Demo Today Gone Tomorrow: I Couldn't Think of Anything More Clever - Part VI

Dr. Shrinker: Wedding the Grotesque - 1989

I remember BastardofYoung mentioning this death metal band way back when, so I'm giving them a shot.

God damn, that is some extreme shit for 1989. Obviously a grindcore influence there. The music is heavy and brutal, but the shrieking vocals are rather cartoonish and seem out of place.

Hahaha! The production on track two just totally fucked up. The audio went out in the left side of my headphones and then came back. I replayed it and apparently that's just what it sounds like. Sweet.

The music is pretty sweet, but those vocals are really making it hard to care. No wonder they never got very far. They really needed to boot him out of the band. They're a death metal band, not Destruction.

Yeah, I think I'm done. The vocalist has me checked out at this point and I don't see it getting any better.

Spoiler for ****:

Bullet for My Valentine: Scream Aim Fire

I'm bored and can't think of anything better to do so I'm going to bang my head against a wall and give Bullet for My Valentine the shot that I've never had any interest in giving them. Lord protect me.

Scream, aim, suck.

Spoiler for Gag.:
This album is terrible and makes Trivium look original so I'm just going to post a picture of Bianca Beauchamp to show my complete and utter contempt for Bullet for My Valentine.

Now that's some hot business. Far superior to Bullet for My Valentine.

Yeah, BFMV is more packaging than actual original music. I mean jeeze, just look at that stunning cover art. I must buy it.

You need to get your hands on Dayglo Abortions - Here Today, Guano Tomorrow right this very second.

Here Today, Guano Tomorrow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Do it now, before BFMV leaves a nasty stain.

You should've listened to The Poison. "Tears Don't Fall", "Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow" and "Hit The Floor" were their good songs from that album. You might feel the same way about it but give it a shot at least.

I stopped listening to them after Scream Aim Fire so I don't know how their newer albums differ.

They would have to be an entirely different band to make me care about their first album. Everything about them is so watered down and dull and derivative that I almost find it funny that anyone actually listens to them. At least Limp Bizkit have a certain...Limp Bizkitness about them. Bullet for My Valentine have no identity of their own and can be replaced by any one of ten thousand other bands. I couldn't even be bothered to actually review this album I was so indifferent to it.

Slayer: Divine Intervention

Confession time. Never listened to this album. Or Diabolus in Musica. I've listened to every other Slayer album about fifty million times but I just never got around to these two except for maybe a song or two here and there. Time to rectify this.

It's starting off rather badass with "Killing Fields", but I'm gonna have to take points off for Tom's voice. I think I'm hearing the transitional point when his voice started to give out and he switched to dull screaming. It's still decent, but it's not the same as it was.

Aside from Tom's voice, which isn't really bad so much as it's just not great, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this. It's pretty much the same thing as Season's In the Abyss. Which is sort of my problem with post-Reign In Blood Slayer. As much as I dig South of Heaven and Seasons In the Abyss there was always a feeling of "business as usual". There was progression sure, but the days of Slayer blowing you away with each and every release were gone and they were now playing to a formula. It was a good formula no doubt, but they had ceased to be a band that chilled one to the core because you had a pretty good idea what they were gonna do next and when the mystery is gone then so are the scares.

A little over half way and I'm not particularly impressed. There are parts that make me go, "Hey, that's pretty sweet!" but the actual songs aren't really blowing me away. At least on the previous two albums there were some truly knockout songs like "Dead Skin Mask" or "Mandatory Suicide" that could make up for the formulaic music, but on here I'm not really hearing those.

Alright, "SS-3" is pretty badass.

I'm pretty much done with the album now, and I'm gonna have to take a pass on Diabolus in Musica for the moment. I've had enough mediocre Slayer for one day.

Spoiler for Did you know that Slayer used to be called Dragonslayer? Bullet dodged.:

I'm a metalhead. I'm gonna cover some metal in here at some point. I just prefer not to make it a focus since I've already listened to so much of it and I'd rather do stuff that I'm not as familiar with.

Author and Punisher: Ursus Americanus

So I was just in the middle of reviewing Songs for the Deaf by QotSA while listening to it for the first time when I listened to a random song posted by Blarobbarg and I completely lost interest in continuing what I was already doing. That song was by Author and Punisher and it totally rearranged my shit.

Alright, I know almost nothing about electronica, industrial, etc or whatever the hell applies to this artist, but all I know is that this rules. Watching some live footage of this dude in action is just crazy. He's just surrounded by homemade machines and robotics that are just banging themselves against each other and making an insanely awesome racket. Fucking epic.

I guess this would be industrial with a heavy drone/doom influence. I've never really been the biggest drone fan, but this is an entirely different kettle of dead fish. Apparently the sound of the apocalypse is captured far better by homemade machines than just heavily distorted guitars. I'm sort of reminded of Godflesh actually, but I've never been the biggest fan of that group. I mean they're cool and all, but this makes them look dull by comparison.

First song "Terrorbird" has "vocals" that really give the song a grotesque feel that is just...fan-fucking-tastic. Along with the brutal, pounding whatever-it-is-that's-creating-the-bass they create an atmosphere that must be what Skynet's nightmares feel like. It would also be the perfect soundtrack to the movie version of "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream". The more I listen to it the more I want to listen to it again and again.

I've been looking for something to listen to that's not rock/metal for a little while, and this might just be the artist to introduce me to another musical world.

Spoiler for Holy **** nuts, Batman!:

The only Slayer album that I could never get into, or better said reach a strong conclusion about, in the end I just rated it mediocre rather than bad.
