Yeah, it wasn't that great. The main reason I called it a throwaway verse.

^ That will be coming at some point, I promise.
From Saturday I will be living in GA and so will be attempting to use this journal to write about my experiences (musical and otherwise) of living in the South as an English teen. Hopefully it won't be as boring as the premise sounds. |

The Front Bottoms – Talon Of The Hawk
A two piece band from New Jersey, the Front Bottoms have been gradually rising in popularity since their formation in late 2007 and first album in 2008. They have a unique style of indie punk that I hadn’t heard before but was surprisingly refreshing. Despite the vocal style being quite harsh, they seem to fit perfectly with the twangy acoustic guitar, deep bass and light drums. It took me a little while to start appreciating the vocals as they are very alternative, but when combined with the rest of the band it totally works. The vocalist, Brian Sella, spews out metaphors and heart wrenching confessions with utter conviction so much so that you don’t really realise that half of the lyrics are overly simplistic and/or meaningless. They know exactly how to make a simple melody sound full and big, and that is where the joy is with this album. It isn’t complicated or conceptual – the lyrics don’t require much effort to interpret and the actual music is pretty straightforward.

'MURICA
I've been living in the US of A for around 4 1/2 months now, and in that short time I've definitely developed some new musical tastes, and expanded some of the ones I already had. I'm basically just going to list some of the new stuff I've been listening to in an entirely self indulgent way. Enjoy. First off, this wonderful two piece group, Capital Cities. I went to see them live at the Tabernacle in Atlanta a couple of months ago (unfortunately I only got to see the first 3 songs due to unforeseen circumstances) and this song (Kangaroo Court) is just excellent. Also, I think this is possibly one of the finest music videos I've ever seen. Being here has also allowed me to hear some more alternative rock/pop from my favourite decade for music, the 90s. A lot of the songs were really popular here in the states but not so much in the UK where I've lived for most of my life (at least, they don't get a lot of radio airplay so they've passed me by) so I was never really exposed to them. Matchbox Twenty seem to be pretty popular here in GA, but I'd never even heard of them til I got here - looking at the chart positions for their albums in the UK, they never really cracked it over there. But I think their take on alternative rock is great, and this song in particular is excellent (on a personal level too, as the lyrics are definitely relatable). |
