Default I love her, she loves me ... seagull flying over the sea?

Hi all,

I'm looking for an old song, I think by someone called Richard something who also did another more well-known song, and the only lines I can remember are something about a seagull flying over the sea and then "I love her, she loves me". His voice breaks on that line to make the "her" into 3 syllables... any ideas?

More details - if it helps I'm fairly sure the singer is a black man. Also I think there's a line in there about him asking her parents for their blessing, or a similar theme.

What kind of music was it? Pop? Rock? Deep discofox?

Do you know what his better known song is or at least what it sounds like? Also how old is the song? Are we talking fifties or sixties or is it later?
