see that, it does seem to be much more mellow than the previous two albums, which isn't really bad I guess because Danger mouse does his thing impeccably. I also can't help but feel that a lot of the material sounds kind of recycled (Youthless kinda sounds like Cellphone's dead no?).

So yeah, I vote Very good.

Son of JayJamJah 07-06-2008 09:03 AM

The answer I'd like to respond with is "good", not "average" and not "very good."

So far I like it, but it didn't jump at me or anything.

Couple real good tracks I like "Profanity Prayers", "Walls", "Modern Guilt" and "Soul of a Man" a lot.

Has the potential to be in the top three Beck albums...? Maybe? I don't know yet.

ProggyMan 07-06-2008 02:47 PM

Eh, I only like three tracks. I wonder if he'll play anything from this when I see him at the Outside Lands festival.

jackhammer 07-06-2008 02:49 PM

First listen gets a 'Good' from me. Does'nt immediately jump out at you but it has the potential to be a real grower. 'Replica' is a great tune.

Son of JayJamJah 07-10-2008 05:03 PM

This album growing on anyone else?

Aside from a few tracks that are still a little dicey I am really starting to appreciate the sum of these parts.

Modern Guilt, Soul of Man and Profanity Prayers are getting multiple individual plays a day. Youthless and Gamma Ray are really growing on me and Walls is still awesome too.

How under appreciated is Beck?

When he's on his game, he's a top five artist of the past decade and change. Mellow Gold, Odelay and Modern Guilt might be my top three albums. Feels that way right now.

jackhammer 07-11-2008 04:59 PM

The problem with this album is simple: As a Beck album it is merely average. As a genre album it is better than 90% of the dross out there. He set himself such high standards early on, it is hard to be completely blown away by his material. However this is still getting plenty of airplay at work and it pisses all over the 'Other' recent big release which is Coldplays latest.

adidasss 07-11-2008 05:49 PM

What genre is this incidentally?*unsure*

jackhammer 07-11-2008 06:07 PM

Damn good pop music for me...

Check_The_OR 07-14-2008 12:19 AM

after a few listens to the album, the tracks I really like are Modern Guilt and Volcano

flashing 08-17-2008 08:51 AM

It's fresh, simple and easy to dance too.
8/10 for me

Tyler Durden 09-11-2008 03:08 PM

At first I thought it was among his worst
but the more you listen to it the better it becomes
I really like it!
7.5/10

sweetleaf 09-16-2008 06:43 AM

Every album will usually get better the more you listen to it....As does this one. I wish that Beck would go folk again...

FireInCairo 09-16-2008 07:53 AM

thats the last thing we need more folk albums!
granted he was good at it
but its far more interesting wondering what hell do next

enzo 11-09-2008 06:19 PM

Average. Beck used to have a sense of humour.

Its a fantastic album but I do see that in it. Not really disappointing though because Cellphone's Dead is good itself.

ins0mniac 11-18-2008 04:31 PM

I enjoy Modern Guilt the more I listen to it. It's catchy and addictive as a whole. However, no specific songs jump out at me. For a normal band I would give it a high rating because it's outstanding music. But it's Beck. One of the greatest musicians of this era. I waited since The Information and it was nowhere near the quality he had in that album or Guero. So I said Average.

FaSho 11-18-2008 04:31 PM

This dissapointed me compared to his other albums, but was by no means bad. I'll vote Average.

the_dp 12-04-2008 04:30 PM

i actually voted excellent. One of the few albums to come out this year that is very cohesive. Every track blends beautifully into the next to form a nice narrative. Gets better with every listen.

Son of JayJamJah 12-04-2008 07:16 PM

I still like this one.

Only a couple tracks that I skip over and a few of my favorite Beck tracks ever.

The Vintage Sound 02-02-2009 10:16 PM

Beck is a classic, I have enjoyed his music since I first heard Mellow Gold. Modern Guilt is yet another evolution of Beck...my favorite track, Gamma Ray.

JJJ567 02-03-2009 01:06 PM

It's a very well done album. It's cohesive and moving in places. I really liked The Information, but I think this album outdoes it in many places. The Information did have more immediate standouts though.

I'm just glad he didn't dish out another Odelay clone like Guero. I have some affection for Guero, but it's not one I listen to often.

This Music Sucks 03-17-2009 12:19 PM

I can dig it. Its a shame he's a scientologist though.

Mrd00d 11-12-2011 03:54 PM

I really love this album. Another fantastic piece of art from Beck. I don't care what his beliefs are. I feel the dark sadness in this album a lot. It really conveys a lot of emotion in a very accessible way. It's almost slick how he does it.
