Monument Builders
Album by Loscil

https://loscil.bandcamp.com/album/monument-builders

One of my favorites of 2016, Monument Builders is a definitive album of the iconic year.

iconic: executed according to a convention or tradition

That’s what I mean. 1968 and 1987 and 2016 are in my mind the three greatest years . I say years italicized like that because I mean years as if the numeralized solar orbit is a living composer. Otherwise the Ramones and Coltrane wouldn’t be universes unto themselves. 68 and 87 were years of revolution but 16 was the harvest. In 2016, Siddhartha became Buddha. This was a product of the actualization.

Furfour
Album by Grumbling Fur

Glynnaestra, the sophomore effort from this excellent, gentle, optimistic, and grossly underrated band has jumped from playlist to playlist in regular rotation in my listening habits. This one is really just as good. If you like Eno, Julia Holter, or Stephin Merritt (if you don’t know that one do yourself the favor) you should check this out. How it can be that this isn’t more popular is... well... we all know how much beauty there is along with all the incredible disappointment. I need this. We all need to know there’s hope.

I need to check that out again. I feel like they haven't progressed past Furrier tbh. That's an insanely high watermark though.

I compare albums all the time so this may be a touch hypocritical but as a listener I think it’s best to take Furfour as a separate entity. Normally, or at least when I was younger, I would be very unforgiving when a band would choose a more mainstream direction. But in this case I feel the opposite way. A band that’s capable of creating a pop record that’s THIS good has a moral responsibility to put it out there.

Love Means Taking Action

Danish musician Loke Rahbek does a wonderful job of bridging the gap between ambient and avant pop. Big time recommended.

Retrogore
Studio album by Aborted

Solid death metal release. Love the band name. Colors within the lines. From Belgium.

Aborted strike me as a band talented enough create music that isn't 100% bound by their sub-genre but not talented enough to be anything special. Or at least not talented enough to have crossover appeal to non-sub-genre fans.
