10. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden 9. Beat Happening - Jamboree 8. Happy Mondays - Bummed 7. N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton 6. Cardiacs - A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window 5. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation 4. Wire - A Bell Is a Cup Until It Is Struck 3. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back 2. Pixies - Surfer Rosa 1. Luxuria - Unanswerable Lust This is a shit kicker of a year for me. Over half of these are all-time favourites of mine, and in regular rotation. What I like about this period of time, from my experience, if how varied and diverse the music scene was. Hip Hop was starting to truly blossom and develop as an art form, punk was getting twisted and re-invented and then you have Cardiacs just making a genre of their own. Fantastic stuff here.

10. Julee Cruise - Floating Into the Night 9. Melvins - Ozma 8. The Cure - Disintegration 7. The Flatmates - Love and Death (The Flatmates 86-89) 6. Godflesh - Streetcleaner 5. Jesus Jones - Liquidizer 4. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique 3. Pixies - Doolittle 2. Cardiacs - On Land and in the Sea 1. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses This is a year I can get behind. All favourites of mine, and four all time classics in my opinion. But I can't talk about 1989 without blabbering about the first album I ever fell in love with. The most pivotal album in my life. My favourite album ever. The Stone Roses. From start to finish I love every second of it. Yes, even Don't Stop if you can believe that. From the brooding bassline at the start, to the all-out jam at the end. It's perfect to me. In fact, I am putting it on now. Have a great evening everyone.

Very good lists. Every choice is solid to great, although I think there are probably a few jazz albums from the early sixties that could have replaced some Beatles albums from 63 or 64. 4 Beatles albums in two years seem like a lot.
The Stone Roses, and Beefheart are favorites of mine. I'm hoping to see Nick Cave for the next year lol. |

10. The Gerogerigegege - Tokyo Anal Dynamite 9. Poison Idea - Feel the Darkness 8. Ultra Vivid Scene - Joy 1967-1990 7. Fugazi - Repeater 6. Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas 5. Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet 4. Happy Mondays - Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches 3. Wipers - The Best of Wipers and Greg Sage 2. Gang Starr - Step in the Arena 1. Pain Teens - Born in Blood Another fantastic year for me. And quite a lot of variety, ranging from noisecore, Hip Hop, shoegaze all the way to baggy Madchester tuuunes. But my unquestioned favourite album of this year has to be Born in Blood. As I said on my RYM review: "This album sounds like what I imagine it would feel like to be dragged backwards through a grimey neighborhood with a toilet seat round your neck." As for the rest, it's all pretty much great. Definitely one of my favourite years thus far.

10. Massive Attack - Blue Lines 9. The Jesus Lizard - Goat 8. Primal Scream - Screamadelica 7. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless 6. KMD - Mr. Hood 5. Slowdive - Just for a Day 4. Rain Tree Crow - Rain Tree Crow 3. Fugazi - Steady Diet of Nothing 2. Kousokuya - 1st 1. A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory Contrary to unpopular opinion, that is the best Tribe album. And it's also one of my favourite albums ever. I'd be hard pressed to name a better opening track in music history than Excursions. It just slaps you in the most loving way. This is what we are about, and hop on for the ride. The rest of this list is also pretty great. A few relatively obscure albums here (namely #2 and #4) that you should check out if you already haven't. Great year.

10. Philemon Arthur and the Dung - Musikens historia del 1 och 2 9. Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted 8. Alice in Chains - Dirt 7. PJ Harvey - Dry 6. The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde 5. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People 4. Gang Starr - Daily Operation 3. Ultra Vivid Scene - Rev 2. The Church - Priest = Aura 1. Catherine Wheel - Ferment This is a reasonably varied list. Some old school Hip Hop, shoegaze, dream pop and a cheeky bit of "grunge" thrown in there. But the weirdest album comes in at #10. A surreal avant-folk compilation (fuck it, right?) which I assume is a best of. Amazing year for me, with those top two albums being all-time favourites/masterpieces in my opinion.

You, the Night ... and the Music by Gallon Drunk should be on that list instead of Alice In Chains
