Goofle11's Twenty Fourteen Listening Log
After a pretty uninspiring 2013 in terms of music for myself, I decided I should use the new year to reinvigorate my interest in discovering music - old and new - as well as starting a proper journal that isn't the drizzling shits.
I will use this journal, alongside the actual listening log, to chronicle any album that I have listened to which is new to me during the year. Obviously I won't be updating this after every album, but I will try my darndest to keep on top of it. #2014JournalOfTheYear

So here we go.
Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks - Moldy Basement Tapes Vol. 1 (2010) Anybody familiar with this band/Lonesome Wyatt's solo work will have a pretty good idea of what their "Moldy Basement Tapes" would sound like. And it sounds like what you think they would sound like. Above average, but I just eat this shit up. Not for everyone. 3/5 ---------------------------------------- Jay Munly - Jimmy Carter Syndrome (2002) Not close to being my favourite work involving Jay Munly, but far from bad. Would recommend Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots - Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots and Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Always Say Please and Thank You ahead of this. 3/5 ---------------------------------------- Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness Cedric Gervais Remix : Single (2013) This is a quality club banger. But maybe just for when you're in a club (or have a crazy sound system). 3.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Vampire Weekend feat. Danny Brown, Himanshu and Despot - Step : Single (2013) Deanny Brown, Heems, Despot and those Vampire Weekend sukkas. What more can I say? It's totally fucking mint. 4/5 ---------------------------------------- Strawfoot - Chasing Locusts (2007) Standard Gothic Country business. Probably take a few more listens to really get into it but I do like it a lot. 3.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Sons of Perdition - Trinity (2013) Not the best Gothic Country album you are ever likely to listen to, but it's not bad. 2.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Coin Locker Kid - The Lars Demos (2012) Quite quickly becoming one of my favourite Hip Hop artists. Very unique approach instrumentally and lyrically. 3.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Coin Locker Kid - Traumnovelle (2013) Wow. I mean the guy was already impressing me but Jesus Christ. Most cohesive project to date and simply something unlike anything I have heard before (if you disregard his other projects). 4.5/5

Caravan Palace - Panic (2012) I really enjoyed their debut and this is pretty much on the same level. Groovy electronic swing music. I am sure there's probably quite a lot of artists doing the same - and if you know some, send them my way - but they are pretty unique to me, and that's always a good thing. 3.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Acoustic Ladyland - Camouflage (2004) Good album, but nothing genuinely great happens here. Later albums certainly go up another level. 3/5 ---------------------------------------- Rachel Brooke - Down in the Barnyard (2011) Meh. I very rarely get into singer-songwriter stuff - especially when country based - and this is no exception. This just doesn't do very much for me. She has a nice voice and it's not bad by any stretch though, so if you do dig that shit, check her out. But much prefer her album with 'The Lonesome Wyatt'. 2.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010) Some great pop tracks here, but quite a bit of filler. Still, quite a lot to take away from an album that I expected to be garbage. 2.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Bruno Mars - Unorthodox Jukebox (2012) Another so-so effort it seems. Some really good tracks but boring filler for the most part. 2.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Flying Lotus & Declaime - Whole Wide World (2009) [EP] Good collection of beats. The two main tracks are good but far from great. Solid, and a project I would like to see revisited at some point. 3/5 ---------------------------------------- Alpine - Zürich (2010) [EP] Really nice slice of Indie Rock/Pop, and contains the best songs on their 2012album A Is for Alpine. 3.5/5 ---------------------------------------- Vashti Bunyan - Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind - Singles and Demos 1964 to 1967 (2007) [Compilation] Pretty interesting stuff here, but it's just not consistent enough for me to consider it great. 3/5 ---------------------------------------- Alain Bashung - Bleu pétrole (2008) I think it's fair to assume that me being unable to understand French hinders my enjoyment of the album, but despite that this is just pretty boring to me. 2.5/5
