0083 Bruno Nicolai - Tutti i colori del buio
(Italy, 1972, film score)

Another one of those 70s Italian film scores that snuck its way into my collection via user RYM lists. I’ve yet to see any of these slasher movies, but I can imagine from the music that they’re probably pretty campy / great. This music teeters between the symphonic and snyths overlaid with minimal guitar. It’s all about mood. The second half of the album gets a bit spookier, with more unsettling sounds and vocals.

0084 Morte Macabre - Symphonic Holocaust
(Sweden, 1998, progressive rock)

This is a highly atmospheric album, so much so that it has an almost post-rock feel to it. Some people find this music disturbing, but I find it rather relaxing, actually. Maybe the original Italian horror movie soundtracks were creepier, but the way they’re covered here, they’re just soothing and beautiful. At least to me. This is another one of those bands that made only a single album, at least in this incarnation of personnel.

0085 Chick Corea - Return to Forever
(USA, 1972, jazz fusion)

I love the mellow flutes and ethereal vocals on the first track, especially because the electric piano fire kicks in after that, and the vocals give way to screeching. The third track is some bossa nova derpness, but that’s all right because I dig the playful end of the album.

0086 Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
(UK, 1970, progressive rock / psychedelic rock)

The choral orchestral work gives this album a strong start, if you’re into Floyd, that is. If you’re not, this is the kind of reason why you’re not. I like it. It’s not a bug; it’s a feature. “If”, however, kinda sounds like a song my friend and I wrote in high school...and that’s not a compliment.

0087 Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie & Sonny Stitt - For Musicians Only
(USA, 1958, bebop)

I don’t have much bebop in my collection. I’m more of a jazz fusion guy, but this stuff, which I’m just scratching the surface of, though not as engaging for me as jazz fusion, is technically impressive and just plain fun. This is good first thing in the morning to set the mood for the day.

0088 Bon IverBon Iver, Bon Iver
(USA, 2011, indie folk / art pop)

Though not as delicate as Emma, this album still has all the feeling of that earlier release. Another great album to relax and have a drink to.

0089 National HealthOf Queues and Cures
(UK, 1978, Canterbury scene)

I had a lot of Canterbury scene in my collection before I ever added this band. Actually, I didn’t even know they existed until they were mentioned offhand along with four or five other bands in a prog rock documentary. These musicians know their instruments and know their scene perfectly, and the lushness of this album is in no way mitigated against by its technical complexity.

0090 Kris KristoffersonKristofferson
(USA, 1970, outlaw country / singer-songwriter / progressive country)

It would be easy to call this outlaw music about drinking, but it’s really more than that. It’s outcast music. It’s about the people on the fringes, not only the drunks but, more importantly, the people who, for whatever reason, refuse to play the game. And what’s the game? Everything societies are built on, like laws that only protect property, not people. This album masterfully destroys all hypocrites who expect everyone to live a certain way to build a society a certain way but do not themselves live in that way. And of course there’s the drinking, stories of which just break your heart.

0091 Slapp HappySlapp Happy or Slapp Happy
(Germany, 1980, art pop / progressive pop)

I’m already the kind of listener inclined to like pop, but when it’s quirky and playful like this, I just fall in love. Everything about this is musically interesting, not a dull moment. And her voice is just so charming, alternating between soft and sassy.

Loved that band ... and Dagmar is the queen of RIO with her fabulous voice.
A while back, after a concert in Köln, I was being interviewed on stage with a Q&A afterward.
One of the guys in the audience, who asked me a question, turned out to be Anthony Moore
from Slapp Happy (and some with Henry Cow). My childhood flashed in my mind.
