Glasvegas are a Scottish band, who formed in 2003. In surprisesurprise, Glasgow.

This review isn't necessarily a review about how good the songs produced are or analysis of lyrics etc. It will be partially that, but thats not what it's all about, it's getting across that I want you to download it!!! haha.
I want to review them, not only because they are scottish, but because to me.. They are unbelievably unique in my opinion, I don't think I've heard a band/artist which sing in accent. But Glasvegas do, and maybe it's because I'm scottish I especially love them, probable. Nevertheless great band, great ideas, and they have an amazingly unique advantage.

From what I've gathered from simply listening to Glasvegas. They're from roughly the same area as me, I know this because Polmont (track 6) is a young offenders institution which is very local to me, its basically a jail for young people.

Flowers and Football tops, ties a nursery rhyme in with it (I'm sure it's a nursery rhyme, correct me if I'm wrong.)

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
I hope you notice
How much I loved you
How could they take my sunshine away

the song is mostly about a father worrying about his song not being home yet, the police come to his door etc.
I mostly think that the songs name came from the fact that when someone dies (Car crash, suicide, drowning etc.) Flowers and personal football tops are placed at the site where the person had died.. It's a common thing in scotland, and until i really listened to it, I never understood it.. Or knew what it was about. I really realise now that it's the perfect title for the song of a boy who has died through whatever reasons.

Geraldine has a more upbeat eh.. beat :laughing: compared to the rest of Glasvegas' songs (most are about sad/depressing things) Geraldine is the name of the social worker in this song.. and he sings about how she helps him take his prescription etc, its all really pathetic sounding, but it's an absolute winner of a song.

It's my own cheating heart that makes me cry is another example of a song that uses childish sayings/nursery rhymes in it,
he also makes a reference to an Oasis song, I'm unsure wither it's deliberate or not, still he mentions "Whats the story morning glory" I can't get across how great I think this album is honestly.

Go Square Go right so, if I said "square go" to someone it would indicate I wanted to fight them (for those who don't know)

what I also like about this song as it takes a saying renound in club culture and they put it in to their song (obviously it's going to appeal to me ;))

Just makin' sure you believe me. Go Square Go, could possibly be a contender for my favourite Glasvegas tune.

I'm thinkin this review thing is getting long, so one more tune to discuss :)

Daddy's gone speaks about his dad is his hero, which is sweet. Then it goes on to sing about how hes never there for him and all he wanted was "a kick about the park" which is like taking a football and playing just the 2 of them. He also sings about all the things he wishes he could have done with his dad if only he were there for him. Then the song goes on to chant

"Forget yer Da, he's gone"

multiple times, the lyrics are pretty sad, but the song overall doesnt make me feel sad at all, I don't really know what I feel in all honestly, the desire to hug my dad? Yeah kind of. the desire to dance? No not really. I don't know whats special about this song. But it's got something there.




Just read this over, don't like the review. It's pretty poor, Glasvegas may be generic etc. but I assure you, they don't disapoint.

I haven't been in your journal too much because I'm not a big fan of electronic music outside of weird stuff and trip hop, but I was happy to see Glasvegas in here. I think it's pretty good, I'd probably like it a lot more if I could understand the vocals through the thick Scottish accent (half the time, ****ed if I know what they're saying). And I've never heard anyone sing with an accent like that either. That said, it has some really good songs. I love the parts where the distortion and synth keys kick in on It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry. Go Square Go and Daddy's Gone (which I can almost completely understand) are my two other favorite songs, so good choice with the tracks. Also, I enjoyed reading your review because you're Scottish and actually explained what some of the slang means... I had no clue what Go Square Go meant or where Flowers and Football Tops came from. Though I still don't understand football tops, you cut the tops off of soccer balls and leave them at the grave?

Thick accent :laughing: haha. To me they sing really posh. You would hate to hear me speak then, esp when I'm drunk. No no no, football tops as in a football shirt, I see lot's of team t-shirts tied to fences with some flowers I'd know that there had been an accident and that's where it had happend. I'm glad I helped you understand the slang. This review doesn't really mean anything/much to me. I disliked it but now I'm glad I've helped people understand some of our complicated slang :) It's made me feel better about it, perhaps I even like it now. Anyways, 666th post. I was introduced to Daft Punk by a friend when I was about 9 years old and had no taste in music whatsoever. However I loved this music she was playing (she was older) it made me just want to dance and dance and dance more! It was really indescribable at the time, I never really understood the whole "Music can make you feel good" thing. So I never bought the album, and never pleaded with my Mum to buy me it. That Christmas I randomly got this CD, I recoqnised it instantly (the music that is, not the cd cover) and I never stopped playing it for a good few weeks/a month. I had since forgotten all about it until I was randomly searching MB for a thread, and I seen Daft Punk. I have since been addicted to them again. It brings back wonderful memories for me, most dancing like a bloody idiot to the music. I really hope I never forget about the French duo again, they are amazing.

When I downloaded the album again I instantly remembered the more distinctive of the songs, eg, One More Time, Technologic, Harder Better Faster Stronger, Digital Love last but never least Aerodynamic. Discovery is a really well thought out album, all the songs are very similar, yet so different. It's a real solid album, full of good songs, usually on a n album, you get one or two shit songs, I can't think of one song which is particuarly shit, ofcourse there is better ones on the album, but it can't be excused that the majority of the songs are absolutely amazing. All round great album, thoroughly enjoyed it everytime I've listened. If you like Electronica, and completely new to the genre I suggest this album. It's really worth a listen.

edit: sorry for the poor insight, I couldn't be bothered writing it all out again really. It could have been a decent review if I put a wee bit more heart into it.

I don't think there are a better opening four songs to a record out there and certainly not in electronica. Nightvision has always confused me because I think that it disrupts the flow of the album a little :s Apart from that though this is a truly great album!

I've heard One More Time and Harder Better Faster Stronger enough times to keep me satisfied for a lifetime or two - I was a teen when they were both all over the radio and music TV, plus even these days you're pretty much guaranteed to hear them at least on a night out. Still good tunes though. Daft Punk aren't my personal favourite electronic act by a long shot, from what I remember of them, but your reviews officially nudged me in their direction, so no harm in trying this album out, especially for all the years I've not bothered picking up a copy myself.

See I hadn't heard them at all since when I first had the CD, I hadn't heard of them until I seen a few people discussing them on here. Which brought it back to me, I find it pretty cool there more popular where you stay :) but your guaranteed not to hear them here, well anywhere I go. Thank you, I'm sure you'll find a song that hasn't been sickenly overplayed :). A few on the CD are very unheard of unless you do own the CD. Thank you, and thank you again! :D

I know tons of people will tell you how many other better electronic albums are out there, but I'm with you on this one. It's a solid album, catchy, and stays interesting through the entire listen (at least for me). Of course I’m some what new to the genre myself I suppose. Plus, it's one of the only albums my husband and I can both listen to and enjoy.

So have you heard any of their other albums? Anything you can recommend?

There probably is some better electronic albums but this one as you say is completely solid and pretty interesting. I'm glad you and your husband enjoy it :D unfortunatly I haven't checked out much else from them as I didn't rediscover them until shortly before that review sorry, but I'll probably be sifting through albums and I'll definetly give you a shout on which ones are the best :D
