English Bossa Nova song - "Had to be You" - 2000s(?)
Hi everyone
I just caught the end of this song in Tesco and have been trying to find it for the lost two hours. It sounded like "Mas Que Nada". I do remember the song, and think it is from the mid 2000s but it could be a classic bossa song from the 60s. Here are all the clues I have: 1) Sounds like Mas Que Nada. Very similar percussion and quite similar melody. VERY similar mood/feeling, maybe even more chilled. 2) Pretty sure the whole thing is in the English. The only lyrics I caught were "had to be you ... had to be you". This was towards the end. Might have been "Got to be you". 3) Seemed like a contemporary western interpretation of Bossa, but still accurate to the original sound That's about it!! I remember the melody of the "had to be you" bit very clearly: "Had" = F# To" = D "Be" = B "Youuu" = E Really desperate to find this one so thanks in advance! |
Male or female singer?
Mas Que Nada is generally uptempo - often very uptempo, so was this slow and sensual or more medium tempo? Tho it was in English, did the singer sound Brazilian - maybe a hint of a Portuguese accent? Closer to easy listening or more modern? It Had to Be You is a Isham Jones standard that's often done in Bossa style, so I'm going for that as what you might've heard, but, like Mas Que Nada it's done pretty often (again, a standard) and could be a wide range of performers. |

Thanks for replying mate. It was definitely more uptempo. Quite poppy too. The drum pattern and actual sound of the drumkit was very similar to Mas Que Nada. Unfortunately it's not a rendition of the Isham Jones song, I did come across that while searching. The accent might well have been Portuguese/Brazilian. Male singer (possibly singers...) I might even pop into the Tesco tomorrow and ask for their current playlist lol. Desperate to find it, was/is an absolute tune. Thanks again !! |
OK, well, that's some extra info to go on.
Also, the statement, "The drum pattern and actual sound of the drumkit was very similar to Mas Que Nada" doesn't make any sense. Mas Que Nada is a tune and not a rhythm with a special sound ... and it's been done countless times in many ways, so if you're just referring to Brazil or MPB in particular, then yes, OK. But, I'll think about it some and see what I can come up with. Too bad that the tune isn't actually It Had to Be You - that would've made it easier. Maybe Tesco's has their own music service and it can be searched somehow? |
My apologies - I was referring to the popular Sergio Mendes version. Actually now that I think about it, it is closer to the Black Eyed Peas version that contains a sped-up sample from the original Menses version.
Thanks again |
The melody is also fairly similar to that great Jorge Ben track - Carolina Bela
The mood of my song is essential a blend of this and Mas Que Nada. I almost thought this was the song for a minute. The "has/had to be you" bit would fit seamlessly into Carolina Bela. |
Based on what you’re saying, I’m surprised that the tune is all in English.
Maybe you should look into Tom Zé and prowl around his catalog of stuff. Even if it’s not him, you may be happy that you looked there anyway. :D (Maybe Caetano Veloso too). |
Is it by Smoke City?
(Not necessarily this song but ...) Smoke City - With You |

Thanks Rostasi and Napolitan. I'm going to trawl through these artists tonight. Fingers crossed!
And Rostasi, there's every chance the majority isn't in English - I'm now at the point where all I can remember is "Has to be you" melody... memory is a funny thing |
