I liked it, but I think it will definitely take multiple listens to grow on me. The moments I like, I loved. The sax playing, his vocal freak outs, and tracks like Moulin Rouge, The Healing Festival, Down by the Borderline were awesome, but there were also moments that felt somewhat boring or disappointing, maybe those moments will be an acquired taste.

Frownland 07-15-2016 12:09 PM

I also forgot to mention how much I agree on the ****ing album cover. I found the album when I was looking at an experimental rock list and when I saw it, I expected it to be an album that's only experimental because the band added one or two world instruments to basic rock and made people lose their damn minds in the 70s. Glad I was wrong.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-18-2016 09:36 PM

I'm bumping Frown's second rec down to the bottom of the list because he broke the rules, so onto Cheap Trick it is.

Heaven Tonight by Cheap Trick
Recommended by: The Batlord

So, here is the deal with Cheap Trick. I've heard a fair amount of their hits and singles, but I've never actually listened to one of their full releases. I own In Color on vinyl, but I've just never gotten around to giving it a full listen, so in some ways this album will serve as an intro to the group, although I do recognize a few of the tracks on the LP already.

Surrender - This is one of the tracks I already know, as I first heard it on Guitar Hero... II I think? It's just as catchy and fun as I remember it being, as the band blend together power pop writing with some solid musicianship. If the rest of the album is filled with catchy hooks like this gem of an opener, I should be in for a treat.

On Top of the World - The guitar riff on this cut rules. I'm not usually all too crazy about the use of piano in rock music, but hey, they make it work for what it is, I can't lie. This one is very much like Surrender in the way that the song is really just built around an awesome hook, and that's why I'm liking it so much thus far.

California Man - This one is a cover of a song originally performed by The Move, and it certainly sounds familiar. This one feels a lot more true to the hard rock genre than the first two tracks did, and I'm all for that. Is the line "I rocked my mamma so bad" a sexual innuendo?

At this point in the album I'm contemplating throwing on my leather jacket and buying myself a motorcycle because that's what this music was made for.

High Roller - Right from the get go it's clear they're carrying on with the harder tone, and I'm looking forward to that. The first two songs were solid little power-pop tunes, but California Man was far superior, and I'm hoping for more of that same hard rock kick ass-ery as the album progresses.

Not a bad song, but their are definitely some moments that don't quite feel as strong as others. The short solo at the end was a nice touch and brought it back up for me, though.

Auf Wiedersehen - For all of you who aren't Grindy, wiedersehen means goodbye in german, at least according to Wikipedia. The lyrics on this thing are quite dark, and dabble on the topic of suicide, but if you don't really listen to the lyrics and only focus on the band, you probably would think it's a relatively positive song because of how upbeat the music is. The drummer is really wailing on his set on this one, I bet it'd be a sweet track to see live.

Takin' Me Back - I think I've heard this one before as well, although the intro does have a somewhat generic late 70's/early 80's hard rock sound to it. Damn, never mind, the track took a turn I wasn't expecting out of nowhere thanks to the synths being included, and now there's an organ in here too. I'm being reminded of another band with this one, but I can't for the life of me figure out who. Oh well, I digress, this is another good one and I'm starting to think I'll need to download this album as it sounds like the perfect driving tunes.

On The Radio - I want to write a musical to accompany this album, a stage play about some douche bag who always wears his varsity football jacket and rips around on a motorcycle in a pair of greasy blue jeans. That's what this album makes me feel like, it could soundtrack any of those "coming of age" movies set in the 70s, and it would make them infinitely better (except Dazed and Confused because that movie is already great.) The back and forth vocals between the lead singer and the backing vocalist are pretty cool.

When the radio host came on the track to do his whole spiel, I thought I had accidentally started playing music out of my library, it really caught me off guard. I think it was just because of how less dated the production on his voice sounded, but it was strange nonetheless.

Heaven Tonight - Another seriously dark lyrical cut. The hook of "would you like to go to heaven tonight?" is something I would more so expect on a single from a shock rock artist like Marilyn Manson or something, to be honest. I preferred when the band seemed to be going full tilt, pedal to the floor with hard hitting rock tunes, but this isn't a bad change of pace and it shows they can slow things down fairly well.

I'm looking at the Wikipedia page for the song, and apparently Apu sings it on an episode of The Simpsons. Remember when The Simpsons was actually good?

Stiff Competition - Alright, we're back. I could write about this song, but why do that when the guy who wrote the song, Rick Nielsen could tell you his thoughts instead

"I see it as male and female genitals marching like whole armies and whole corps of these going around and talking with each other. So the male says to the female 'I look hard in your eyes' and all that stuff, it was love at first sight' - I mean maybe these appendages, or lack of appendages, depending on what your gender is, maybe they have these sort of feelings, maybe there is a little brain under yonder! So I try to put myself in that position..."

What the **** is this dude on about? It's an okay track anyway though.

How Are You? - This one sounds very doo-woppy, and I'm finding myself gravitating towards their heavier stuff on this LP, so it's kind of a let down. It's not bad, but it's one of my least favourite moments of this album.

Oh Claire - Please don't be a ballad, please don't be a ballad, please don't be a... live jam? I was making the assumption it would be a ballad based on the name, but I guess that's just some wordplay by the group based on the town of Eau Claire, Wisconsin? Huh. Okay well that was too short to even write about, so never mind that.

My first impression of Cheap Trick: why aren't they Chula's favourite band? This album is full of incredibly catchy and fun tunes that manage to make a genre and era of music that I'm usually not all that fond of (70's/early 80's hard rock) and turn it into a good time.

Part of me is surprised that you were the one to rec this Bat, but I know you have a thing for "fun" music, or anything that is even the slightest bit catchy, so I can understand why you might dig this one a fair bit.

Final Verdict: This is a definite pass, and I'll be coming back to it a few times in the near future, without a doubt.

Zhanteimi 07-18-2016 11:13 PM

I've been wanting to try a Cheap Trick album. Gonna check this one out!

Waiting on grindy's album because I can't seem to find it on Soulseek, so MISB will be next instead.

Thoughtless by Man Is The Bastard
Recommended by: Frownland

I've enjoyed nearly every powerviolence record I've heard, and these guys seem to be pretty well known within the scene, so I have high expectations for this, let's see if it delivers.

Puppy Mill - The album kicks off with some industrial noise, before moving into a hardcore beatdown of epic proportions. There's a ton of hardcore influence on this first track. Not too fussed about this opener to be honest, it felt very stop/start with the instrumentation, and never really hit me all that hard. It's just one track though, so hopefully they turn it around quickly.

Kosher Grimace - More noise to start this one, they seem to dip fairly heavily into the realms of noise music, which is a genre I can't say I'm very familiar with at all. Yet again, this one feels more hardcore than it does PV, which while not necessarily an immediate disappointment, it is somewhat of a letdown considering what I went into this thing expecting.

Unweened Infrant Orphan - Morrrrreeee noissseeee. That's been the most interesting part of the album so far, if I'm being honest. Well, that track was pure noise.

Tyke - Finally, a cut that feels fairly heavy. Even then, it isn't really what I was looking for. I hate to call this boring, but I'm having a hard time focusing on the music, because it just really isn't all that interesting.

The Giant Ebola - The way these songs keep opening with heavy feedback and all this noisy production seriously makes me wish they were doing something more impressive with the music itself, because I love the atmosphere it creates, it has me on edge.

Prepared Hammond / Interplanetary Intrusion / Galactic Insect Swarm / Lunar Landing - This one sounds like someone is sticking their cock in a radar, kind of rad, not going to lie. Actually, it's more like a Pac-Man arcade machines turned up to full speed and then fast forwarded x10. My ears are pulsating at this point, I think that's a good thing? The constant beeping was broken up by a short little interlude, but it's not back, and perhaps even more intense? I'm not sure, I can't remember what it sounded like prior to this. I wouldn't say I love this, mainly because I'm not sure I understand it, but I don't hate it either so that's a plus.

This is starting to get old now, it's running on too long and I'm starting to get a headache from this thing... ew I sound like JGuy right now.

Well ****, I guess there were two tracks in here that I didn't even notice.

Forced Alien Confinement & Short Trek to the Cauldron - Both of these are around 30 seconds long, the first sounding like pure distorted noise, and the second one serving as a really cool noisy, electronic glitch interlude with loud tribal drums in the background. Short Trek might be my favourite song on this thing.

Moloch - Time for the closer, but it's one hell of a long closer. I'd say it's too late for the band to save the album or really blow me away, but I would still like to see a decent powerviolence track before this thing ends.

I've been on their Wikipedia page reading, and apparently they released a split with a convicted murderer on death row? These guys are really about it, I guess.

So far, this track has been pretty lacklustre, with some slow downtuned guitar riffing and the vocalist screaming a political rant and using the word Moloch a million times. The word Moloch is officially my least favourite word ever.

God, this song sucks, and it just won't end. It's like 10 minutes long, featuring the same ****ty guitar riff and boring drum pattern. Just end now, please.

FINALLLLLY that torturous wreck of a song is over and I'm free to go.

I was not a fan of this, at all. As I said multiple times throughout, I found the noise sections to be far more compelling and intriguing than anything the band played. It just felt like super repetitive, slow-paced riffing and rants about political activism that I honestly couldn't care less about. I had heard good things about these guys, maybe they're just not my cup of tea though.

Final Verdict: this one is going to be the first fail, it's not complete **** but it definitely isn't worth revisiting and it hasn't convinced me to check out any of their other material.

Frownland 07-19-2016 11:15 AM

Bummer. The lyrics for Moloch are from the second part of Ginsberg's Howl, you Philistine. Read it.

Anyway here's the next one
Girl Pusher - January 1 EP

It's less than six minutes long so you can do it now if you wanted.

The Batlord 07-19-2016 11:24 AM

First wave PV was generally less intense than later stuff, but it was way more raw and ugly. Despise You are ****ing sick though. You definitely need them in your life. Forget all of Frownland's hipster, MITB dicksucking.

Everything they ever recorded. When they were still around they only released a few splits and an EP, but after they broke up they released this comp with their entire discography.

Oh, and since the songs are in chronological order it only gets more brutal as the album goes on.

Bob's Drive-In by Bob Drake
Recommended by: grindy

No idea who this guy is at all, but when I googled him there were more results regarding a car manufacturer than there were sites about the musician. According to Wikipedia he's a multi-instrumentalist who belongs to the avant-rock/experimental genre, this could and should be interesting.

Keep Light Away From This Product - This isn't what I expected, it's opened with some fast-paced folk rock stuff, a nice and heavy bass-line in the background. As the song continues on it goes through plenty of different passages and I suppose that's where it gets the experimental label, for how many different sounds are crammed in here, but all in all it feels rather grounded so far.

I didn't catch all of the lyrics, and can't seem to find anything on this album online, but it kind of seems like there's a certain silly method to his song-writing that's kind of admirable, we'll see if that keeps on.

Recreational Guide to the Solar System - Have you ever wanted to hear a song that features a man dissecting each planet that forms our very own solar system? This one is for you then. It's exactly what the song name would imply, a guide to the Solar System with some decent progressive rock instrumentation backing it. I enjoy the drugged out psych influence that comes into play in the closing minute or so.

Don't Ask A Cat - In some areas this one reminds me more so of chamber rock, but it certainly still has the same progressive and at times folky inspiration that the earlier tracks introduced. Lyrically, this one is exceptional, as Drake dives into the secret lives of cats, and just how mysterious they are.

I wasn't sure about this album at the start, but it's just so ****ing over the top and ridiculous that I'm loving it so far. It's not laugh out loud funny which would deter from his musical prowess, but instead his weird, quirky songwriting just keeps the album constantly exciting and entertaining.

Pardon My Varmint - If I'm being completely honest, a lot of this guy's guitar work reminds me of Figure 8 era Elliott Smith. Seriously, check this out.

But anyway, this is song isn't stellar, but it's a decent cut that just suffers from following an awesome track about cats. He does take advantage of the extra time on this track(at least compared to the earlier cuts) to fit in a little more progression, and some odd time signatures near the tail end of the song.

Sad and Indifferent Animals Wearing Scarves - I could listen to this guy sing about animals forever, I think. Has he made a zoo themed album? His lyrical style is so amusing, and the way he manages to fit a quick little guitar solo in this thing as well is no small feat.

Lesser-Known Explorers of the Arctic - The longest track on the album, this one clocks in at 4 and a half minutes, which is truly shocking considering how the prog-rock roots this project has. There's a decent guitar interlude to kick it off, and that leads into Drake's story of, well, lesser-known arctic explorers. I wish I could find lyrics online, because I'm missing bits and pieces here and there, I'll have to listen to this one back.

To be completely honest, I keep forgetting I'm listening to an avant-rock album. Sure the lyrics are very out there, but for most of the songs the instrumentation doesn't stray all that far away, and aside from moments like the freak-out half way through this track, it feels more like just a prog album.

Everybody Wants to Meet My Raccoon - This weekend I totally demolished a raccoon when I was driving my friend's van, and so this one is bringing up some serious guilt.

The whole time I'm listening to this raccoon based love song, I'm picturing this in my head.

https://raoulpop.files.wordpress.com...-raccoons1.jpg

I feel like I don't have much to add on this one. I've dug nearly everything this guy has done so far on this project, and he hasn't changed the formula, whatever the **** that really is, so far.

Earthquake Light - See above. A lot of these tracks are so short that I can't think of anything else to add.

Phantom Forerunner - Breaking out the banjo for this one. Does he play all of the instruments on this? He's a damn good multi-instrumentalist if so, as he seems fairly talented with all of these. There seemed to be a couple Mr. Bungle-esque moments on this, definitely one of the weirder cuts.

A Sunny Day in Nairobi - Here's an image of a National Park in Nairobi to help with those of you who aren't familiar with the place
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...obi_-_Park.jpg

Holy ****, this song reminds me of the TV shows from other dimensions they show on Rick & Morty. The fact that it starts of as a story of a man pushing a cart and turns into something about a three eyed yellow monster that it sounded as if he was making it up off the top of his head, yeah, I loved that one.

Swimming Pool - Not to be confused with Kendrick Lamar's Swimming Pool, this song is about an actual swimming pool. This album is going to take multiple listens to really digest, because there are certainly some stand out tracks, but a lot of the others (like this one) get kind of lost on me because of the better moments.

Gone Gone Gone - Drake is rambling all over the place on this one, it's like one incredibly long run-on sentence, again, something that reminds me a lot of Rick & Morty. Solid stuff, or maybe I just like that show too much...

Biting of Glory - Another Elliott Smith-ish guitar on this, as it's strictly just Drake and his guitar so far. Wow, I just noticed, this guy is 58 years old. That's unreal, his vocals make him sound so young, I would honestly guessed he was mid 20's on this recording.

Some Advice About Zombis - Closing track, and it's a fine way to go out I suppose. A dark track about, well, zombies. It's quite morbid lyrically, but that just adds to the overall theme. I would probably like this one more if it wasn't for the stupid zombie craze that the Walking Dead started.

Thank you for that one grindy, that was a truly great listen. If I'm being honest, I went into it expecting something far too experimental for my little virgin ears, but instead, I found a project that I plan to revisit quite frequently (I'm actually starting it over again right now.) The obscure, wildly over-the-top and often non-sensical story telling is unlike anything I've ever really heard from a lyricist, and he manages to tie together a fair bit of progressive rock in these songs, without having them drag on.

Final Verdict: I think it's pretty obvious this one is a pass, and the best album I've heard since I've started taking these recs. Good ****.

grindy 07-21-2016 10:12 AM

Really glad you liked it.
It's an amazingly fun album and deserves so much more attention.
And Bob Drake indeed plays all the instruments and generally does everything here by himself. Such a talented dude.

Qwertyy's Classic Review

Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthrone
Genre: Black Metal
Year of Release: 1994

Since the early days of one of heavy metal's most sinister genres, black metal has become synonymous with very raw, crusty, lo-fi production techniques. While Darkthrone are one of the cornerstone acts of that same primitive sound, it wasn't until Transylvanian Hunger, their fourth full-length album, that the duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto finally managed to reach their ultimate potential.

The wall of sound in black metal music normally is known to envelope the listener with the music, surrounding you in an almost cacophonous fashion, leaving no room for the listener to separate him or herself from the artist. With Darkthrone however, it's different. Transylvanian Hunger doesn't feel like the band are playing around me, pummelling my ear drums until I'm begging for my life. Instead, it feels like a recording from a completely separate time, planet and maybe even dimension. The ancient production quality would undoubtedly be off putting to those who aren't fans of the "trvest kvlt" black metal, but for those who find that primitive aggression to be an incredible source of musical inspiration, the raw natured instrumentation on this album makes the majority of other metal bands feel like Van freaking Halen.

It wasn't long after this album (about 10 years to be exact) that the band started venturing off towards a different sound, and slowly cut their ties with the black metal sound they once pioneered. Regardless of whether that decision was regarded highly or despised matters not, as the band gifted us plenty of cold classic Scandinavian black metal albums before disappearing into the blackest of sunsets and reappearing with a new sound. Whether you choose to worship Transylvanian Hunger, A Blaze in the Northern Sky, or any other Darkthrone release is all up to personal preference, so long as you give the real nordic kings their well deserved dues as head of their class. With that being said, if Transylvanian Hunger doesn't top your list, I highly recommend grabbing a good set of headphones, turning off the light, closing the curtains, and giving the project a closer look, because to quite frankly, it's the pinnacle of raw ugliness and utter chaos.

ANNNNND, WE'RE BACK!

Frown would be the one to recommend me an album without a cover photo on Google images under 1200x1200, so I guess we'll just move on without one.

Jan.1 EP by Girl Pusher
Recommended by: Frownland (1 Pass, 1 Fail)

There's only 3 tracks on this thing and it's well under 6 minutes in length, so this will be a rather short review.

Tourist: Nice synth based beat. The vocals join the mix and are impossible to make out, but seem like some heavily distorted female screamed rap lyrics? I suppose you would call this cyberpunk? I'm not familiar with the genre but I know enough to assume that's what she's going for with this. Decent track, but in some ways it kind of reminds me the synth version of nu-metal.

Most Lonely: This is the longest track on the project, although that's not saying much considering it's only 2 and a half minutes long. The beat slaps, I'm feeling it so far. There's some noisy sampling and she's half singing/half harmonizing in the background. I like this one a lot. The beat feels somewhat trap inspired, but has a lot of depth to it as well. Her voice is kind of cute and sweet, and the way that contradicts the dark and grimy instrumental makes for a cool dynamic.

I Have A Marvellous Persona - This girl thinks she MC Ride now? Definitely a noisy, Death Grips-esque track here, but the instrumental isn't as abstract and abrasive as her voice is. That one was over before it ever really got going, unfortunately.

I feel kind of strange about that one. It was far too short to really develop too much of an opinion on, but there were moments I thought were really neat. It was definitely cool to see a female vocalist in such a noisy, abrasive act, but at the same time two of three songs ended before ever gaining much momentum.

Final Verdict: Despite the length, I can't say that I didn't like a large majority of the project, so it's a definite pass on Girl Pusher. I'm listening to a few live tracks from them now (looks like a duo?) and I think I might look into some of their other stuff, I'm intrigued.

Frownland 08-03-2016 05:46 PM

If you get a chance to see them live, do it. They're a very intense live band, especially when it's in an intimate, smaller venue. This is not really a recommendation, but Tunnel Canary is a pretty crazy female fronted abrasive band (one of the most abrasive imo).

My next rec is completely different and I have zero idea how you'll take it. Huun-Huur-Tu - Ancestor's Call.

Wizard of the Hood by Violet J
Recommended by: The Batlord

So I'm doing this while in plug with Violet and Batlord because I'm not entirely sure I could handle this album by myself. Batty keeps talking up and telling me to go into this thing without worrying about whether it's objectively good or not, whatever that means.

Intro: So it's worth mentioning that this album is a concept project based on the Wizard of Oz. I don't think I could respect ICP if I wanted to, but that almost makes me wish I could.

Sweet Child o' Mine sample? No thanks. It's just a bunch of radio snippets in the background why Violent J speaks to us.

Let It Rain: "Sitting down in my crack house" is the first line in this song. No thanks. His flow isn't the worst thing ever, but the lyrics are embarrassingly poor and his voice is so funny to me. "Gay *** slayer" is possibly even worse than the opening bar.

Yellow Brick Alleyway: You know, I kind of like the beat. It reminds me of N64 for some reason. If I totally ignore the rapping, it's not bad. Oh for **** sakes, now it's speeding up and there's some high pitch voice coming in? Nope, I jinxed it. This is ****. I guess the high pitched voice is supposed to be the Wicked Witch? I just want her to die. If I hear "take your ass down the yellow brick road mother****er" one more time I'm going to cry.

Homies 2 Smoke With: Batlord has already played this song in plug. It's better than the last one, for sure, but it isn't good. It's such an obvious attempt to make a stoner anthem that it would make Wiz Khalifa cringe. The usage of the word "fuck" is pretty funny, but it doesn't cover up the corniness of the song. The hook is among the worst hooks I've ever heard on a rap song.

Thug Whilin': Oh god. This is a hardcore horrorcore beat right here, and it's horrible. It's just this repetitive boring guitar riff being sampled. Wow, did I say the last hook was bad? This one is immensely worse. I'm not even sure if Danny Brown could save this beat, it's hideous. So wait, the tin man tried to mug Violent J but he failed because he didn't have a real gun so now they're teaming up to find the wizard? That might be funny if I didn't hate it so much.

Horribly Horrifying: Now it's time for the lion. How do I know? Oh, you know, just the growling lion in the background. At first I thought the fact that the production reminded me of N64 was cool, but now it's starting to sound like they just ripped beats from 90s video games. I can't remember what game this song reminds me of... I wanna say Mario Party 2? I think it goes without saying this song is bad, so there's that. "I took a **** in the woods and wiped my ass with a purple shroom." That line is real. OH MY GOD, WHO SUGGESTED MAKING THIS SONG 5 ****ING MINUTES LONG? THE WOODS LOOK SCARY, I GET IT J, I GET IT.

What You Thinkin' About: This guy is clearly homophobic, he's just as bad of a person as he is an artist. This beat is really low key and slowed down, which means I have to focus on the lyrics more. I bet they don't even play this **** in hell, because there's no way Satan would be down for this ****.

It's important that you all know how much Violet and Batlord are enjoying this album right now. In fact, Violet has went as far to grab this. I... wow, even for two guys with ****ty taste (mostly Violet, Batty does like a fair bit of good stuff too) they are stooping pretty low.

Shiny Diamonds: OMG HE'S RAPPING OVER AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR. TALKING ABOUT GONORRHEA AND ****ING BITCHES. THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE ****ING DAWSON'S CREEK THEME SONG. I.WANT.TO.KILL.MYSELF.

"I'm singing like Michael Jackson y'all. I'm singing without the little boys and the plastic nose."

"You might get your dick sucked from the back, like what?"

"I'm singing, like Eddie Vader, only better. And making cheddar somehow, and smoking shredder somehow."

The Wizard's Palace: LAST SONG. YAY. This beat is a little bit faster, at least. So they're partying at the wizard's place? The wizard's voice is annoying. Oh, now they're going to light the magic blunt, nice.

"Mr. Lion, you in need of a hoe just blow."

"Your wish was for iron when you made out of steal, but you already the hardest, for real."

FOR **** SAKES, so Batty queued the version with bonus tracks, and isn't skipping. Great.

Final Verdict: Who the **** releases a deluxe version of an EP? I hate this guy. There's nothing to say about this project that I haven't already. I tried to go into it with an open mind, but it's so bad not even Ki would rep this. **** you guys, FAIL.

Apparently I wouldn't recommend it. I guess it's bad...? Or...good?

I would rather listen to Nightwish.

Also, let it be known I don't think your taste is that bad. We listen to a bit of the same stuff, you just also listen to some stuff that sucks so I need to roll with whatever is popular.
