down with spofity; revolución de soulseek
Recently, the pain and suffering had been building. Reaching a tipping point. I could not hold on any longer. Something had to change. I simply needed to get a new RYM account. So I did it. One simple chrome extension and bang. No issues with my permabanned IP address, which is quite upsetting to me since I had previously tried several different programs to no avail. As a result, a new breath of life has been injected directly into my veins. My need to discover new music is back. Immediately I felt compelled to discard my one true coping mechanism during the time of lethargic habitual listening: Spotify. Be gone foul beast. Enter the one true king of music sharing. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...seek-png-3.png Using RYM and the god-emperor soulseek in perfect harmony, I hope to share the best and worst of my discoveries in this thread. Feel free to suggest albums and tracks, and I will get around to talking about them if I think they are worthy. |

Is slsk iPhone friendly yet?
I used to love it. |
Oh and **** Spotify, Soulseek is the biz.
|
Looking forward to see what you're gonna do with this thread but Spotify is great for music discovery imo
|
Spotify is trash compared to using sites like RYM, bandcamp and last.fm etc. The process of specifically looking for music to download has always resulted in my best discoveries, but the convenience of Spotify just lured me in over the years.
I don't know if soulseek is iPhone friendly yet. I'd assume not. |
I still pay for Spotify due to having f*cking awesome playlists on there.

So you're listening to recs/reviewing recs? Have you heard Snö by Snail's House?
|
I’ll be doing some recs, some of my own findings and other kinds of general music discussion that may not be specific to a single album or track. I’ll check out the two refs so far.

https://i.imgur.com/dJc6yDX.jpg Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses (1993) Tagged: Gothic Metal, Doom Metal Recommended by: The Batlord A gothic metal album, with that album cover, recommended by Batlord and glowing reviews wherever I looked. Gotta be honest, I was pretty pumped to listen to it. But I am sad to report that I thought it was completely bland and lacked energy from beginning to end. For starters, the lead vocalist is garbage. No personality at all and brings the vibe down as opposed to adding any value at all. It's also way too fucking long considering it's distinct lack of diversity in sound. As I write this I'm listening to it again and all I can think of is skipping every track once it has been scrobbled. Not a good sign. It's strange because I usually like almost anything that's in this scene, and it's hard to say what is specifically "wrong" in the music, but it misses the mark on every aspect musically. Nothing riffs, nothing vocals, nothing moody atmosphere and overstays it's welcome. I would go through my favourite and least favourite songs, but nothing made enough of an impression either way. It's not bad enough to truly dislike anything on here, or good enough to give a serious thumbs up. Just plain and boring. https://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/d8jWV2l.png |

I didn't mean "down" as in he made it sadder, I meant the vocals had a negative impact on the record.
There is a bit of variety but it's still gloomy boring gothic rock. But it is a pretty weak criticism on my end I guess. Moaning that an album in a genre stays in the genre. I think disliking it made me say that, so I take it back. It's sonically varied but the tone remained relatively similar at least to me. |

Consistently skippable.

Or maybe the songs skipped you.

Sorry bruh

It's honestly their worst album (even though I like it). Allright, allright, The Origin of the Feces might be a hard sell as a superior Type O Negative album, but I like it more personally...
But I wouldn't recommend that you give another album a go. It's unlikely that you would connect with any of them. Here's their most catchy song ever. You might like that. At least I know that I love it: Don't know if you'd listen to a rec made by me, but here's one I'd be really curious to hear your thoughts on: Judie Tzuke - I am the Phoenix |

Great album.

Awesome cover artwork. Seriously. I'm gonna have to check it out too, just because it looks like a 10/10.
|
It's a fantastic album. Like Beach Boys done with a Naked City approach.

Another one to add to your list, if you have time or interest.

https://img.discogs.com/cpRpIkIhggba...-7977.jpeg.jpg Snail's House - Snö (2018) Tagged: Downtempo, Bitpop, Chillstep, Wonky Recommended by: Frownland Rarely does an album cover so perfectly encapsulate the sound of an album. Bubbly, floating and colourful production, with a completely dream-like vibe. I could understand why Frown recommended it to me after like 10 seconds. The first two tracks bounce and build nicely to the more synth-heavy third track "[snowdrift]", which sets the tone for the more wonky elements within the album that come later. "[waiting for you, waiting for you]" transitions very nicely into "雪の降る街で、あなたを待っている。", with some glitchy elements added here and there. Some tracks actually remind me of the intro tracks on Lune Rouge by TOKiMONSTA. But if I had to describe this record, I would say it's as though edIT slathered Crying Over Pros for No Reason with honey, marshmallows and other assorted confectionaries. My sweet tooth goes deep, so this went down a treat. https://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.png |
Nice, thought you might dig it.

However, I will say that it's damn good. A few tracks here and there could have been tweaked, but I like the change in direction. A track or two with "Bipp" / "Hard" levels of face-slappery would have pushed it over the top. https://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.png |
Carmen - Time To Move I can't remember who played this for me in plug the first time, but it was an eye-opening moment. I was slap bang in the middle of my bubblegum bass obsession, and to discover a track that had such a similar vibe, which was recorded about thirty years before the genre became popularized was quite awesome. The track itself is a bop. Funky bass, smashing vocals and jamming synths. A top class breakdown towards the end that is totally PC Music in all aspects. In fact, it sounds completely ripped from a SOPHIE track. https://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/pBgbYrY.png |
Soulseek is working out very well for me right now. Not only have I been able to clear my RYM wishlist of those hard-to-find albums, I've begun the long and tedious process of replacing my mp3 files with FLACs. Thanks for turning me on to this. I had no idea.
