Dolphy is an unassailable genius. He took Charlie Parker’s digestion of Stravinsky and Bartók and bridged it over into free jazz. There’s these fragments of Ornette’s free jazz and Coltrane’s Africa/Brass - it’s Dolphy and he’s so ****ing celebratory with his freedom. It screams **** yes we did it! And the influence of his incredibly intelligent and disciplined wildness changed the landscape of jazz forever. Don’t forget the work he did for Mingus. And Oliver Nelson’s The Blues and the Abstract Truth. Dolphy did great stuff as a leader but I don’t think judging him by every record issued under his name is the right way to gauge Dolphy’s contributions to jazz.

Case in point, this reissue of Where?. Dolphy is playing his role beside Carter and also making space for Mal Waldron who was an idiosyncratic (and great) musician himself.
