I was being serious. Coshes (small clubs) are very simple, cheap, and effective. I think they'd go well in your affordable thread you're thinking of making.

For a cheap version, you could go with a billiard ball in a tube sock. The old standby is a sock full of quarters, but if you have that many quarters, you can afford to buy a cue ball.
