This Earworm is Killing Me! I need HELP identifying a track
Dear Reader,
I am an English 38 year old man. When I was 14 years old in 1991 a school friend made me a mixtape that consisted of music from his brother's collection. There was no listings - there wasn't even a case - but the tunes have stayed with me to this day. Some have been easier to identify than others but there is one that I CANNOT locate. And it's bugging me so badly. Partly because it was such a good track. We were mop-topped indie kids (for want of a better description) and the tape, apart from a few exceptions, consisted of British shoe-gazing groups and a few baggy/Manchester tracks. Because I can't sing it to you here is what I can tell you about it - (1) The lyrics contained a droning rendition of part of Blind Willie McTell's 'Dying Crapshooters Blues'. Here is the part of those lyrics I know it used - "My head is achin', my heart is thumpin' But I'm going down boundin' and a-jumpin' Folks no need to stand around cryin' Want everybody up and dancin' when I'm dying. I want one foot up, toenail draggin' Throw me in that hoodoo wagon Come here, mama, with that can o' booze" (2) It could not have been recorded after 1991 (3) It began with a cowbell/3 note guitar riff before the drums kicked in and the whole song rocked hard. (4) The voice was droning, garage-rock in style almost and was heavily reverbed (5) I recollect that just before the track ends the singer was just moaning/howling and evoking the simple strained guitar notes. (6) I had always thought it was a House of Love track - and maybe it is? to me it sounded like Guy Chadwick. (7) If the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club covered the song it would be a perfect fit. (8) All the tracks, apart from the vocals went silent/were dimmed when the singer slowly and delicately sand "crap.....shooter's.....blues" before it started up again with the sawing guitar riff and steady garage rock beat. (9) This was not a shoe-gazing/baggy band. It was more like an Echo & The Bunnymen sound. Or like I said garage rock Anyone who could help me with this would really be helping slot the last piece of the jigsaw into place For anyone who is interested - here is the tracklist (in no particular order) of that tape from 1991 - Taste - Ride Mesmerise - Chapterhouse Vapour Trail - Ride Cheese & Onions - The Rutles A Brand New Friend - Lloyd Cole & The Commotions Mersey Paradise - The Stone Roses Heaven Sent an Angel - Revolver Pearl - Chapterhouse It Isn't Forever - The Field Mice Circlesquare - The Wonder Stuff Elephant Stone - The Stone Roses Fools Gold - The Stone Roses Falling Down - Chapterhouse ????? - ??????? - |
