I think they just preferred playing live, I was surprised by their other material besides these videos and wish I could've found something like that to post. Ah well. Shocked to find someone on MB that knew them as well hey hahaha... For me it was Siamese Dream and the song 'Disarm'. Glad to hear that the album had such a big effect on you as well. |

Vanishing Point - Embrace The Silence (2005) 1./ Hollow (7:07) 2./ My Virture (5:24) 3./ If Only I (5:21) 4./ Live To Live (5:55) 5./ Embraced (6:42) 6./ Season Of Sundays (6:40) 7./ Once A Believer (7:01) 8./ Reason (6:06) 9./ Breathe (6:29) 10./ Somebody Save Me (4:29) 11./ Insight (5:09) 12./ A Life Less (7:04) 13./ As I Reflect (6:08) Vanishing Points last.fm page This isn't a band I grew up listening to, but I like them nonetheless. A great Aussie metal band and the first of many metal albums I am going to post. Vanishing Point can go from having a blazing song and follow up with a nice ballad. That sort of leaves me divided; I still don't know if I prefer the lighter side or the heavier side. Both are fantastic regardless. 'Breathe' is such a beautiful song and might be my favourite from this album if it wasn't for 'Season Of Sundays'. Embrace The Silence flows as an album and has reoccurring musical themes throughout that you may notice. Although Youtube audio quality sucks I hope you can enjoy this very underrated Aussie band as much as I do. Last edited by DiSTANToblivion; 03-26-2010 at 10:30 AM. |

Trying my best at an Album Review... :-S
Transatlantic - The Whirlwind (2009) DISC 1: 1./ Overture / Whirlwind (9:54) 2./ The Wind Blew Them All Away (6:10) 3./ On the Prowl (6:03) 4./ A Man Can Feel (6:35) 5./ Out of the Night (4:22) 6./ Rose Colored Glasses (7:54) 7./ Evermore (4:10) 8./ Set Us Free (5:03) 9./ Lay Down Your Life (5:11) 10./ Pieces of Heaven (2:17) 11./ Is It Really Happening? (8:11) 12./ Dancing with Eternal Glory / Whirlwind (Reprise) (12:04) DISC 2: 1./ Spinning (9:58) 2./ Lenny Johnson (4:20) 3./ For Such A Time (5:23) 4./ Lending a Hand (8:43) 5./ The Return of the Giant Hogweed (8:26) 6./ A Salty Dog (4:59) 7./ I Need You, Pt. 1 & Pt. 2 (4:39) 8./ Soul Sacrifice (10:00) Transatlantics last.fm page Okay so I thought I'd change things up just a bit for now. Here is something I've only recently brought but I think needs a mention in this journal. This is Transatlantics new one 'The Whirlwind'... The word 'epic' gets thrown around a lot, it's often misused too. With this album I have to say that it is one time that epic is fully deserving of it's place. After co-founder of Transatlantic Neal Morse (Spocks Beard) became a born again christian he decided he would venture into christian rock. This unfortunately meant the end of both Spocks Beard and Transatlantic with Morse, however he and other co-founder Mike Portnoy (of Dream Theater) both decided to get back together and form Transatlantic for one more album - 'The Whirlwind'. It was something that Transatlantic fans were longing to hear, intrigued by what the progressive supergroup would produce next... 'The Whirlwind' is an album that loves all of it's former influences and pays homage to them. Bands like Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Led Zepplin and even The Beatles all can be felt throughout it's 77 minute long journey. That's right, 'The Whirlwind' is not an album divided up with various tracks for you to sift through, it is a 77 minute-long song that is best appreciated from start to finish. There are no real breaks in the flow of the album overall and it plays beautifully right from the opening Overture to the stunning Finale. A lot of people would hear the length of the album and be put off initially. I have to say that you really, really need to have an understanding and appreciation for all things Prog before you sit down to take 'The Whirlwind' in. Saying that this one, 77 minute-long masterpiece is to be taken as a whole also makes it hard to pick out a highlight, the whole thing really shines and is a highlight altogether. On my first listen I was blown away (no pun intended) by 'Rose Colored Glasses' and if I was forced to pick only one song to highlight the album I would choose that. Every band member gets to do what they do best here and are all having fun crafting this amazing nostalgic marvel. Even as 'The Whirlwind' pays tribute to former bands it never feels tied down by their sound, it feels fresh still, just with an oldschool flair. I will give extra kudos to Portnoys drumming on this album (even though he is always fantastic), opening the album the way he does is a great listen. There is a 2nd Disc in the Special Edition release with new original music and some great covers, so definately check that out as well (and that is a whopper of a disc too, with a length of close to an hour). So take a an epic, progressive, nostalgic journey into the heart of 'The Whirlwind' and prepare to get blown away... ...and then fly on back to hit repeat 9.5/10 Last edited by DiSTANToblivion; 02-18-2010 at 08:49 AM. |

though i am slightly disturbed that hummer is not a highlighted track. that song is genius.

So... it's been quite a while since I posted anything in my journal. I call it lack of motivation, or me just being lazy. I'll get right back to highlighting some more Aussie artists and reviewing anything that I find interesting soon. For now I'll post 3 songs by various Aussie talent that I am digging right now:
Dead Letter Circus - 'Lines' (from their self-titled EP)
Birds Of Tokyo - 'Medicine' (from their album 'Universes') Sleep Parade - 'Everyday' (from their album 'Things Can Always Change') Last edited by DiSTANToblivion; 03-23-2010 at 08:03 AM. |

I will have to delve into this journal a lot more when I get time. I always appreciate people championing their homeland bands especially if they haven't had decent exposure and there are quite a few names I haven't heard before.

I didn`t realize you had a journal on here and like Jack said there are quite a few bands on here that I`ve never heard of, even though I`ve got some Vanishing Point stuff lined up to listen to.
Funnily enough, I was listening to "Siamese Dream" last night and without doubt the album is an icon of the early 1990`s with its wash of noise and delightful melodies all underpinned by Jimmy Chamberlain`s amazing drumming, the group were never the same after he left. I think that "Mellon Collie..." is even superior to this album but without doubt "Siamese Dream" is the most representative of the group. |

I think I'll go into more detail for the next few. I'm going to highlight The Whitlams next, more than likely. Quote:

Band Highlight: The Whitlams (1992-present) ************************* Band Info: last.fm page Wiki page ************************* ************************* Ahh... The Whitlams... I absolutely love this band. All through school I listened to them, their piano rock/pop always saw me through everything... Now I won't go into gritty detail about the band itself, if you want to know more about them then please click on one of the links above. I just want to share some of my thoughts and experiences that I've had from listening to their great music through the years. The first time I ever heard The Whitlams was over the radio, suprisingly, as I never really bothered listening to the radio at all growing up. I was heading home from school, in a very bad mood after having such a horrible day. 'Thank You (For Loving Me At My Worst)' (I've put the amazing live performance here) was playing and I could feel myself listening and feeling instantly better. I waited in my Dads car to hear them say who they just played but they didn't say. I asked my Dad but he didn't know who they were either. I was a little bummed at discovering a song that really picked me up and then not even knowing the band it came from. I eventually rediscovered The Whitlams through a friend that played the song one day out of pure random luck, he told me who they were, and from that point on I was a devoted fan. To my surprise, after buying a few of their albums, I found The Whitlams to be very versatile. One moment they would be happy-go-lucky with bouncy catchy songs, another moment they would have a beautiful ballad here and there. They also aren't afraid to be tongue in cheek with songs like 'I Make Hamburgers'. That song is about, well, making hamburgers... and scoring chicks because they like you making hamburgers . Very comedic yes. Out of all their songs that I found I was the most shocked to hear 'The Road Is Lost' which actually has a fair bit of rapping. I normally don't like rap as a whole but when something as meaningful as that comes along I just can't ignore it. I love their versatility, their ability to evolve and change, trying new things. I hope you like what I've provided (forgiving YouTubes quality), This is only a sample of a very impressive catalogue. Their albums are all gold, I only wish i could provide more videos for you all. Let me know what you thought. |
