This is a lost neo-eighties synth pop gem. Fans of John Maus and Ariel Pink should take notice. Everyone always says New Order but it’s really Depeche Mode. It’s not often that neo anything plays better than the original but there’s something about the 20 teens retro eighties scene. The DYI origins from the 80’s are so much more deeply realized now. Record it, put it online, there it is. Neo synthwave (not that I remember calling it that) has baptized itself from corporate c ock sucking and enjoys better HIV cocktails. It’s creepier and lower fi. It was reborn as it was meant to be. An unlikely happy story.

The waters of the Southern Ocean are layered: on top and at the bottom, the temperatures are frigid, but the middle layer is warm. The westerlies, the winds that spin the ocean waters around Antarctica, have intensified during the last decade, pushing the cold top layer away from the land. This allows the warmer, deeper waters to rise and spill over the border of the continental shelf, flowing all the way back to the base of many ice shelves. As the ice shelves weaken from underneath, the glaciers behind them speed up.

Summer and fall 2017 saw an unusual string of record-breaking hurricanes pummel the U.S. Gulf Coast, eastern seaboard, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
Hurricane Harvey brought unbelievable floods to Houston. Irma, one of the two strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the northern Atlantic, wreaked havoc on Florida and many Caribbean islands. Maria devastated Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The destruction begs the question: Has climate change influenced these extreme events? Hurricanes can be difficult to decipher, but experts are gaining a sense of what our warming world might mean for monster storms in the U.S. and worldwide.
STORM INTENSITY

Many experts are confident that a warmer world will create stronger storms—and already is doing so. Since 1981 the maximum wind speed of the most powerful hurricanes has risen, according to research (pdf) by Jim Elsner, a climatologist at The Florida State University. That’s because higher ocean heat provides more energy for storms, fueling their intensity. Hurricane Patricia, in 2015, set the record at the time for top wind speed—215 miles per hour—in the north Atlantic. Roomful of Teeth are a vocal ensemble. They’ve won a Pulitzer for music plus a Grammy and they have exactly the kind of sterile polished gloss that you should expect. This album is a soundtrack to a film designed to draw attention to The Colorado River. It’s a compilation of various composers who all seem intent on being at their very worst. The river deserves better.

This is an interesting 4th World dynamic. An excellent collection of ambient compositions and field recordings. Porya Hatami, who has never performed live, is based in the Kurdish city of Sanandaj in Iran.

He sometimes collaborates with a German artist he has never met in real life. His Twitter feed suggests he’s probably, at least economically, left wing. Here’s an elaboration on his views concerning instrumental music and politics from an interview he posted on his own website:

Porya Hatami: It might be harder to spot, but I don’t think wordless music is subtle or that it can’t be political. We know that some of the most politically charged works of the 20th century music are wordless. There are great examples in the work of Schoenberg, Xenakis, Messiaen, Stockhausen, Nono and many more. Stockhausen once said that “I can’t use 4/4 time signature anymore because it reminds me of marching Nazi’s”, so the music form itself can become political or a resistance to an ideology. Also, we have many examples of wordless music that were perceived as an ideological threat.
