Strapping Young Lad - Strapping Young Lad Very simplistic, but it just looks like someone beat the crap out of a bird, or something with feathers. Not super terrifying, but it gets the job done. http://i57.tinypic.com/dhe491.pnghttp://i57.tinypic.com/dhe491.png |

Yes, I am being a rather negative nancy as the Christmas season inches it's way closer and closer, and for good reason. I don't see why spending a lot of money on people you hardly talk to is worth celebrating. Makes me want to go die in a fire just to get away from it all. That's the theme of this section is "death" within death metal, or heavy metal, or whatever. Now You've Got Something To Die For What could possibly fit this section any better than a song titled such as this. Fantastic track from an also fantastic band, as well as a fantastic album. Satan would be proud. Are You Dead Yet? Most likely a question you will ask those around you that you just don't care about around this time of year. Really, why are you dead yet? Doom Over Dead Man Don't really have a lot to say about this one. It's a fantastic track. |
http://i61.tinypic.com/k96k54.png
Satan has still got some fantastic death metal up his sleeve. Some of it well known, some of it not well known. I guess his minions in Hell have been doing some serious digging. They found a band by the name of Before The Dawn. Guess they must've found it before the dawn, eh? eh? No-one? Bueler? Anyway... http://www.metal-archives.com/images...28911.jpg?0437 Satan: "This album is titled Rise of the Phoenix. It's got a very consistent groove and the vocalist is fantastic. Don't ask me about any of their other albums seeing as I have not listened to them yet. My minions down here decided this album was the one I should listen to first, and hey, they know my taste very well. This is one of the best tracks on the album in my opinion. It's a song that just punches you in the face. What do you think of that, Santa?" Santa: "Where are the reindeer? Where are the jingle bells? I understand that this is death metal, but c'mon Satan, do you really think you're going to win me over? I can agree though that this song does have a nice groove, and the vocalist although scary does seem to know what he's doing. I don't see myself listening to this band too often, unless they incorporate some sort of Christmas cheer into their music. I know you're just itching for a rating, so here you go..." http://i57.tinypic.com/dhe491.pnghttp://i57.tinypic.com/dhe491.pnghttp://i57.tinypic.com/dhe491.png |

I regret to inform any readers that once 2015 rolls around, I will be taking a break from here. It's nothing personal, just need to let my mind relax and come up with some great ideas for the new year. Don't worry, i'll still be taking care of the MusicBanter Awards, but once that's all done, i'll be away from here. Like I said, nothing personal. Anyway, new post soon following the Christmas theme. |
You mean away from your journal, or the site in general? Either way, you'll be missed.

Santa: Hello, boys and girls, I am here once again to request yet another album that has to do with Christmas and the wonders of the holidays. Satan tricked me last time by combining his silly death metal with Christmas. I let it slide this time, but I am really looking for something a little more cheerful and Christmas-y. C'mon, Satan, level with me here, I want something better than what you provided last time. Satan: Well, Santa, today is once again your lucky day, because I do have something for you. I know you've heard Amon Amarth before, I must have shown them to you a while back, well, they have a special little Christmas treat hidden away. It's only one song, but it does come with a pretty sweet album cover. http://i57.tinypic.com/15wxc9k.png I told you I had something for you, Santa. Santa: I don't understand where you find this stuff, but I am still not convinced that death metal is where all the Christmas cheer is. Keep trying, silly little hell breather. |

Have a great rest and of course a wonderful Christmas. As Pet_Sounds says, you will be missed, but we understand. |

As some are already aware, i'm taking a bit of an extended break from here. I have mentioned that it's nothing personal, but i'm finding that my interest isn't up to par in terms of what I want my journal to be like, and my overall presence on the forum. I've handed the torch off to Pet Sounds in regards to the Member Awards, because unfortunately, I was unable to put 100% of my effort into getting the nominations tallied up. He did it very well and it'll still be great. Anyway, i'm posting here now to let people know not to expect journal entries for a while, but I want there to be a post explaining why that is, and this is that. So, i'll see you guys in the new year. |
http://i57.tinypic.com/29pp5rm.jpg
Welcome to 2015 everybody, and specifically those who tend to read this journal on a regular basis. Not a whole lot will change in terms of the format of this journal this year, but I do want to point out a few things that I plan to finish up. Devin Townsend Reviewed: I still plan on finishing this section up. I got a lot of albums out of the way already, and I plan to do the rest very soon. It's one of those things that I really want to see completed mostly for my own personal pleasure, plus...there's nothing wrong with talking about Devin Townsend. Bands That Are In My Last.fm Library That Really Really Suck: I made this section with the thought that i'd talk about more bands that I've listened to, that just straight up suck, but unfortunately it didn't really take off as well as I wanted it to. I'll be bringing it back, and there are plenty of bands that I want to talk about that belong in that section, so be ready for that. Live Shows: I had a section a while back that talked about the live concerts that i've been to. I'd really like to get that going again because i've seen my fair share of shows, and a lot of them are definitely worth talking about. With some old sections coming back to life, I want to also take the time to talk about a few that will be making their debut in the months to come: Albums in 2014 that I wish were released again in 2015: This will be a section where I talk about the albums that I thoroughly enjoyed last year. A lot of great music was released last year, and a lot of albums definitely made a good impression on me. The title just means that I wish those albums were released again so I could have the pleasure of hearing them for the first time all over again. Bands / Albums Other Members Have Told Me To Listen To: Just your typical "this members recommended this to me" section. I wanted to start one up myself, because I think it's a great way for people to see that their recommendations are worthwhile. I've been introduced to a lot of great music from people at this forum, and i'd love to talk about them. As we go onto another hopefully fantastic year for my journal, there will be new sections making their debut along the way that i'm not even sure about yet, but i'll let my creativity take the lead on that one. Last year was a pretty great year for my journal in general, and i'm hoping to make this year even better. So buckle up your seat belts. It's gonna be a fun ride. |

I've been listening to a lot of Approaching Nirvana lately. I'm not saying i'm super into the electronica / dubstep-esque style of music, but I do have a couple of guilty pleasures here and there. These guys are good. They've released quite a few albums so far, but one in particular is one that I will be talking about right now...Lapse In Time. http://i61.tinypic.com/xdfqfd.jpg I don't know what it takes to make a nearly perfect or perfect electronic album, but man have these guys done just that. This albums flows perfectly, each individual song feels like a better version than the one before it, and the amount of repetitive play you can get out of this album without it getting stale is just incredible. It's been a while since I always was in the mood for an electronic - esque album. Truth be told, the last time that happened was when I was hugely into Pendulum, more because I saw them in concert prior to that. Anyway, definitely a group you'd want to listen to if you're into this type of stuff. I'm not even that much into this type of stuff and I enjoy it immensely. Not sure what i'd put for my favorite track as all of them are pretty fantastic in their own right. |
Yay! Welcome back man! Now I have some "Breaking news" for the update thread. Good to see you back. :)
|
It's the return of...
Pretty self explanatory. Let's get into it right away shall we... http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...cobs+Dream.jpg If you were to ask me a few years ago what I think of Jacobs Dream, I would've said they are pretty alright. With 112 plays on my last.fm, that's proof enough. However, as time went on, they started to make their way towards the bottom of my list of bands that I rate highly. Actually, they're a band that I rate pretty poorly when it comes to this genre. I believe this is one of those instances where I was really trying to get into this side of power metal / progressive rock, that even a ****ty band was considered good in my book. Funny thing is, my main issue with this band is the vocalist, and that hasn't really changed from the first time I listened to them. I could never really stand the vocals. I haven't really bothered with them recently, and going back and listening to them again, they don't seem nearly as good as I once thought they were. I will say that they did shine a path on other bands I really like in this genre, like Narnia, and Audiovision. I don't really see Jacobs Dream making a positive impact on me anytime soon, or at all in the future. |
Another brand spankin' new section in my journal. This one is pretty self explanatory. Say there were albums released in 2014 that you absolutely love. Now, say those same albums were actually set to release in 2015. Knowing what you know now, i'm sure if those albums were released in 2015, you'd probably fall in love with them again as they did the year prior. That's pretty much the concept here. tl;dr i'm basically going to talk about albums that I absolutely love that were released in 2014. First off we have... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...eemerSouls.png Judas Priest - Redeemer of Souls Now there's a few things I would like to mention that relate to this album, so i'll get right into it. I wasn't the biggest fan of Judas Priest prior to this album. Honestly, I never really saw myself listening to them that much. I was given the opportunity to see them in concert in 2014, on their Redeemer of Souls tour, and y'know, I couldn't pass up a potentially great concert. Once I knew I was going, I asked people who had seen them live what they thought, and man I got more excited every time someone told me how they really know how put on a show. Do I share that same opinion? Hell yes I do. Seeing Judas Priest really shined a new light on my fan-ship of them. Since it was the Redeemer of Souls tour, I figured i'd give the album of the same name a listen, and man, I was blown away on first listen. Before the concert, I went through their discography to sort of get a feel for what i'd be expecting at the concert, and once I listened to Redeemer of Souls, I realized that Judas Priest has had an incredibly strong and successful discography throughout. I hadn't really noticed it before, but they've stuck to their marbles since day 1, and seeing them live made them even more true. I think the exact same thing about Iron Maiden in the sense that each album you listen to is something special. In my experience, I haven't listened to a Judas Priest album that I haven't liked. Furthermore I don't really see myself going "man, this song is meh" or "they could've done better". I see myself really enjoying the music. Same is said for this album specifically. A lot of great tracks as well, but this one is by far one of the best i've heard: It's that heavy rock sound mixed with the beautiful vocals of Rob Halford that really make this song and this album one of the best you'll hear from 2014. I strongly suggest giving it a listen. |
http://i61.tinypic.com/2w49thl.jpg
You know those bands that just fit the mood so perfectly? The one you listen to in the morning and really just make your day start off on the right foot? That's what we'll be talking about here. I've enjoyed many many mornings simply due to the music i'm listening to. I honestly think my mornings wouldn't be as easy to deal with if it weren't for music. Here's one I was listening to this morning, and man it really made the commute to work so much easier. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...bered_Days.jpg Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days Honestly, I don't really think you can go wrong with a bit of Iron & Wine during your morning rituals. He's an american singer/songwriter mostly known for being very calming and using the acoustic guitar for the greater good. I chose this album at random mostly due to my inability to choose an album that I know I liked. Although, with Iron & Wine, i've pretty much enjoyed every release he's put out since he started. This one in particular has a few of my favorite songs, however there's many of his other albums that also hold a lot of my favorite songs. These are a few of them: This particular song really fits the mood of wanting to keep moving, and getting from point A to point B. It allows for a very relaxing morning commute and is easily one of the best on the album. This one in particular has some of my favorite guitar work that i've ever heard from an acoustic guitarist. Everything fits so well and really has a special place on this album. This album as a whole really flows so well and should certainly take a place in anyone's morning playlist. It's definitely one of my regular listens. |
You ever just listen to a song and realize how beautiful the lyrics are? That happened today:
I've listened to Scenes From A Memory multiple multiple times, but for some reason never really paid much attention to it lyrically, don't really know why, was probably more focused on the wonderfulness that is the instrumentals throughout the album. Then I listened to the lyrics of this song, and good lord this song is powerful. Every set of lyrics is just beautiful, and really tells the story of losing someone and you can feel the pain in Labrie's voice. I think when I realized how powerful this song truly is was when I heard the lyrics: Quote:

Earlier last week I was listening to an album that straight up just put me in a really good and relaxed mood as the day started. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...lbum_Cover.jpg The Black Keys - El Camino Man, this album is so good. Honestly, it's nearly perfect as far as I'm concerned. I remember hearing it for the first time a few months back and thought the same thing. It just flows like an album in this genre should. It sounds like one of the old western albums you'd expect to hear if you were walking through an old western civilization. The reason I really like it is the vocals. I don't have a large collection of acoustic / smooth rock albums that I like that include liking the vocals, but this album is that rare breed where everything fits together perfectly and allows for a very nice listen. Just a quick note, this song reminds me of The Raconteurs for some reason. |
http://i61.tinypic.com/2w49thl.jpg
I saw a song in Wpnfire's journal, and it made me think of the album it comes from and I thought it'd fit perfectly for reasons I will explain. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._And_Death.jpg "What? A Heavy Metal album is good for your morning routine?" Well, yes. But that's not why i'm posting this album in this section. A Matter of Life and Death is definitely not one of the heaviest Iron Maiden albums you'll come across, but man are all the songs relaxing to listen to. They are pretty mellow throughout and pretty technical, but give them time and they do build up. That's true for pretty much every song on the album. It's great for the morning more because it gives you something nice and mellow to listen to but still allowing yourself to wake up to some awesome heavy metal. I could go on and on about how great this album really is, but I want to keep it short because the music does all the talking by itself. Truly a fantastic album though, severely underrated in my opinion. Fantastic track and my favorite on the album. The bass intro is absolutely killer. |
http://i61.tinypic.com/r2p2so.png
So, i'm participating in the Best Year for Music Tournament thing and it dawned on me that I went into it thinking I have a few albums I can throw in and have some fun, unfortunately I realized that I needed more albums in my arsenal. Luckily, the idea was brought up that it'd be the perfect opportunity to listen to some music that I may not have listened to when it was released in 2012. So, I figured why not making a place in my journal for things that I want to say about the albums that I'll be listening to. I figured it's a pretty good idea, hitting two birds with one stone some would say. Anyway, stay tuned. |
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Artwork%29.jpg Pink Floyd - The Endless River Released back in November 2014, this album received mixed reviews mostly due to it being a bunch of unreleased tracks. But man, if I had the chance to go back and listen to this album again for the first time and feel how I felt when I heard it the first time, I certainly would. I'm one of the rare people at this forum I think that finds this album listenable and enjoyable the more time I listen to it. It's great. It's nothing over the top or fantastic or even ground breaking, but it's definitely not the worst thing they've done *cough* The Wall *cough*. There are a lot of tracks to listen to, and a lot of great ones at that. One of which... ...is my favorite track on the entire album. It's got that traditional Pink Floyd sound and feel and just goes fantastically with the two songs that follow it. I'll say it: I don't understand the hate for this album, or the negative reviews that surround it. I mean, I understand the disappointment that people felt when they heard it's not going to be an actual studio album, but come on, and I said this in another journal of mine I think, you got an album that Pink Floyd put some work into, and they did it well. I've even heard people say that it's worth only one listen to get the full feel for it, and that I also disagree with. There are a lot of things that you don't hear the first time, and it can take a few listens to get the full feel for the album. Maybe that's just me. Perhaps i'm over analyzing. I could be. Anyway, if this album were set to release again this year, i'd have no problem paying money for it again to hear it for the first time again. I'd enjoy it. |
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._art_final.jpg
Linkin Park - The Hunting Party So, i'm a fan of Linkin Park, sue me. I've been a fan of their ever since I heard Hybrid Theory for the first time, and fell in love with it right away. Meteora did the same thing, was in love the first time I heard it. Then of course they changed their sound to a much more electronic thing, and I kind of lost interest. Then we got an album that was described as being a "throwback to the old style", that was The Hunting Party, or that was the goal at least. I didn't see it, however. I found this album to be mediocre at best, and that's again coming from someone who was always hoping they'd bring themselves back to the rock n roll that they did so well at in the past. It just felt like they were focusing so much on trying to go back to their old sound, that they lost the touch that they had when they were still doing their old sound. The rapping felt forced, the guitar chords weren't stellar in any way, and the vocals were mediocre. With as many bad things I can say about it, there are certainly a few good things I could say. For one, the artwork is neat, it sort of had a "i'm shooting down the electronic us down" feel to it. Maybe i'm just saying that for the hell of it. As for the songs are concerned, none of them really struck me to be something i'd listen to on a regular basis, and that's a shame, because I had high hopes that i'd finally get a "classic" Linkin Park album. One song in particular really just rubs me the wrong way... Guilty All The Same was released as a single, and man, they could have chosen something better to give people a preview for what to expect on the album. What i'm trying to say is...Guilty All The Same brought peoples expectations up, and when the album was finally released, Guilty All The Same was the only track on the album that even felt like it was something you'd find on Hybrid Theory or Meteora. So I am saying it's a good track, but the way they previewed the album was done terribly. It really is a shame that for me that this album didn't meet my expectations. Even after a few more listens it just doesn't do it for me. Maybe after a couple years it'll become a Hybrid Theory / Meteora, but as far as it goes right now, it's just another CD that you'd expect to find in a bargain bin. |

I don't know how long it's been since i've posted video game soundtracks, but I think it's long overdue, especially with all the amazing games i've been hooked on recently and for most of 2014. http://i59.tinypic.com/90ou8m.jpg I recently gave Wind Waker another play with the recent release of the HD version for the Wii U and man have I forgot how much I love the music in that game. Zelda games have always had music that I absolutely love, but this one really does it well with how calming the actual Wind Waker is. For example: Spoiler for songs:
This game really does well with the use of wind instruments, and Nintendo hit it out of the ballpark with how amazing every song is. Next we have easily one of my favorite soundtracks of the entire year last year: http://f1.bcbits.com/img/a1867057507_2.jpg I have discussed this soundtrack before, but there's nothing wrong with talking about it some more, especially when I love it so much. The soundtrack is for probably my game of the year last year, and that's tough to do since there were a **** ton of games released last year that I absolutely loved, but Rebirth really did a great job at making the year perfect. This song is up there with being one of the best songs i've ever heard in a video game. The makers of this soundtrack should feel beyond proud to have made such a fantastic soundtrack for a fantastic game. http://f1.bcbits.com/img/a2452449445_2.jpg I play a lot of Rogue Legacy last year, and still play it even this year. Man, the soundtrack is amazing. Every track fits the environments that you run into so perfectly that it makes for a very fun and rewarding experience. Just running through the castle and hearing this song in the background makes it so easy to lose a few hours of your day... Very well done and will probably be an OST that I pick up for my own collection. I've got many more to come, but for now, that'll have to do. |
 Why, Ki, why?! :(
But seriously, I agree completely with what you said about The Endless River. Nice write-up. |
^Happy to see you share the same thoughts, man. And I assume your "why"s are for my avatar. I needed a change and I think the one I have better fits my interests.

Alesana - The Decade EP "Oh god, another hipster emo kid that loves Alesana. Typical." Ok, you shut up voice I just made up for the sake of commentary. I've been a fan of Alesana since The Emptiness, and let me tell you, your constant negativity toward that is getting real old. Anyway, all joking aside, I am a huge fan of Alesana. I remember the first time I heard The Emptiness and that just became a regular listen instantly. It was my first real introduction to that genre of music, which I am certain is considered post-hardcore, but I could be wrong, and man, I'm happy I gave it a chance because it opened up a world of possibilities for albums and bands that I still love to this day. Alesana released The Decade EP in April 2014. It was an album that would forever be remembered as the bands 10th year anniversary together which in itself is amazing, and they really didn't lack the talent on this album, especially since this album came after the amazing A Place Where The Sun Is Silent, which to this day, is still my favorite post-hardcore album. The style and concept of that album is amazing to me and it's done so well that it leaves me wanting more every time I hear it. The Decade EP does the same thing. It's done so well in the small list of tracks that it has but it still feels like a full album that I would listen to on a regular basis. If this album is what we should expect to hear from the album set to come out in 2015, I am on board that train right now. Sign me up, because judging by this EP alone, the new album is going to sound amazing. Every track is fantastic on this album, but I do have some favorites... Probably the best track on the album in my opinion. It's so catchy and really captures what Alesana is all about in just this one song. There's a lot of examples of that throughout the EP, but this song does it perfectly. It's fantastic to hear this album and still hear that sound that I came to really love when I first heard The Emptiness. They've been staying consistent with their sound for as long as i've listened to them, and the dedication they have to that really does show in the chemistry they have as a band. Being able to celebrate 10 years as a band proves that. Hoping for another great 10 years for this band, and maybe we'll get another great EP when they hit 20 years together. Check this album out if you haven't, and if you're a fan of this music, definitely won't be disappointed. |

Time for some more video game soundtracks! I'm starting to believe that this is one of my favorite parts of this journal. I have a lot of favorites, but this one is a lot of fun. Anyway... http://i61.tinypic.com/1zxw9hu.jpg I think it's a crime that I have supposedly not even mentioned one of the best N64 games ever, Ocarina of Time. Especially since the soundtrack was blow your mind amazing. To not only make an amazing game but to make an even more amazing soundtrack that just goes so perfectly with everything about the game, it's just the work of true game creating talent. ^And that is by far the catchiest and most fantastically made song i've ever heard in a video game. It just screams adventure. http://i59.tinypic.com/x2ut5d.png It's going to sound cliche, but yeah, Pokemon OST's seem to just get better over time, as do the games. This game in particular was groundbreaking for a few reasons, but that's not what i'm focusing on. This soundtrack is perfect. From trainer battles to the Elite Four, the soundtrack just keeps you going and keeps you pumped. Then once you've made it to the Champion, one of the best tracks hits you right in the face... ^Truly a remarkable piece for Champion music. Yes, even more to come. Just can't think of them right now. |
http://i61.tinypic.com/r2p2so.png
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Testament.jpg Testament - Dark Roots of Earth Testament released Dark Roots of Earth back in 2012, and I somehow missed it when it was released. That's most likely due to me not listening to Testament as much as I probably should. Or maybe I tried to listen to them and I wasn't in the right mood or something. I don't know. Either way, this album is fantastic. It starts off with a really nice heavy and groovy track that paves the way for the rest of the album: ^That track does give you a pretty accurate idea of what to expect out of the album as a whole, and this track alone is amazing. Testament, like I said, are one of the thrash metal bands that I haven't paid much attention to. I think for me, they have the same "curse" as bands like Anthrax have. Great music, but sort of thrown to the side because of other bigger bands. Thing is, I would probably listen to Testament every day over bands like Megadeth and Metallica, especially with the album they've been releasing lately. I don't know a whole lot about Testament's earlier albums, but i'll give them a listen in time. I will say that if you're looking for a good reason to listen to this band, this album will give you a really good feel for what to expect from 2012 on. Maybe their earlier albums are just as good, maybe they're not. I can't make the claim because I just don't know from experience. Either way, i'm happy I went back and listened to this album, it'll make it's way into my personal catalog, along with their other albums. |
Good pick, this was easily Testament's best album since 1999's The Gathering.
I also think they kind of got screwed over by getting snubbed by the Big 4, but I also think that's partly due to their best material coming out in the '90's and '00's rather than the '80's during thrash metal's golden age. |

Experience Music Project A museum of art and music in the city of Seattle http://i57.tinypic.com/mjmm4j.jpg So, we have a piece of art in the city of Seattle, known as the Experience Music Project, or EMP for short. It's got exhibits, practice studios, and one of the biggest TV screens known to man. Well, as far as I know anyway. I've gone many times before, but yesterday was definitely a day to remember. We saw the Star Wars exhibit which there are pictures posted in the Member Picture Gallery, but on top of that, we saw the tower of guitars that is located in one of the hallways... https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...a110130227c58a It's not just a tower of guitars though. If you take a closer look when you're looking at it, you'll see guitars from some of the most famous guitar players known to man. Some are hard to see since the tower is two stories tall, but you can find some that'll tickle your fancy. Alongside that, we saw two exhibits that i've never seen before, but were fantastic in their own right... https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...4d442178b50945 The Jimi Hendrix Exhibit The Jimi Hendrix Exhibit had everything from outfits that Hendrix himself wore, to the guitars that he played, all the way to the postcard that he sent to his father, which had the address of Seattle, WA on it. Many articles and letters were also seen along the walls as well as concert photos, and posters. Everything you'd want to see about Hendrix was located here. Along with that... http://i57.tinypic.com/2i06ejl.jpg Nirvana Exhibit The Nirvana exhibit was also available for us to walk through and enjoy. This was full of wardrobes, concert posters, and even pictures that Cobain himself was in while him and his band were on tour. They had vinyl records in frames, letters, backpacks, and things that would even degrade over time due to their age. Broken guitars were also seen in cases. Can't tell you how many of those I walked by. If you're ever in my neck of the woods, let me know. I would absolutely love to show anyone who's interested this museum. It's one of the best things Seattle has to offer, and to be able to live where this is located really makes me even more happy to live here. |
The return of...
I was sad to see that I kind of let the dust build up on one of my favorite types of entries in my journal. "Worth The Hype?" is a section that I did a while back where I will take bands that are so hyped up. And I mean hyped up in the sense that they get talked about a lot upon different types of music forums and platforms, and I basically reach a verdict for said band as to whether or not they are worth the hype. Keep in mind that anything I say about a band is strictly my own opinion, and that my word doesn't necessarily mean that it's right. I mean...I said Nirvana isn't worth the hype. Can you believe that? Sure you can. Anyway, it'll be the same layout as before, i'll be using one of two of these nifty little images seen below... http://i41.tinypic.com/x1ghgm.png And I will pretty much be either talking highly of a band, or I will be talking complete **** about them. It's always a lot of fun as I just enjoy talking about popular bands and ****ting all over them. Just kidding, maybe. Anyway, stay tuned for a post following this one. |
You're saying to yourself right now..."man, you're really going to start with Pink Floyd to bring back Worth The Hype?" Well yes, I am. Why bother pussyfooting around when I could just get right into it with one of the most successful bands out there. Plus, I feel like talking about Pink Floyd, sue me. Anyway, yes, we have Pink Floyd up on stage and we are going to dive in and see if we can reach a verdict as to whether or not they are worth all the hubbub they get across numerous platforms. Most people know Pink Floyd when they hear the name Roger Waters, and even more people know Pink Floyd when you mention albums like Wish You Were Here, and The Dark Side of the Moon. And sometimes people recognize the name when you go all the way back to the Piper at the Gates of Dawn era, which is pretty cool too. I'm of the opinion that the Roger Waters era of Pink Floyd is the far superior of the two different sides of Floyd that people talk about. I'm of course speaking of the whole Waters vs Barrett argument. And I know there are a lot of people out there who will say that if Syd Barrett stuck through the hard times and stayed with Pink Floyd, they'd be far better off. Well, all I can say is that you're wrong. But I digress, let's really get into this shall we. Let's talk about their discography, and i'm speaking specifically their studio albums. We've got albums like Animals, The Division Bell, Wish You Were Here, The Dark Side of the Moon, and Meddle, to name a few. All very very fantastic albums. But on the other side, we've got albums like A Saucerful of Secrets, and Ummagumma, which...aren't all that great, in my opinion anyway. I just couldn't get into them as much as I could the later albums, but that could easily be the cause of me getting into Pink Floyd with their later albums, so I has already associated the later album sound with Pink Floyd, which meant any different sound just seemed...wrong. Not to say they're terrible albums, but...yeah they're pretty bad. The hype that surrounds Pink Floyd however does come from the later albums as well, which are the ones I mentioned above. One that is hugely the main focus of all the hype does go to The Dark Side of the Moon. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...f_the_Moon.png That leads to an important question though. Does one album justify the amount of the hype that the band got as a whole? Is the hype that surrounds the band as a whole worth it in the long run? The verdict comes to... http://i39.tinypic.com/lfyfd.png Yes, I do believe that the hype that surrounds one album as much as it does definitely justifies the hype that the band gets as a whole. The thing is, if I personally never heard of The Dark Side of The Moon through means of radio or music forums, I never would have really bothered looking into their other albums. I mean, sure, I would have eventually found out about them and gave them a listen, but being exposed to such an album that Dark Side is, really put a huge impact on how I felt Pink Floyd should sound, which could explain why I like the sound of the later albums. Am I wrong? Maybe, but hey, they win in my book, no matter what people say about *cough* Endless River *cough*. |

So, I don't know if i'm the only person that has gone to this site, I really hope i'm not: Everybody! Everybody!. Anyway, i'm not posting that to promote the site. God knows it really doesn't need it. What I am doing however is pointing out some of the best gems that this site had to offer, musically. Yes, this site with it's skits were full of some super catchy songs that have probably stuck with most kids as they grew up. Honestly, anyone who was 13 years old 10 years ago should've heard of this site. Here are some of those wonderful gems i'm talking about... The infamous Trogdor skip to 2:31 Then we have ... The whole thing is just gold. The best introduction to learning guitar that you could get. And lastly we have the wonderful introduction to the entire site: Yeah, this is something different from what you'd usually see in this journal, but it was in my head, and hey, it does relate to music. I have weird thoughts sometimes and this being a music journal, I feel it's fair to post it here, even if it doesn't fit within it's own section. Don't judge me. |

pg.lost - In Never Out Alright, so i'm guilty of talking about this band way way too much, but I have my reasons, I really do. This band is not only one of the more underrated post-rock groups out there, they are also deserving of more attention for how consistent they are with how their albums sound. In Never Out is a great example of that. In Never Out was released on November 12th 2009. Before that, we had It's Not Me, It's You! and Yes I Am, but In Never Out is special in it's own right, as is those other albums in the sense that it brings an even more powerful feel of music than the albums that came before it. It's funny, because I actually started listening to pg.lost when I heard It's Not Me, It's You!, and once I heard they released the wonderful album titled "Key", I sort of skipped over In Never Out without even realizing, and man what a mistake that was. Every here knows that I will do whatever I can, and do it whenever I can to talk about Key as being one of the best albums I ever heard. That is still my opinion of this day, but it's wonderful to be able to say that In Never Out comes very close to bringing Key down to 2nd in terms of my all time favorite albums. This album has everything you'd expect to hear from a pg.lost album, but they do it in a way where your expectations are blown out of the water and you're left with something truly amazing. Key did the same exact thing but did it just a tad bit better. It's safe to say that these two albums are almost head to head in being my favorite album, so I guess I can choose both as my favorite, in some way. Seriously though, this album does have it's own way of really making you believe that this band really wants to make their music known, and they do it so well that it feels like the band members were meant to find each other in order for them to make albums like this. And yes, I do have some favorite tracks, but I want to choose one because when I heard it for the first time, it just blew me away, and continues to do that in traditional pg.lost fashion... Honestly, you owe it to yourself to give this album a listen, if not just to get me to stop rambling on about how amazing pg.lost are, but i'm never going to stop doing that, so you may as well give into the peer pressure and listen along with me. I don't do this with many bands, if any others at all, but I really want people to see what I see when I listen to this band. The band members work so perfectly with one another and they create such beautiful music that must be heard by everyone. Upon discovering how great this album truly is, it's safe for me to say that I have not heard a pg.lost album that is anything but truly amazing. |

Now what kind of person would I be if I didn't treat every holiday as a day to express my love for anything that is metal. C'mon, it just fits so perfectly. Anyway, yeah, for Valentines day here at my journal, i'm going to be posting some of my favorite heavy metal / death metal songs that have something to do with love or hearts in some way, call me crazy but there are a lot of them out there. We'll start off with something easy... Cannibal Corpse - Stripped, Raped and Strangled You really think I wasn't going to include a Cannibal Corpse song in any of this. I only went with this one because just looking at the song title, it's easy to see that there is a lot of love going around with this band. I mean, who wouldn't want to be stripped, raped and strangled on Valentines Day? You don't? Well you're crazy. Next one we have... Judas Priest - Prisoner of Your Eyes Yeah, I was able to fit a bit of Judas Priest into this one, sue me. There's no other love song you could go with when you really want to send the message that you really care for someone. I mean, with lyrics like "And i would do just anything, to stay and be with you", and "you came along and captured me, now im a prisoner of your eyes". Yeah, you're probably thinking "where's all the heavy Judas Priest stuff?", well imaginary friend, Priest were also very good at writing songs with some meaning to them, and I mean they did them well, especially with Halford on the vocals. Last one for today, I think we'll go with... Cradle of Filth - Temptation Oh c'mon, you think I was going to try to slip a Cradle of Filth track into this one, of course I was. This comes off one of the only Cradle of Filth albums I could really get into it titled "Thornography" and for good reason, since I didn't really find myself being able to enjoy any of their albums. I always found this track to be one of the catchier tracks on the album, but there were plenty of others, I just enjoyed this one the most for some reason, and hey, it fits here. Happy Valentines Day everyone. |

This is a section that I hinted at when I came back from my break, and I decided to make it's debut today. It's basically a place where i'll be seeing if I enjoy or not enjoy albums that members of this forum are talking about, or raving about in the forums. There's a few on my list that I want to get out of the way right away, but that'll come with time. There was an album that I saw a few members raving about, and I decided to give it a listen myself. It was being discussed in the Albums Your Digging thread, and seeing the album artwork and the name associated with it, I was intrigued off the bat: http://cdn4.pitchfork.com/albums/215...e.3deab547.jpg Jeff Bridges - Sleeping Tapes There's one word to describe this, bizarre. It's bizarre in a good way. Honestly, I went into this not really knowing what to expect, and when I found a website that provided it, I read at the top "sit back, close your eyes, and nod off." If I were ever to nod off to an album like this, I can't imagine the images my mind would make whilst this is going on. It'd be something that resembles the images that someone who is baked off their mind would imagine. But like I said, this is bizarre in a good way, and i'm really diggin' the sound this album has with it. It's nothing really traditional, so don't go in expecting something super amazing, but for something that is supposed to go with the concept of trying to help people sleep, well, i've heard some of those types of cd's, and this one is definitely up there with being one of the better ones i've heard. Well deserving of the praise it's getting at this forum, because i'm definitely enjoying it. |
