![]() Steve Gunn - Eyes on the Lines (USA, 2016, folk rock) ![]() I used to dig Steve Gunn just a little bit back when I took my listening cues from Pitchfork. That's where I first heard of him. I used to have Time Out, Way Out Weather, Seasonal Hire, and Eyes on the Lines in rotation for about a year, but once I started branching out on my own in my search for "fire" in music, Gunn, along with a slew of others who (when I was honest with myself) failed to impress me, got the axe. At OH's behest, I revisited this album this morning and am confirmed in my decision to cut the likes of Gunn. He's not bad. He doesn't offend. But as I sat and listened to his music, I found I was having trouble paying attention to him over my celery sticks. I thought, "wow this guy is pretty boring", but then I checked myself. No. That's not fair. Celery is awesome, so just because an album can't measure up to celery doesn't mean it sucks. But if I'm more interested in eating celery than listening to the music, then that album isn't for me. |
