A Journey to Nowhere
 

I'm not nor will I ever be one of the most active members on the site but as far as music goes I think I can hold my own with pretty much anybody so why not a journal?

This is basically going to reflect the way I listen to new music which essentially is a combination of trying familiar genres and taking leaps of faith based on nothing but a band name, or an album cover, or album tags...whatever catches my eye.

So pretty much give this a read if you want to check out a random album and don't be afraid to ask for a link.

I'm also not the world's wordiest person and I really don't listen to music in any technical way at all so don't expect professional reviews. Most of the time I'll probably just post a few quick thoughts and a couple of songs from youtube but I guarantee if you follow along you'll have fun :).

Unicorn Dream Attack - Love Bits

Unicorn Dream Attack is a chiptune band that simply excels at creating fun and catchy songs. I wish the whole album was available on youtube b/c picking songs out of sequence hardly does it justice. Every song flows perfectly into the next one and if you were alive during the days of early video games a little nostalgia is unavoidable.

I can't remember exactly how I stumbled across this album but I'm thankful to whoever brought it to my attention and I highly recommend checking it out.

Caravan Palace - Caravan Palace

One of the things that draws me into music is the energy and it doesn't get much better than Caravan Palace. It's just a fun ride from start to finish and it never slows down.

The tags that led me to downloading this album were:

With tags like that what could possibly prevent this from being an amazing album? The correct answer is nothing. If you're a world music fan and you haven't hear this do yourself a favor and obtain it as quickly as possible. You'll thank me later.

I've always been a big fan of string instruments in general and this is probably one of my favorite cello albums ever.

Zoe Keating - One Cello X 16: Natoma

Zoe Keating is simply amazingly talented. She's a solo cellist and you can call her music anything from neoclassical to avant-garde to experimental but whatever you decide to call it it's just beautiful. I downloaded one of her albums on a whim while looking for some good studying music a while back and was simply blown away. I just couldn't stop listening to the album over and over and over. The sounds she manages to produce just on her cello are mind boggling and you really have to hear it to believe it.

If you're a fan of music and haven't heard this album you need to listen to it right now! And granted I'll probably say that about every album I'll post in this thread but I'll never mean it more than now.

I guess getting into indie is always inevitable but I think this album is a truly amazing release and one of the best so far this year.

The River Empires - The River Empires (Epilogue)

I usually try to avoid doing this but I can't think of an easier way to explain the album's concept than a little copy and paste

The melodies and vocals are superb and once you start listening you find it impossible to stop. The lyrics are really good as well managing to tell the story without hurting the music which seems to happen a lot on this type of album.

What caught my eye and made me check out this album where the tags

and after I finished the listening once I immediately started listening again which is a rarity for me, it usually takes a day or so to make my way back to albums I like for another listen.

After my first listen I did a little research and found the bands lineup consisted of some of my favorite artists: Jeremiah Lockwood of Balkan Beat Box, Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, two guys from Antibalas and a member of Arcade Fire. You just can't go wrong with such an assembly of talent.

The Youtube samples hardly do the album justice because they're all from live performances but they do give you a great idea of what The Sway Machinery sounds like.


If you want to skip the story the song starts at around 2:03 but it adds a lot


An audience recording during one of the stand out tracks on the album...It sounds way better recorded right...trust me

Various Artists - Ninja Tune XX - Sixx CDs

A box set celebrating 20 years of Ninja Tune.

It literally took me a day and a half to finish listening to this for the first time but there was never a moment where I wasn't enjoying the music which says a lot.

This 6 disc box set is a compilation of Ninja Tune artists past and present and it does a great job of reminding everybody that Ninja Tune is still the ****.

The Ninja Tune label focuses on:
-jazz
-electronic
-trip.hop
-breaks
-hip.ho
-dubstep

All of which are genres I enjoy and when you pluck out 6 Cd's worth of the best songs by the artists making this music you're either going to have an epic failure or success and thankfully this was the latter.

This box set is also a great way to find new music to listen too because there were definitely some good featured artists who I had never heard before that I plan on checking out solely based on the strength of their featured songs on this box set.

I've always been a big Mars Volta fan so when I saw Juan Alderete had a side project I made it a mission to listen to it as soon as possible which might have been the best decision I've ever made in my life.

The album is essentially and experimental instrumental rock album that's mind blowing from start to finish. I've played this for quite a few people and every one of them fell completely in love with it by the time the first track was over.

Alas the songs I really wanted to post links to in this thread aren't on youtube so I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to post them sometime soon, but these songs are still really good.

The best solution I can find is check out their band camp and play track #1 Brothers Gonna Work it Out using the link below. Listen to this before the Youtube ones is my advice.

I stumbled across this album while looking for some funky trip.hop and fell in love the moment the first song started playing. The combination of scratching, fading, sampling, guitar and bass is simply beautiful.

Every track has a different feel and uniqueness to it yet they meld together splendidly.

This is the perfect album for just sitting around and grooving to the music or providing entertainment as you travel from point A to point B.

Another gem I stumbled across. This album is amazing from start to finish

I don't know how I've made it this long without hearing this because it immediately became a permanent addition to my ipod. I know there's a ton of great music floating around out and finding albums like this makes my quest for the next album I love all the more enjoyable.

This album is upbeat and the perfect chilling music at the same time.

Wow thanks for that man. I've never heard Koby Israelite though I seem to have heard two of the albums in the Book of Angels series, which I didn't realize was a series even though it's clearly in the album names. Go figure.

Guess I'm going to have to check the rest out now.
