Techno Journal
I decided since this is the majority of what I listen to these days I'd benefit from having a journal to jot down various albums in.
Recommendations open I'm really into UK Bass/Deconstructed Club/Deep House/Trance/Psytrance/Psybient/Drum and Bass/Industrial Techno/Dub Techno/Dubstep/Future Garage/Wonky/Vaporwave (preferably releases like Esprit and Vektroid)/Bubblegum Bass/Darkwave/New Beat/EBM/etc. Spoiler for recs:
Spoiler for reviews:
For my first review, I'll be doing Amon Tobin's Permutations |
How about some footwork?
And get on some Demdike Stare and Raime. |
Amon Tobin - Permutation
Genre: Nu Jazz, Drum n Bass, IDM Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil https://rateyourmusic.com/release/al...n/permutation/ A very eclectic release combining jazz instrumentation and cacophonous drums. Borders on dark at points and whimsical at others, though it keeps a relatively light hearted atmosphere throughout. If anything, the length gets to it though it manages to retain interesting throughout the runtime. 8/10 |
Jlin - Black Origami
Genre: Footwork, D-club, IDM, Afro-House Location: Gary, Indiana, USA https://rateyourmusic.com/release/al...black-origami/ It's pretty tight, it's a rhythm fest every which way you look at it, and I love how the genre utilizes extended woodblock passages in the drum programming it's just a wild sound. The basswork however I would say is better in other releases I've heard in the genre and overall the album needs more d-club and to do something different, it kinda drags in the full run time but the african house influenced drum programming does give a lot to work with and in terms of those textures this album rips. 7/10 |
Raime - Quarter Turns Over a Living Line
Genre: Ambient Dub, Dark Ambient, Industrial Location: London, UK https://rateyourmusic.com/release/al...a-living-line/ What I love <3 it's dark and brooding and reminds of The Haxan Cloak but if yr in the mood this takes you places. It's headbobbing and terrifying all at the same time and it's the first 9/10 I've had in a few days for sure. 9/10 |
Daft Punk - Human After All
Genre: Electroclash, Electro-Industrial Location: Paris, France My new favorite daft punk album, blends this talk-boxy effect and other industrial-esque soundblips for a journey through hypnotic dance hit after hit. Kicking myself for just now getting more into the group. |
Skream - Skream!
Genre: Dubstep, Grime, 2-step Location: Bromley, UK https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/skream Great infectious OG dubstep. Midnight Request line is a dance classic that I've been listening to since high school when I joined the forum. Unlike later dubstep releases and even other releases of the time this feels a lot closer to reggae at points and retains the ragga groove. Definitely check this out if you're a fan of any type of UK electronic. |
Orbital - In Sides
Genre: IDM, Ambient Techno Location: Sevenoaks, UK Oh, it's pretty bangin'. But is it banging enough? Could be a lot more banging for a techno release but it fixates more on subtled drum beats and off kilter toms. Which isn't a bad thing, on a release like this it only compliments the muted synths but at the same time this gives little to latch onto. 7/10 |
Lee Gamble - KOCH
Genre: Outsider House, Techno, Industrial Techno, Ambient Techno Location: Birmingham, UK https://rateyourmusic.com/release/al...e_gamble/koch/ An exciting ambient outsider house effort, all you need to know to sell you on this one is that one track's drums are composed of coins flipping and other various metallic noises layered over subtle keys. |

Ninos du Brasil - Vida eterna
Genre: Industrial Techno, Salsa (Batacuda) Location: Italy I’ve really been into techno recently with really intricate drum sections and this definitely delivers. It’s dystopian salsa techno and it sounds like hell in the best way possible. 9/10 |

M Geddes Gengras - Time Makes Nothing Happen Genre: Minimal Techno/IDM/Industrial Techno/Glitch This is one of my favorite albums of the year for very good reason the beats are super hypnotic, the textures are transcendental, and the cover art is gorgeous. |
Wow just realized I haven't posted a new album in like a yearish? on this journal?
So here goes. A new one. For you to read. And enjoy. You'll (tide) (season) love it sooooo much hehe Lil Data - Folder Dot Zip https://assets.boomkat.com/spree/pro...arge/cover.jpg Genre: Algorave/IDM Apparently Algorave is a genre of generative music that aims to make realistic rave sounds from AI sources. How much of this album is personally crafted I'm not sure, but damn does it sound weird? Good thing I love weird electronic music bc this shi schlaps so good to ur own cheek whichever one of the four you prefer. It's real glitchy, at times a detriment because it's hard to find something to latch on to, even drums for a lot of the tracks. I found one track incredibly humourous too, it was a conversation between all the different Siri voices and I forgot exactly what they talked abt but idk it was pretty funny to me. Yeah. 8/10 |
Alabama 3 - Exile on Coldharbour Lane
Genre: Country Blues, Acid House, Alternative Dance Very influenced by Screamadelica but a slightly different take on the Rolling Stones kinda vibe, with some squirmin' synths and an outlaw country bite to the lyrics as well as the guitars. Hardly a techno record but one worth checking out if you're into weird acid house or the baggy scene. |
