Never considered the Stetson/Neufeld album to be jazz tbh.

That and the Bamako Rail Band are probably the two that are most likely to not be considered jazz by some.

I was going to include Fela Kuti, I always considered him an an Nigerian jazz artist but I noticed his music isn’t considered jazz

Stetson’s circular breathing demonstrated on The Sun Roars Into View for example is a free jazz thing imo

I'd be on board with adding Fela Kuti. Afrobeat is heavily influenced by jazz.

I always considered Stetson to be more in the vein of minimal music.

Yeah

The patterns he works with are minimalistic but it’s also an extension of Coltrane and then like Evan Parker

grindy 06-24-2018 01:56 PM

Yeah, but Evan Parker's circular breathing solo stuff (Monoceros and so on) isn't particularly jazzy as well. I mean, it kinda is and it's Evan freaking Parker, but you know what I mean.

Finally got some time, and yes fantastic performance. Exciting work too: I might have to explore some more. Thanks!
