That Viking women fought alongside their men in time of need is highly likely.
It is, however, very unlikely that women went along on raids. The sailors of many cultures had rules and misgivings about bringing women - besides captives - along on sea voyages. Too much potential trouble, sailing from Norway to England, France or Morocco is difficult enough without Sven, Haakon and Snorri getting into brawls over some chick. Germanic cultures may have had shield maidens, but before you get too excited, the chances that any of those warrior women would make the bikini calendar are very slim.
