"GP 26" - all the way!
(there was a time when I just "knew" album numbers). Still, the multi-disc set of it is great to have and at a reasonable price if you ever want to stretch out with more from that session. This is one of my pride-and-joy Miles sets. Forty-three discs, t-shirt and a replica of Miles' custom-made trumpet mouthpiece all in a full-size replica of his trumpet case (it comes wrapped in a big velvet-like black drawstring bag). |

Whenever I hear people talk about Miles Davis, I'm like 'So What?' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

0099 Batsumi - Batsumi (South Africa, 1974, spiritual jazz / afro-jazz / jazz fusion) What’s that traditional-sounding horn blowing at the beginning? That evocation certainly grabbed my attention, along with the disturbing, wordless vocals. The tribal, mantra-inducing percussion is juxtaposed nicely with saxophone and flute phrasings soaring high above. This gives way to more pleasant call-and-response vocals and more melodious flutes. Overall a festive atmosphere pervades this album. What is it about so much music from the African continent that makes it bright, full of energy and happy (at least to my Western ears)? All that energy coalesces in the fourth track, what I would consider the centerpiece of the album. A fifteen-minute epic, this track unfolds its themes slowly and beautifully, and it’s like I’m listening to the crafting of a song. |

0100 Flotation Toy Warning - Bluffer’s Guide to the Flight Deck (UK, 2004, neo-psychedelia / indie pop) I love this album. It’s dreamy and clear at the same time, happy yet also sad. I just feel like going up and hugging a stranger. Those beautiful, lazy, indie horns… those half-broken carousel synths… |

0101 John Williams / London Symphony Orchestra – Star Wars (USA, 1977, film score / orchestral) This is basically opera music, with all the passion and storytelling of an epic. It’s hard to think of anything to say about this film score because, well, it’s Star Wars. It’s as ingrained into the cultural consciousness as anything. This film score has everything: triumph and terror, delicacy and introspection, anthems and arias. I recommend to anyone who is a fan of orchestral music to listen to this film score and just approach it as music, not as part of the film we all know. |

0102 The Fratellis – Costello Music (UK, 2006, indie rock / garage rock revival) This is fun, energetic album from its first note to its last. It's a bit zany but remains cool throughout. I love the strong accents, the diction, and the quasi-garage rock sound. |

0103 Mirthrandir – For You the Old Women (USA, 1976, progressive rock) This is to many a lost gem by an obscure American prog rock band that made only one album. There a lot of other prog influences on display here, and this band doesn’t really break any new ground, but this is a fine addition to my collection. I actually find the sometimes corny, awkward vocals to be quite interesting. |
