0095 Le OrmeCollage
(Italy, 1971, progressive rock / symphonic prog)

One of the best album covers ever, but that's irrelevant to my 4.5 / 5 rating. This is great Italian prog with a satisfying focus on the organ. Some beautiful, triumphant horns, too, heralding the pageantry of this album.

0096 Jean-Luc PontyEnigmatic Ocean
(France, 1977, jazz fusion / jazz-rock)

This is as groovy as jazz fusion can get, and it’s as playful as the smirk on Monsieur Ponty’s face! It’s strange—jazz never makes me feel like dancing, but this album does. It’s got a lot of spice and swagger.

0097 SolarisMarsbéli krónikák
(Hungary , 1984, progressive rock / symphonic prog)

Who’s that kid laughing at the beginning? One of the telepathic Martians trying to keep the Earthling away? Gloating about its superiority? This album is a synthetic symphonic exploration of The Martian Chronicles. There are many humorous moments in the book, and I think that levity is captured conceptually in the playful synths and flutes. Overall, there is a stronger sense of adventure in the music than actually exists in the novel.

It would be easy to call this outlaw music about drinking, but it’s really more than that. It’s outcast music. It’s about the people on the fringes, not only the drunks but, more importantly, the people who, for whatever reason, refuse to play the game. And what’s the game? Everything societies are built on, like laws that only protect property, not people. This album masterfully destroys all hypocrites who expect everyone to live a certain way to build a society a certain way but do not themselves live in that way. And of course there’s the drinking, stories of which just break your heart.

Unassailable record. Bat, you know this one?

0098 Os Mutantes - A divina comédia ou ando meio desligado
(Brazil, 1970, psychedelic rock / tropicália)

Groovy organs and smooth vocals, turning sassy in spots, with a celebratory atmosphere where whistles go off at random times. That’s how this album opens, and it grabs my attention. Then the music moves into more delicate territory, not sticking to a single sound, having different instruments lead on different songs, even doing some passionate vocal blues before playing with some doo-wop. There are also some unexpected, interesting moments with found sounds and non-music samples.
