There's a band I really don't really talk about that much, but I always find myself going back to them whenever I feel the mood is right. I'm speaking of The Pineapple Thief. I'll just be honest, they do seem to be influenced heavily by The Smashing Pumpkins, but something about Billy Corgan that doesn't really sit well with me, vocally. The Pineapple Thief are different in that sense where it has the sounds that I like with a not too bad vocalist to mix it all together into one very good sounding group.

I remember the first album I ever heard from them, which simultaneously blew me away, and I instantly became a fan.

Little Man

I don't really think I can say which song is my favorite when I find something special in each track. But if I were to choose perhaps two songs that would be a pretty good place to start in terms of understanding what the band has to offer, I'd say...

Of course, upon searching those songs up on Youtube, I realized that I can't exactly leave this post the way it is without mentioning another song from an entirely different album of theirs. Two albums in one post? Yeah, sue me. Come on! Do it! Anyway, back to my point. There is another album that I want to mention, and that is...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...eIsMissing.jpg
Someone Here Is Missing

I will be honest and say that this probably isn't listened to as much as it should be. I've given it a full listen I think 2 or 3 times, but there are a lot of tracks that standout and really deliver a powerful performance, one of which being...

Spoiler for video:

This song just really stands out as being one of their finest on the entire album, and I could just be completely biased. It starts off with a really cool electronica-techno feel but then it gets into the electric guitar and everything else. It's got a mixture, but it's mixed so well and goes even better with the vocals and whatever else. Definitely worthy of a listen or two.

I went searching for a specific track off of the Pokemon X soundtrack and I ended up finding something amazing. It was a few tracks from Pokemon Origins. I had no idea there was even a soundtrack for it, but I was just amazed. It just takes the original tracks from the original Pokemon games and just makes them so blow your head off badass.

I've been wanting to see what this show is like, but now this gives me more of a reason to check it out.

Paradise Lost have really managed to make a good impression with me lately. I was only familiar with them from the song No Celebration and I kept telling myself I needed to hear more of them because I really liked what I heard from that one song. And so I decided it'd be good to give a couple of their other records a listen.

Recently I heard Believe In Nothing. It's a very cool album and from what I can tell, really captures what the band is about. Although at this time, I haven't given their other albums a listen quite yet minus Symbol of Life which is where No Celebration is from. Tonight is a different album as well, as I have decided to give Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us a listen, and again, I am really diggin' what i'm hearing. I'm honestly shocked that I didn't get into these guys sooner, since they're right up my alley.

Just a fun fact, apparently Paradise Lost have had Devin Townsend as a special guest. That alone is reason enough for me to really hit myself over the head for not giving them a listen sooner. So far, there is nothing to complain about with this band.

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Love Beach
  • Holy crap that album art is just awful.
  • Not a single song on this album is worth listening to.
  • "Oh hey, this is Emerson, Lake, and Palmer so it might be good." is what I said thinking this would be a good album.
  • "Can I have my money back?" is what I said upon returning said album.
  • I imagine ELP we're thinking "hey, we're popular, let's bring back the Beach Boys style."
  • Did I mention this album is just awful?
  • Well it is, it's just awful.
  • The only reason someone would buy this album is to use the little booklet inside to use as spare toilet paper.

Yep one of the worst albums to be ever recorded by so-called esteemed artists, it's so bad that everybody needs to hear it.

As much as I don't like seeing Dio mixed with Black Sabbath, I have nothing bad to say about Dio as a vocalist. I think he's fantastic and I don't think we've had anyone else like him. I even have their On Stage double live album on vinyl and it is easily one of the greatest finds in my vinyl collection.

Speaking of cover songs, wait...was I talking about cover songs? Anyway, this one is just amazing. The original ain't all too bad either. I've never really been a humongous fan of ZZ Top, I just never really found the time to give them a chance.

I am of course talking about this cover version done by none other than...

I just love that it keeps the original sound while still being able to add the well known Sword album. This is a fine example of a cover done right.

Some songs I have really been enjoying lately. I've still been unable to get rid of this Riverside binge that i've been on.

This song is just everything I love about Steven Wilson. His emotionally captivating vocals and beautifully written lyrics are truly evident throughout this entire track. One of his best from his solo work.

This song is definitely up there with having one of my all time favorite intros of all time. I rarely even want to just listen to an intro to a song over and over again, but this one really just captivates me and reminds me a bit of 10,000 days from Tool, but only slightly.

I just love this entire song so much. Badass from start to finish.

I'm a little late to the month of March, but I will be doing a sort of daily "March Madness" sort of deal where I will post a song that appeals to me. Unfortunately, with the lack of time lately, I can't post much else, but hey, an entry is an entry, and I will add some commentary. So to start things off (better late than never)...

I was listening to a lot of Tool last night and when this song came on, I remembered the first time I heard it, and how many times I put it on repeat. The combination of both songs is just so perfect and really adds to how fantastic of an album this one is. As with any Tool song, the build up is so worth it.

I'm currently listening to The Seer and will try to give the others a listen in due time. Was giving Omniscience a listen as well earlier and really liked what I heard. This band may be a new favorite for me and I am hoping I cling onto them as I do with most new bands that I pick up on.

Continuing with Owl City, I wanted to mention a song that was on Maybe I'm Dreaming that I had not heard in a few years, maybe. It's titled "The Saltwater Room"

I also just noticed that this song is on Ocean Eyes as well, that's kind of odd, but it's a great song so hell...why not. I couldn't believe I remember all the lyrics to this song after not hearing it for so long. Just hearing this song again may have awakened my love for Owl City again, because I went through a long phase of just listening to music by him and others like him, and just loved it.

Last.fm may be wonky sometimes, but I have always loved the "new artists to library" thing it does when you listen to a band you've never listened to before. Helps me keep a good tab in case I want to go back and listen to a band I heard the night before or something. I've been doing that a lot lately too, and some of it has been just fantastic.

Just a few that I can see right now...

The Foreshadowing

It piqued my interest as soon as I read "gothic/doom metal" because that's a mixture I don't really have a lot of experience with, and it was pretty damn good.

My introduction of them was "Days of Nothing"

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...of+Nothing.jpg

I can't exactly say if it was a good or bad place to start, but it's definitely worth checking out. I'd say give it a listen and if you don't like it, give Oionos a listen, because I felt it had what I didn't find in the first album I listened to, both are pretty good in their own right.

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/50...+cover+png.png

Second World was the second to last album I attempted to listen to, but I couldn't really get into it, hence only have 2 tracks listed on my last.fm from the album. It's not that it was bad, I think I was just mentally exhausted and I just couldn't listen to anymore of it at the time, so I can't fairly rate it just yet, but I gave it an hour and listened to Oionos instead.

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...+cover+png.png

Needless to say, some damn good music here.

Another one from my "recently added" list is...

Black Sun Aeon

This is definitely one of those moments that i'm just struck off guard by an artist that i've never heard because of how amazing the music is. I'll only mention one album because it only took me one listen to really get into it straight away. After that, it was just smooth sailing and no disappointments.

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...1d45e3dc_o.jpg
Darkness Walks Beside Me

Don't let the cheesy album title push you away, this album is pretty damn good and has a good layout and the album as a whole is mixed together so well that it feels like a journey. It's really been a while since I was unexpectedly surprised by a melodic death metal because a lot of it just sounds the same to me now, but finding this one really got me back into the genre.

I honestly have no idea if i've talked about this in another entry, but I figure i'd bring it up (again). Reinxeed's 1912 album has been something I've been listening to almost non stop. It feels like an addiction now where I can't even go a day without listening to one song off of the album. My last.fm is proof of this:

http://i62.tinypic.com/2e3o082.png

I think one of the main reasons why I have grasped onto this album for so long is simply because it's a concept album done right. It's based on the history of the Titanic, and lyrically it does a fantastic job. It also paints a picture as to what it would have been like to be present for that time in history. This song is one of the finest examples of that:

"Welcome to all, climb aboard
To the biggest luxury that man has build
Sail far away for a new horizon, everyone's invited
All alone on the ocean they declined
The warnings that they've got
"Iceberg ahead, if you turn it's too late"
But no one cared
"

If that opening doesn't get you instantly hooked, I don't know what does. The song is catchy and beautifully structured.

The album as a whole is nothing short of amazing, and definitely worth a listen if you're into a really well done concept album.

It's been a while, I know, but i've definitely been doing a lot of music listening in that time. I have seemed to build up a certain list of songs that I listen to at least once a day. I don't know if everybody does that, but I love listening to a song I love at least 1000 times. One of which is:

Go Gentle - Robbie Williams

I really don't know why I like this song, but it's just catchy, the man has a beautiful voice, and it's just a very nice song to listen to. I hear it at work a lot and I get goosebumps when it comes on. I haven't really done a lot of searching when it comes to Robbie Williams, but that may change, for now I'm content with this one song.

Opeth - Pale Communion

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...um_artwork.jpg

I am a pretty big fan of the more mellow side of Opeth. My favorite album by them before this release was Damnation, and upon this album release, on first listen, it surpassed Damnation with no trouble. There's really not a lot of bad I can say about this album other than the fact that I wish it was longer. The starting track "Eternal Rain Will Come" just gets the proginess going right away with no breath in between, and then starts to get to that more mellow Opeth sound that I have come to love. Truly a remarkable way to start off the album. Of course I don't really have a favorite track off the album as it really just fits together so well and feels like one long proggy track that I could listen to an endless number of times.

I'm happy to see Opeth still doing work. When Storm Corrosion was released, I wasn't really looking into either persons projects to see if there were anything new to come, so one could say that this new Opeth was a bit of a surprise, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless. I have read that Steven Wilson does have something up his sleeve, but it won't be released for quite some time, and as far as Porcupine Tree as a whole goes, I know nothing of any new work on the horizon, but perhaps it will come as another pleasant surprise. I can hope.

Definitely an album that one who's really into the mellow side of Opeth would love to hear. On that same note, this could mean that we could possibly expect a heavier Opeth album next. In a few years, of course. No rush though, as this album truly holds a remarkable place in my favorite Opeth albums, and pushes Damnation down to number 2, and this one takes the crown as my favorite mellow Opeth album. With Deliverance being the number 1 heavy album by them.

Lamb of God has been a band that I go back and forth with. I'm either really in the mood for the heavy riffs and vocals, or they just aren't my cup of tea. It's a love hate relationship and I love it.

I went way too long without ever diving into the earlier releases of Lamb of God. The albums such as Ashes of the Wake, As The Palaces Burn, and New American Gospel. I think what it was is that when I first heard Sacrament, I was used to hearing the growls really crisp and could understand everything that was going on, little did I know it is one of the least heavy albums they have in their catalog.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...f_the_Wake.jpg

Ashes of the Wake is the one out of the three earlier releases that I have found the most enjoyment out of. Honestly, I can say that Hourglass has to be one of the best metal songs I've ever heard. It has everything I could ask for in a perfect Lamb of God song. Heavy as all hell riffs, fantastic vocals, and just sounds dirty to the point that it makes me want to rip my shirt off and fight someone. Of course, I think that's what Lamb of God go for.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...lbum_cover.jpg

New American Gospel is another one I want to put a bit more personal info on because I actually grew up owning this album, but never actually listened to it in full, and god damn I wish I did. I was only familiar with Black Label off the album, and never bothered with the rest for some reason. Perhaps I was just too young to really appreciate what they were going for, but now I get it. It's the raw, gritty, heavy metal that they are known for.

The sad reality is, I wish I had listened to these albums before the few times i'd seen them. I imagine my time at those concerts would have been far more enjoyable. Not saying they weren't enjoyable, but they would have been even better. I'd happily see them again in a heartbeat, they always will have a place in my heart even if sometimes they just don't rub me the right way.

I wish I had an excuse for not updating this journal as much as you are used to, honestly my life has just gotten really busy, with work, and catching up on sleep. It's hard to do both and do things like write entries that I have been wanting to write. Unfortunately, my brain doesn't work as creatively when i'm tired so most of the ideas I have for an entry usually comes up at the beginning of the day, and by the end of the day, I just don't feel like writing much. But fear not, this journal is still as important to me as it was when I started it. I've put a lot of effort and work into it. So entries will come back. For the time being, i'll just leave you with this.

You ever get the feeling that when you discover a new band, you just know you're going to love them for a long time? You ever run into the situation where you completely forget about said band and find them again only to realize how amazing they are? That happened to me last night.

I was transferring my backed-up backup of all my music that I have collected over the years and placed it into a safe place where I feel I may never lose, so you could say it's a backed up backup of a backup. Anyway, I found an album I discovered a while ago and decided to give it a listen and boy was I just kicking myself for never putting this on my mp3 player.

A Swarm of The Sun - Zenith
http://i60.tinypic.com/x5p8g7.png

Not even close to one of the first post-rock'ish albums I've ever listened to, but through the years, i've sort of become a bit biased in the sense that I'll only really enjoy a specific type of post-rock. pg.lost's Key and the Yes I Am EP are good examples as well as God Is An Astronaut's Age of The Fifth Sun is another fine example of what I want to hear when I listen to post-rock, and Zenith falls under that category. It's got that atmospheric and heavy sound throughout the album that isn't just constant repetitiveness leading nowhere, it keeps interest. Plus you get to hear some wonderful vocals which I think really do add something great to an already great album. An example of that would be this song here:

This song alone is reason enough to listen to this album. It captures the calmness and heaviness that go together so well throughout and is definitely one of the strongest tracks on the entire album.

Casualties of Cool - Casualties of Cool
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...es_of_Cool.jpg
Devin Townsend, Ché Aimee Dorval, and Morgan Ågren

Casualties of Cool, the debut album for a country rock group featuring the genius like maniac, Devin Townsend. When I first heard about this album, and what genre it would be falling under, I immediately thought, "man, Devin is really going to blow this out of the water", and that is precisely what happened.

When I listened to it for the first time, I was caught a little bit off guard by the fact that Devin doesn't really sing a lot throughout the whole album, and that's one thing I was really wanting to hear, but I will say that Che's vocals really do add a great ambiance to the music, and her voice is beautiful and very easy to like. So it's a sacrifice I was willing to make. Other than the lack of Devin's vocals throughout, there is still that expert production quality that is sort of expected in a Devin Townsend album. Everything sounds very well leveled and nothing is too overpowering as is expected with an album by Devin.

It's obvious that Devin did his research in what a country rock album should sound like, and maybe there are some things that could change about the album as a whole, but honestly, as a debut into a new genre, he really did an outstanding job. As would be expected, he also adds his own magic into the album making it his own album and not just a typical country rock album. It's strictly a Devin Townsend album and there's really not much more to say about it.

One of the catchiest tracks on the album has to be this:

It's time for...

First up we have Bring Me The Horizon with 685 plays. I don't know how long it's been since I listened to them, but whenever I did, I must have not know anything about music, or maybe I was just really into ****ty music, hell I don't know. I will admit that every now and again I can get some enjoyment out of Suicide Season. That's not taking away from the fact that this band is the epitome of awful. It's bands like this that give metalcore/deathcore/etc a bad rep, and honestly, it's really not that bad of a genre, I know a few bands that are fantastic, but unfortunately you don't hear of any of them. Know why? Because bands like Bring Me The Horizon take the spotlight.

Let's also not forget that BMTH also tried to be edgy by taking one of their more well known albums, and just making it a "remixed" album. Can't say I found a lot of enjoyment out of that either. Honestly, I'm surprised I didn't just blow my brains out from how bad my ears hurt. Though, I suppose someone might like it.

I know it's also really cliche to put mention this band when talking about bands that just straight up suck, but what other reason do I need. I'm certainly not going to talk about how good they are, minus the mention of Suicide Season, it's a guilty pleasure.

Will I still listen to them? Perhaps. Do I need to explain why? Nope. But there's no denying that they just suck.

So lately, there have been two games on my mind almost every day and only one of which is one I have been actively playing, so i'll start with that one.

Borderlands 2

As I have mentioned before on this forum, i'm late to the party when it comes to playing this series, but when I heard about a new one coming out, I told myself it was finally time to get into these games. Not to forget the fact that a close friend of mine gifted me this one through Steam months ago, so that's an added bonus.

I found the first one at work coincidentally for like...5 bucks, so even at the start, I knew I was getting a killer deal. Everything about Borderlands is fantastic and the game play was very easy to get into. I had seen people play it before but never did for myself so I guess I sort of knew what to expect while at the same time not really knowing what to expect. Definitely one of the better "first games" in a series that I have played, though honorable mention does go to the Amnesia series and Dead Space.

Then it came the time to play the second one (i had beat the first one) and holy crap, everything that I wanted from the first one that wasn't in it was put into the second one, and then some. The new UI, the fact that you can jump from high places and not get hurt, and the fact that some weapons can be thrown like a grenade on reload. They really outdid themselves on this one and it just makes me more excited to see how they can 1 up themselves with the Pre-Sequel coming out, which of course I am going to play. Anyway, I won't say much more since i've not beaten this one yet.

And now time to touch on a game that I am just disappointed in even buying upon release...

Fable Anniversary

I'm really sad to see the outcome of this release because i'm sure i'm not alone when I say that I was super pumped to see this game come back in new high definition graphics, but unfortunately that's all it is. It's honestly just the first game with new graphics, nothing else, and that includes the glitches and bugs that were present in the first game. Granted, they have been sending out new updates to fix said bugs, but i've been dealing with a game breaking bug and i'm not the only one who has been dealing with it. There's a studder with every third or forth step I take, which makes the game completely unbearable to play. Some have said that you can just look past it and play it, but I can't. I was expecting to be playing a whole new version of the game that I absolutely loved as a kid, but all I got was a graphic revamp, and that's it. I mean, you shouldn't be forced to play a PC game on a great PC, and have it feel like you're playing on a 20 year old Xbox, with the disc being all scratched up.

I'm sincerely hoping that a future release will fix the studder, otherwise that game will just collect dust.

DEVIN TOWNSEND REVIEWED

As it's probably obvious, i'm taking on the task of (attempting) to review each and every one of Devin Townend's albums, and yes, that includes his other projects like Casualties of Cool and Strapping Young Lad. I have done some reviews of albums that he's done in my journal already, but these ones will be more fresh and up to date on my opinions on certain albums. Also on that note, if by some chance I don't get to reviewing albums that I have reviewed before, I will still link those specific reviews in this post since it's related to this little project.

Now to start things off, let's talk about the man behind the voice, Devin Townsend. Who is this guy? Well, in my opinion, he's one of the finest examples of having passion for his music in this day and age. Some have called him a genius, others have called him a lunatic, I consider him a crazy genius. Honestly, it's tough to match him up with other artists because he tends to put himself into situations that allow him to experiment with certain genres. For example, he experimented with blues rock with Casualties of Cool, and went heavier than hell with Deconstruction, and then of course you have the AOR type of deal with Epicloud (which may or may not be accurate). Not only that, but once you hear an album by him, you would think the man has been doing that specific genre his whole life, which in some cases I suppose that is true. Some have also said he makes clones of himself because there's no way one man can make that much music and continue to be successful. Honestly, I believe that's where the passion comes in. Live footage can also back me up on this, Devin Townsend has an amazing time making the music he makes, and really enjoys experimenting with sounds and other things. One thing is for sure, that in this entire Devin Townsend catalog review thingy, it's going to be very difficult to pick the best from the worst, because each and every album is unique in it's own way. Maybe I won't even pick worst albums, i'll just review them randomly. One thing is certain though, I'm going to be listening to a lot of Devin Townsend in the next couple weeks, while taking notes. It's going to be a hell of a ride.

This here is a list of the albums that have been reviewed, once an album has been reviewed, the album title will contain a link that will lead to that review.

Solo albums:
Ocean machine: Biomech
Infinity
Physicist
Terria
Devlab
The Hummer
Ziltoid the Omniscient
Z2. Dark Matters

Casualties of Cool:
Casualties of Cool

Strapping Young Lad:
Decision was made that I will not be including any Strapping Young Lad reviews in this project. Perhaps another time

Just a side note, these aren't going to be professional reviews, since I'm not the strongest at writing reviews, but they will have my passion and overall opinion of the album, which I suppose is what an album review is all about. Some will be short and sweet, and others may be lengthy, but they will get reviewed nonetheless.

Ziltoid The Omniscient

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...cientcover.jpg

The year is 2007, and what Devin Townsend releases is easily one of the greatest albums to ever hit anybody's music catalog. Devin Townsend brings some of his finest examples of how quirky and weird he can be, and does it while still managing to make it sound so perfect. As I have said prior to this, Devin Townsend is considered a lunatic and a genius, and very very nerdy, and it's extremely evident in this album, but mostly you get a taste of what is to come in the opening track "ZTO"

Spoiler for ZTO video:

Some have said that this is one of his greatest works, and I would agree to that, only for the fact that it's perfect for anyone who's into a nerdy fictional concept with rock opera-esque musicianship.

You're brought (as a listener) into a universe that is fictional, yet you feel like something like this could really happen, only to realize you wake up from a dream and wonder where the hell you went while you slept. Not to mention, the way they portray Ziltoid is perfection. A martian with a thirst for....yes, coffee. And black coffee at that. He has good taste in my opinion. It's spacey, and you feel like you're commanding a ship with Devin Townsend in the seat next to you, and you're just waiting for the moment that he'll just go completely insane and shoot meteors to blow up the ship you sit in. But of course, you feel like finding the "perfect cup of coffee" is important enough for Devin to keep his cool and progress with the mission at hand.

It's very difficult for me to pick a favorite track from this because it's a story being told in musical form, so just choosing one is difficult, but if there was a time where someone asked me to pick one, and allowed it to have no back story, and they just wondered what I find to be the catchiest track, it would definitely be Hyperdrive.

Spoiler for Hyperdrive video:

I guess it would also be good to mention that they did a remake of the song on the Addicted! album, it's not my preferred version, but it's still fantastic.

It's been said that this album would be perfect for someone who's not only nerdy, but enjoys a fantastic rock opera album. Because simply put, that's what you'll get. And you just have to be able to laugh at the ridiculousness that goes into this album. The only unfortunate part is that it ends, which I suppose is the same for pretty much any Devin Townsend album. You just feel the urge to ask for more, but you know deep down, there's not a lot of time between new releases from him. So you just wait patiently until that happens.

'Hyperdrive' is a favorite from the first Ziltoid record for me too. One hell of a musical fishhook that's for sure...

I'll be interested in seeing how the rest of your Devin series plays out. Some of the Devin "soundalikes" out there like Ramage Inc. and The Omega Experiment are pretty interesting too, so I'd recommend giving them a spin at some point. :p:
