It's good, it's kind of like early Nick Cave meets Tindersticks

1993

10. Pain Teens - Destroy Me, Lover
9. The Electric Hellfire Club - Burn, Baby, Burn!
8. Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton
7. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
6. Melvins - Houdini
5. Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles
4. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
3. Slowdive - Souvlaki
2. The Auteurs - New Wave
1. Catherine Wheel - Chrome

So I think you probably get that I love Catherine Wheel, right? Their second album, and consecutive #1 spots for the band. But this one is my favourite by just a tad. It's less cohesive, but the songs themselves are just divine. Trollhearts favourite album comes in at a close second and Souvlaki is the last of three 5* albums in this list. Other than that, what more can be said about those two stand out Hip Hop classics? ?uestlove once stated that the 9th of November 1993 was essentially the last day of the "Golden Age" of Hip Hop - as it was the day these two albums were released. Whilst it's really just a fanciful way of thinking, it does go a long way to solidifying their status as classic, legendary albums. The rest is great too, you should check them out if you haven't.

1994

10. Jeru the Damaja - The Sun Rises in the East
9. The Auteurs - Now I'm a Cowboy
8. Beck - Mellow Gold
7. Method Man - Tical
6. Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
5. Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers From the Universe
4. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
3. Groundwork - Today We Will Not Be Invisible Nor Silent
2. Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
1. Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Hmmm... A good year I suppose, but I think the last three or four years were quite a bit better from where I stand. That said, I do like all of these albums a lot. There's not really any surprises on here, though my #3 is pretty obscure - and totally hardcore and shit. Oasis take their rightful place near the top of the list, and my favourite Fall cover band takes home the prize.

1995

10. Zoinks! - Bad Move Space Cadet
9. Techno Animal - Re-Entry
8. Black Grape - It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah!
7. Man Is the Bastard - Thoughtless
6. Slowdive - Pygmalion
5. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...
4. The Flying Luttenbachers - Destroy All Music
3. Radiohead - The Bends
2. Aceyalone - All Balls Don't Bounce
1. Genius/GZA - Liquid Swords

What a great year. Some of the finest Hip Hop albums ever recorded (and my persornal favourite Wu Tang related releases), as well as a nice mix of other genres. My favourite Radiohead album by quite some distance and that Black Grape record still holds up to me as the best work Shaun Ryder ever did. Overall, it's a stellar year for me, loaded with albums I regularly listen to.

1996

10. Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
9. DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo - 記憶 (Ki-Oku)
8. Tool - Ænima
7. Unwound - Repetition
6. Ryuichi Sakamoto - 1996
5. Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst
4. Beck - Odelay
3. Ghostface Killah - Ironman
2. Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
1. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.....

What's crazy about this year is the sheer amount of fantastic albums that I rate extremely highly, yet I very rarely listen to any of them. But that isn't a negative reflection on their quality, it's just the way things go. I think the biggest testament to this year is the albums I had to leave off. Some great stuff (ATLiens, Attack in Japan, Relaxing With... etc) that would sit comfortably on this list. And what more can be said about Endtroducing.....? It's a legendary album for a reason. Some nice variety on show here

1997

10. Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics...
9. Roni Size & Reprazent - New Forms
8. ИOИ - God & Beast
7. Idiot Flesh - Fancy
6. Holly Golightly - Painted On
5. Latyrx - The Album
4. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
3. Godspeed You Black Emperor! - F♯A♯∞
2. Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
1. Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus

Sidewinder posted his 1997 list a few hours ago, and we share exactly one album. That album is The Lonesome Crowded West. By far my favourite Modest Mouse release, but it's fair to say that I am not the biggest fan of theirs in general. With that out of the way, I can talk about how utterly fabulous every album on my list is. You got two of my 5* albums leading the pack, both of which have had a huge impact on my listening journey for very different reasons. Funcrusher Plus was one of the first abstract/"underground" Hip Hop records I really got into, and it holds up to this day. Amazing lyricism, cool ass beats and just an all round brilliant listen. While I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One was one of my first steps into the dreamier and, ironically, noisier sides of pop. Both incredible to me. The rest of the list is great too. Check out the ones you haven't heard.

I wish I knew as much about music as you do. Not being sarcastic.

You have probably listened to, and currently go through, more albums than me based on your posting.

1998

10. The Tiger Lillies - Shockheaded Peter: A Junk Opera
9. Squarepusher - Music Is Rotted One Note
8. The Beta Band - The Three E.P.'s
7. Don Caballero - What Burns Never Returns
6. Black Star - Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star
5. OutKast - Aquemini
4. Calexico - The Black Light
3. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
2. Massive Attack - Mezzanine
1. John Zorn - The Circle Maker

Oh goody, plenty of great albums here. Quite a few of them are particularly significant to me as well. Particularly In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, which was one of my first "favourite" albums. I used to listen to it a few times every day back in my Uni days. I grew tired of it after a while but I recently came to appreciate it, and started to consider it one of my favourites again. BUT... those two albums ahead of it are simply better to me. The first five or six tracks on Mezzanine are perfection. Flawless in every way. And that John Zorn album just does something for me. Brilliant stuff. The rest are all good, and it's a great year for me.

1999

10. Handsome Boy Modeling School - So... How's Your Girl?
9. Gabba - Leave Stockholm
8. SPAZZ - Crush Kill Destroy
7. Polaris - Music From The Adventures of Pete & Pete
6. Greenthink - Blindfold
5. Blur - 13
4. Pavers - Local 1500
3. DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze
2. The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
1. Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

As a "90's Kid" it kinda feels a little sad to have to move on from this decade, and it's kind of a shame to end it on arguably the least inspiring list of the decade. Sure, there's a lot of great albums on here, but for whatever reason most of these albums are not regulars in my earspace nowadays. The obvious stand outs for me are the top two. Sublime in their own right, and quite important in my life. Shout out to Gabba (Abba/Ramones cover band weirdness) and SPAZZ (powerviolence/hardcore punk stuff), probably the two most obscure albums on the list.
