Day 6 10/18/14
Jesu: Silver I had to miss yesterday's post and I wasn't able to be on the site all day due to school and school related things. So hear is today's. Jesu is a project created by guitarist Justin K. Broadrick in the early 2000's after the demise of his experimental metal, industrial project God flesh fell apart. Some of the very early Jesu discography had elements of this Godflesh sound and aesthetic with bone crushing drums and guitars mixed with some beautiful melody and (for the most part) clean singing the albums Heart Ache EP and Jesu LP both have these elements to them. The Silver EP is considered a turning point for the band and considered a classic in post-rock/metal. The album was filled with soring melodies very played in a very slow tempo using drone and shoegaze textures to keep things interesting throughout the short EP. Silver is the first track of Silver EP and in its six-minute length goes through two distinct sections the amazingly heavy yet beautiful verses and chorus and a section that acts as a bridge which builds up to an epic crescendo back to this original melody. The song has haunting lyrics about growing older, although it is up to interpretation. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gBs-cZs9m8U P.S: This is yesterday's song I'll also do today's |

Day 7 10/18/14
Andrew Jackson Jihad: All The Dead Kids/Unicron So this is my second post in this journal because I missed yesterday. Also this post concludes week of songs. Starting tomorrow is week of albums and I already have a bunch picked out. Anyways on with the overview. Andrew Jackson Jihad is a Phoenix, Arizona based folk band formed in 2003 by singer and guitarist Sean Bonette and bassist Ben Gallaty. I'm a huge fan of almost everything they've put out especially they're last two records Knife Man, and Christmas Island. All The Dead Kids/Unicron comes from the AJJ/Ghost Mice split and for me is the highlight of the entire split. Musically it sounds like 3 or 4 of there other songs (same chord progression) so nothing really special there, but lyrically is where it shines funny, biting, sad, offensive, explicit all wrapped up in a two-and-a-half minute song. Definitely worth a listen, or two, or three, or every day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3gt9bE7SRM |

Day 8 10/19/14
Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot It is now album week, I've already got all my picks and I cannot wait to post them all. There should be some pretty interesting ones along with a few generally considered "classic" albums. I'm devoting the first half of the week to said classic albums. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot where do I even begin, it's one of those albums that within the first thirty seconds you know you're in for something different than you're normal pop or rock record, something genuinely unique. From the long winded drones that unfold as the song will progress such as I Am Trying To Break Your Heart or Poor Places, to poppy near Beatle-esque songs like Heavy Metal Drummer, Kamera, or Pot Kettle Black. It was the album that changed Wilco's career trajectory, and inner-band tensions (represented in the amazing documentary about the album I Am Trying To Break Your Heart). All the elements came together on the album it was Tweedy's writing at his best, Jay Bennet's pop sensibility, and the addition of Kotche's unique style of drumming all blended into something that Being There and Summerteeth only hinted at in terms of ambition. An album truly deserving of the praise it has gotten. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq7sNncgIKE |

Day 9 10/20/14
Radiohead: OK Computer Honestly what more is there to say about this album that hasn't already been said about it. (This is going to be a fairly short entry by the way) I think almost everyone on here knows who Radiohead is and what OK Computer as and still is. All I can say is that it will probably be my favorite album forever. It was the first album I bought that went outside of metal/grunge. It truly is the catalyst for everything that I listen to today. So if you haven't ever heard this album all the way through in my opinion you're doing yourself a musical disservice. Some might argue that the album is overhyped. But I had never heard of Radiohead before going into this album. Maybe you want like it maybe you don't like it, but its an album everyone should hear. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w4GsSCfOeAk

Day 10 10/21/14
GY!BE: Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven I have no doubt that this band really doesn't need all that much explanation , but nonetheless I will provide some. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, is a post-rock and instrumental rock band lasting from the mid-90's to the early 00's, and subsequently reformed back in 2010 and have released an album and gone on your since. They're first album the critically acclaimed F# A# ∞ mainly spread by word of mouth has since become a post-rock classic, they're next release was the EP Slow Riot For Zerø Kenada which was also critically acclaimed upon release featured many of the elements what would become the album above Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven using music instead of words to recreate misery and devastation. The music acting as the narrator and the listener forced to cope. This album led into 2000's release of Lift You Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven a masterful work of instrumental beauty and sadness. First off this is a double album made up of four tracks (one for each side) each clocking in at approximately 20 minutes in length so prepare for a long ride. Also don't go into the album expecting immediacy and I cannot stress this enough, the album is very detailed and intricate.the album is also dynamic some moments it might be louder and heavier and moments very soft and quiet (like in side three in the section named Monhiem has this dynamic contrast in an epic 13-minute build up) so don't go in expecting a normal rock or even post-rock album this is not that. However, once prepared its an album that you'll find yourself loving, and always finding new things to discover about it. An album truly worth its praise and hype that it gets. If you don't like it upon first listen (like me) I implore you to try it again, and again, and again if that's what it takes. That's all I really have to say about the album so check it out for yourself if you haven't already. Link below! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PZwQeZh6rP0 |

Not listened to that album for maybe a few years now (and after checking it is pretty much exactly two years). Think I will have to change that pretty soon, awesome album.

Day 11 10/22/14
Tyler, The Creator: BASTARD Alright I'm posting this fairly late so it might not get up until after 12 which sucks, but I've been busy with homework, still am actually, whatever. So Tyler, The Creator is head of the California based rap collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All or OFWGKTA for short. BASTARD was the first "official" so to speak mix tape and its wonderful. Starting with the creepy, depressing, suicidal 6-minute epic Bastard with its simple piano hook and synth lead will make you sad believe me. This is followed by the near nonsence that is Seven which is backed by a jazzy electric keyboard followed by an 8-bit synth lead something you'll find on quite a few Tyler songs. Other highlights on the album include the dark story on the jazzy and psychedelic Blow, the hilarious and somewhat disturbing imagery on French!, the extremely dark and twisted Sarah, the oddly psychedelic Pigs Fly, and Parade, and the laugh out loud track with Jasper and Taco. The production on the album itself is very amateurish yet solid all the way through yes maybe one to many tracks use the same synth to create atmosphere and yes occasionally you will see flaws, but it is meant to sound that way it's to sound flawed because that is what Tyler portrays and what he actually is. He's not hiding behind anything he's equally confrontational and introspective as he is silly and offensive. Its an album that isn't afraid to hide from anything because he never expected anyone to hear it. Link below! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=heGPdwJGo08 |

Day 12 10/23/14
Andrew Jackson Jihad: Knife Man Knife Man is the type of album that doesn't squarely fit into any one genre, its the type of album that is constantly trying new things with the one thread going throughout the album is singer and guitar player Sean Bonnete's lyrics about death, rasicm, poverty, love, hate, or anything else bad and almost make fun of it to a certain degree describing these horrible situations and describing them in hilarious detail. All the songs on the album are fantastic from the 20 second intro to the epic finale. Songs like Gift Of The Magi 2: Return Of The Magi, Distance, Hate Rain On Me, Sorry Bro, and Skate Park show the full out punk rock that was coming to fruition on Can't Maintain tracks like Heartilation and We Didn't Come Here To Rock. While other tracks like American Tune, Fucc The Devil, Zombie By The Cranberries By Andrew Jackson Jihad, and People II 2: Still Peoplin' (a song worth hearing just by the name itself) retain much of the folk-punk and acoustic balladry we saw on some of their earliest releases. What we hadn't seen up to this point were tracks like Backpack, No One, Sad Songs, and Free Bird showing a strong influence in traditional and Country music. And last, but certainly not least is the closer Big Bird a track not dissimilar to White Face, Black Eyes on Can't Maintain closes off the album in a total grand finale. Now I'm going to stop talking and let you listen for yourself. Link below!!! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IX7TRD6XaRs |

Day 13 10/24/14
Tool: Ænama Today's album comes from famed math rock/post - metal band Tool. Starting off in 1990, Tool's first official release was the Opiate EP in 1992, it's sound was based around hard hitting instruments with a hard rock styling. This was followed up by the god, but not quite great album Undertow which contained there hit Sober, the album marked a change in direction leaving the hard rock styling behind for a slower sludgy approach creating long drones while keeping the intensity of Opiate. After Undertow Tool went on a long tour not returning with new material until the release of 1996's Ænema which farther brought out the sludgy and long winded tracks from Undertow. In fact the album as a whole is much more formed and complex than anything on Undertow. In addition to this the longer tracks no longer feel starched out with each song deserving of its length never too long or short (Pu****, Eulogy, Third Eye, and H being the longer ones, and Stinkfist, 46 and 2, and Hooker With A Penis being the shorter). Another surprise on the album are the inclusion of filler tracks, but not the bad kind, the type instead that makes what could be an album that feels way to long digestible and gives you moments of peace to really enjoy the longer ttacks. They are not only a moment of rest, but some provoke thought and are quite interesting Message To Harry Manback, Die Ear Von Satan (which is hilarious) do that for me. To this day it's still one my favorite metal releases of all time check it out when you have the chance. LINK BELOW!?!?!? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yCXrgASzf50 |
