Number 2
The Ramones

Their sound never ages. Not once in a lifetime. Once, period. Everlasting youth.

I like the square in the plaid suit trying to look anywhere but at the Ramones.

John Coltrane

Saint John William Coltrane didn’t create art. He created nature.

There’s my top 40. I won’t apologize for the lack of women. It’s merit based. I also think I know enough about African music to justify the absence of African names. Merzbow was the only name from Asia. Outside of Japan and Korea I know very little about Asian music. Ravi Shankar would have been a safe choice but he didn’t make the cut. We will now return to regularly scheduled programming.

No Bach? That's straight up offensive given how much classical is on the list. Dude invented jazz.

That really is very hard to justify. Especially since Bach is widely considered the gold standard in classical music. Other composers that strong arguments could be made for include Mozart, Bartok, Stravinsky, Ives, Shostakovich, Lutoslawski, Vivaldi, and Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Max Richter. But you went straight for the jugular when you mention Bach. It’s pretty much impossible to justify. There’s always the dig a little further back in time arguments. I could say that the incredible influence of Bach is really a product of Perotin. I could also suggest that Beethoven’s sonatas offer something structurally similar but Beethoven also provided anger and edge. But honestly, rubber on road, you’re right, excluding Bach is unjustifiable. Still, there’s nobody that I want to bump to make room.

Don't Bach down, man. It's your list.

That's fine, it's your list. Not to take away from what he's done since he really is great, but personally I would have bumped Skip James since you already have Son House and Robert Johnson on the list.
