Yay for Burzum.
Nay for pushing reviewing my rec further and further away.

Please tell me you're going to dig up his Kerrang interview before he was incarcerated, but after all the church burning media craze hit the fan and put Norwegian black metal on the map. That **** is legendary. I can't find the whole thing myself.

A Wild Varg Appears!
Old Funeral - Devoured Carcass

Old Funeral are easily one of the most important acts in the development of the Norwegian black metal scene. Beyond the fact that two members of Immortal (Abbath and Demonaz) played with the band, they also had a then 16 year old Varg Vikernes join in on the recording of this very EP. While the band were, in my opinion of course, quite a bit less adventurous than the music Immortal and Burzum went on to create; this EP is easily the highlight of their discography.

The 11 minute recording hosts only 3 cuts. Haunted, Devoured Carcass, and Incantation each showcase the band's skills (which at best were mediocre.) The highlight of the EP is without a doubt the title track, propelled by guitar work that is rather creative, at least in contrast to the rest of the band. Who provided the sweet guitar licks? None other than Varg V himself, bitches. That's right, even at 16 years old our main dude was upstaging band mates who had already been playing death metal for years.

With that being said, the EP isn't a stand-out from Varg's career. It's tolerable, but it's overall complacency means it isn't much more than an opportunity to hear members of 2 of Norway's biggest black metal acts do something that isn't black metal.

At best, this EP is

In case anyone was not aware that Varg is a ****ing nerd, here's him reciting a passage from The Hobbit.

Holy. ****ing. ****. http://www.hiphop-universe.com/under...nd-blowing.gif

Varg Vikernes is a Tolkien-reading, RPG playing dweeb. He was in Old Funeral. Two members of Old Funeral became 2/3 of Immortal. Immortal's lyrics are about a Tolkien-esque fantasy world of their own creation. Immortal are ****ing nerds as well.

It is entirely possible, perhaps even likely, that at one point in time on this earth sat a table. Around this table sat Varg Vikernes and Abbath and Demonaz of Immortal. And on this table... was Dungeons and Dragons.

This is just hitting you now? I thought that was easy to figure out.

I always knew they were nerds, but it just now hit me just how likely it is that at least some members of the Norwegian black metal scene played D&D together.

Frownland 11-02-2016 01:04 AM

It kinda comes with the territory.

The Batlord 11-02-2016 01:07 AM

I'm nerdy as **** and I've never played D&D. Don't even know anybody who does.

Frownland 11-02-2016 01:17 AM

1. 80s
2. Black metal
3. Nerds
