Psychedelia
I decided to start a journal. The journal is going to focus on psychedelic music, and its branch genres and all the great music that falls into it.

I heard " Time to Pretend " and " Electric Feel " on tv a few times, and eventually decided that I liked them enough to buy the album. When I bought the album I found that all the songs that were not released as singles were the ones I was most drawn to, the most psychedelic ones. It was far more experimental and progressive, I heard Bowie and the Beatles and Pink Floyd, and every song was like stepping into another dimension with its own strange atmosphere. This was when my life literally changed from the music I had heard. It was in the light orange earliness of 2010's hazey and sunny summer. |
I started listening to Tame Impala in the summer of 2010. I think the first song I heard was this.

I will never forget being in a car driving up through Donegal up to the Rory Gallagher festival on a sunny day listening to every one of their songs over and over again with scenery like this flying past the open windows of the car with fresh wind blowing onto my face. I felt like I had smoked 50 blunts. Their music was relaxed, spacey and hit me in my chest.(thats the best way I can describe it) It seems pretty appropriate that their debut album was called "Innerspeaker". I LOVE psychedelic music. Something about it has always struck a chord with me ever since I listened to Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. The experimental sound in psychedelic music is far more interesting than anything else really.

So now we are going to go back in time. When I was discovering this kind of music over the summer of 2010, I decided to look back to the Beatles(ONE of the pioneers of psychedelia). John Lennon had this rare talent for ****ing being a legend. haha! Anyone who says they don't like psychedelic music, are either lying or haven't heard this song. We forget how good the Beatles actually were because we are constantly reminded, but ****... I can honestly say that if I had heard this stuff for the first time as contemporary music out of the blue, I would be BLOWWWWN AWAAAy. Not in an instantaneous way, I had always been aware of it growing up, but when I really started listening to it....I was like....Woah... It just really spoke to me out of nowhere when I was about 19/ 20. I understand what George Harrison was telling me in "Within You Without You" and what John Lennon was telling me in "Tomorrow Never Knows". One thing that attracted me to this sound was how chaotic and mad it was( Syd went a bit mad towards the end of his career, before he left Pink Floyd. ) This was my favourite period for Pink Floyd, there is really something magic about this sound that I can't describe properly. Maybe there is a nostalgic aspect to this for me but I can say that I never heard anything like this before I had heard it, and still haven't afterwards (to state the obvious :P).
