Alright, after a total failure on Varg month due to me misjudging how much time school and my personal life take up, we're back to reviewing the **** you ***gots recommend me. I've been highly anticipating this next album because grindy has been, for the most part, pretty spot on with his recs in this thread.

Eventually in transitions into a nice little rock track, the horns are easily the best part of the song to me. It stands out as the most creative element of their sound without totally overpowering everything else the band is doing. I feel like fans of Radiohead's more upbeat rock material would dig this. Track 2: This one takes a little bit longer to get going, it is a 9 minute song though so they have a lot of time to use. I can't say this is a bad song, I like the way the music builds up and the intensity of the vocalist, but as a whole it fails to make that much of an impression on me. 9 minutes is a little bit of overkill as well. Track 3: Some serious bluesy guitar and jazz vibes all over this one. I can imagine walking into a bar in Russia and hearing this one, as Putin mixes me a drink. This song is hella groovy, and I love how these guys manage to incorporate the sax and horns in such a prominent role. Definitely a few moments where it feels like the guitar member is trying to do his own thing away from the band, but as a whole it works. You know, parts of this remind me a bit of Blackstar. Track 4: Lovely blend of acoustic guitar, cello (?), and much more in this one. I'm not used to listening to lyrics in a foreign language in any genre other than extreme metal, but the atmosphere these guys manage to create makes it easy to treat the vocals as just another instrument. Track 5: Decent track, fits into everything the band has been doing up to this point. Nothing too note worthy to discuss. Track 6: Unfortunately this track isn't doing much for me. Very sparse instrumentation, seems very ballad-esque. Might be more effective if I understood the lyrics, but since I can't I find myself fairly bored. Yeah, this is just dragging along and it's ****ing 7 minutes long, really not liking this one. Track 7: Alright, at least this one has a little substance. It doesn't really grab my attention all that much, and it falls a little bit flat. I would say it's one of the weaker cuts on the album, not as bad as track 6, but not anything remarkable to say the least. Track 8: And we appear to be ending with another slow burner. This one, however, is rather pretty. Love the piano that comes in, this feels like a very delicate song that would work well in a rainy movie scene or something of the sorts. The whimsical tracking goes on for over 10 minutes but never really overstays it's welcome. I would say it's one of the better moments on the album, although that could be just because it's much more enjoyable than that past 3 tracks. Final Verdict: Certainly not a bad album. It didn't blow me away, but for the most part I found it to be a rather interesting listen and can see myself coming back to this eventually. There was definitely a slump near the end of the album, and because each track is so long it can make it fairly draining to dig through those particular tracks. As a whole however, I liked the album and it gets a pass. |
