![]() Nirvana - Sappy It would only be fit to start things off with something pertaining to Nirvana so I chose one of my favorite songs (Meaning-wise) to dissect in a sense. (My favorite version live at the off ramp cafe in Seatle below) ___ And if you save yourself You will make him happy He'll keep you in a jar And you'll think you're happy He'll give you breathing holes Then you'll think you're happy He'll cover you with grass And you'll think you're happy Now You're in a laundry room, You're in a laundry room Conclusion came to you, oh ___ In this part of the song I feel cobain is expressing anger and sorrow towards god. He feels that god gives people to many restrictions thus not giving them much freedom. The analogy is that god keeps us in a jar like lightning bugs or grass hoppers (Just like when we all caught lightning bugs as kids and put them on jars). He then has full control over what you can and cannot do, giving people a false sense of security because in fact god doesn't exist and is just a scapegoat to society, trapping you in his jar and keeping you in a laundry room. The rest of the songs has similar lyrics meaning what I stated above (opinion) At a young age Kurt Cobain became a christian in a youth group at his hometown of aberdeen. Krist (The bassist for those who don't know) also went there as well. Later when Kurt was kicked out of his house the pastor inviting Kurt to stay with him. For about half a year Kurt preached to his friends about how drugs were bad and to take Jesus into their lives. After Kurt lost the key to the house on one snowy night, he broke a window to get in and was kicked out. He then became a Satanist for a good while before turning to agnostic. I don't have much idea what order these came in but he was also at one time an Atheist and showed interest in Buddhism. The song was written in 1988 (before Nirvana was started) entitled "Happy" and was played at shows until 1993 when it was recorded and made a B-side, one of there most popular B-sides at that. My opinion on this song? I totally agree with it and can connect with it. Check out the rest of the lyrics; NIRVANA - SAPPY LYRICS That concludes my first journal entry, except the next one to not be Nirvana ![]() If anyone wants either of those MP3s just let me know.
