Star Wars Episode 1: Racer It occurred to me that throughout this entire month, i've only pointed out a few things about Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, but I haven't really talked about it truly in depth, and i'm still not going to. However, I feel like I do need to make an entry about this game specifically. This game, not being the first Star Wars based game I ever played, is still one of the more enjoyable games I had played growing up. I have fond memories of playing this game with my younger brother and seeing how mad he'd get when I beat him. To be fair though, he made up for it by being way better at the harder races than I was. But again, I wasn't really hugely into games at that age, so what's done is done. Probably one of my favorite parts of the game, isn't necessarily about the racing, but it's more about the fact that the game allowed you to sort of "mod" your racer to be better than everyone else. Basically, throughout the races and the game itself, you were able to upgrade a character so that their traction / top speed / etc were getting better. From what I can remember, I think the prices kept going up the further you got into the game, which would make sense. Whether or not that's true I can't really say. I just remember trying to make my favorite character as fast as possible, because I really didn't know what the other stuff was. If I were to play the game now, i'd probably do a lot better. Another neat little thing that I liked was again....not the races: Watto Yes, having Watto in this game is amazing. I remember sitting at the screen where he sat at the 'bar' and would hear him humming the Cantina music, which you can hear at: I don't know if you'd consider that an easter egg, but it's still silly nonetheless. Only reason I didn't really want to talk about the racing aspect of the game, is because it's obviously the main point of the game, and I feel like i'd just be talking about nothing. |

I got first place on every race in that game... except for that last (second to last?) invitational that was on Cloud City or some ****. You had to go along these narrow pathways, with nothing but open air on either side, and I just could never get it down.
And I still got love for that ultra-maneuverable pod with the cockpit (hee hee!) fused to the engines and up front.

Star Wars Battlefield 3...I mean Battlefront.
I figured it'd be an interesting idea to talk about the gameplay footage that was released for the upcoming Battlefront game. I won't lie either, i'm not entirely sure where I feel about it in terms of hype / excitement. On one hand, I have to remember the people that are making it, and with that, I know they're doing their best to make sure the game is made to cater to those that are expecting a great game. On the other hand, I have to remember that no matter what happens, it's still a Star Wars game, and it's going to be fun to play regardless. When I first saw the gameplay footage, the first thing I thought of was Battlefield, and that sucks, because apparently i'm not the only one that thinks that. Unlike most of those people however, I do think it'd be pretty cool to have a Star Wars game that plays like Battlefield, because I actually really like the mechanics and play feel that Battlefield has going for it. Along with that, it really looks like they're trying to make it really feel like a Star Wars game, and not just a Battlefield Star Wars skin. I know I said that it looks like it'll play like Battlefield, but with the addition of being able to switch from 1st person and 3rd person, and seeing what type of ships you can pilot, I can't help notice the influence from the first and second Battlefront games. Plus, it also looks like you'll be able to play as jedi/sith again which I thought was a really cool part about the past Battlefront games. Graphics don't look that amazing, but at the same time, graphics aren't really a big deal when it comes to a release like this. If anything, i'd be more happy with a legitimate Battlefront 3 game that looks and feels like the previous two over a Battlefront 3 with great graphics and horrible gameplay. But, there's no way to judge the game based on the little gameplay we have right now. So, I don't really know where I sit, like I said. I want to be excited because it's a new Battlefront and everybody and their mom is going to be playing. On the other hand, EA just doesn't have a good reputation for their games from what I've seen, and I just hope that their reputation doesn't stick to them with this release. I'm going in expecting something not that great, and I hope i'll be caught by surprise and it'll be one of the greatest releases in the Battlefront series. Like...just going off of the gameplay footage that we have, the game looks like it has potential to be good, and I really want it to be good. I can't even tell you how much fun I had with the previous two games, but I probably don't have to tell you, because you've probably experienced it for yourself. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good game, but I don't think i'll be too disappointed if it sucks. |

Wait, so did EA take over the series with this release? If so, you're right to be suspicious. They can certainly miss the core of what makes the early games in a series great with their lowest common denominator pandering, but at the same time, they have the resources to be able to make something very professional. So long as that outweighs the loss in soul, then you might be alright, and since we're talking about a plotless, online shooter, then that may very well be the case.

I'm prepared to eat my words if it turns out to be a great game, but as far as I'm concerned there's no company that deserves the benefit of the doubt less than EA. |

Everything Good About... I'm pretty sure it's obvious by now that I find the Star Wars Battlefront series to be nothing short of amazing. Granted, I can't really give my opinion on the 3rd game right now, I know from experience that the first 2 games are certainly great. And here's why... Environments Or "level design" whatever you'd prefer to call it. The Battlefront series has never done a bad job at making sure you're submersed into the Star Wars universe while simultaneously allowing you to blow the crap our of enemy robots and other creatures in the star wars universe. For example... I mean, what is more awesome than knowing that at any point in your game, you can potentially be thrown, or fall into a Sarlacc pit? There's nothing better than that I tell you! The general map selection in the two games is also nothing short of amazing. I mean, you get to choose from Tattoine, Kashyyyk, Naboo, Hoth, and so many more, and this is all in the name of battle. Character selection Between the two existing Battlefront games, I think it's good to mention the fact that there is a pretty good selection of characters to choose from depending on what side you're playing for. For instance, you can choose to play as a clone trooper or a B1 battle droid or a Clone Sharpshooter, and so many more. And of course you can get the chance to play as either a jedi or a sith, which is honestly a really cool added bonus. It's a lot of fun trying out different classes to find the right one that fits your play style. Granted, I haven't played the game in a while, so I can't imagine it would be too hard to play as any character, but I have been proven wrong before. GIANT ROBOTS!!! What could possibly be better than having the opportunity to pilot a ship and take down a giant robot walker? Nothing! This is obviously from the gameplay from the upcoming Battlefront, but I wanted to include it because it just looks so awesome. As it's been mentioned before, I really do have a special place for these games. I think they were one of the first games I played that allowed for people to face off against each other in star wars battle. I used to always play the campaign and try to act all cool with my quick scopes etc etc, but obviously games have evolved since then, and i'm sure it's not as easy to do that now, nor will it be as easy to do that in the upcoming title. As I have mentioned as well, I'm really hoping the upcoming title is good, the series deserves a great 3rd installment. |

An AT-AT is no more a robot than is a tank.
