Wow, I haven't played guitar in so long and I am really out of practise! I feel bad when I have been neglecting my musical instruments. Anyway, today I picked up my guitar to have a jam for the first time in months, and decided to record some random snippets...

I don't mean to tease you so much but you are so behind the curve on the collaboration thing between musicians. The whole Youtube explosion is around the time when that sort of activity began to become more popular. The only limitations would have to be if you are living in completely different timezones and even then you can still send each other your parts and have one or the other mix them while the other is sleeping and/or busy.

I don't think timezone is the only limitation. So far, I've encountered many other limitations, sound quality being one of them. If you're chatting on Skype and jamming together on Skype, there is only so much that the other person can hear, even if you're using a top quality microphone, it's difficult to show certain things or musical techniques without either a) being there in real life and hearing it in good quality or b) going to the effort of creating a good recording of your sample so that the other person can hear it in good quality, which you can't really do in real time. I've also found that delay when Skyping or video chatting can be an issue if you're trying to play along to something together. And for me, timezones mean that everything takes forever. When playing with other musicians in real life, we could get a song polished in a day. For me, it has taken months to even get to something that is pretty half-arsed, after all the emailing back and forth and recording and re-recording, etc. Even when people collab online, they will still come together in real life and real time if they want to make a quality recording of it... |

Gig review - Karnivool, 2nd August 2013 I saw Karnivool last night for what I think is the tenth time! The show was at Melbourne Town Hall... Which seemed to me a strange place to have a rock concert, but in the end it was actually a great venue for it. Spacious, seating and general admission areas, great sound quality, and you felt pretty up close and personal with the band. It's a smaller venue but they had two shows which means it wasn't too packed. Here's what it looked like inside at the gig: As always, Karnivool did not disappoint. On the tram on the way to the gig I was feeling a little apathetic, due to the fact that I am not a huge fan of the new album, Asymmetry. Don't get me wrong, it is a great album and I do like it. Karnivool are amazing musicians. However, for me it does not top Themata or Sound Awake. It just doesn't have the same flow, epicness, and there is a lot of fluff that I tend to want to skip through. Anyway, that can be for an album review another day! Like I was saying, I wasn't sure what to expect due to the fact that their new album wasn't doing wonders for me. But the show was just awesome. Their sound was brilliant, they still sound better live than any other band I have seen. Ian Kenny's voice was faultless. And the new stuff actually sounded a lot better live. They played a fair bit from the new album, which I enjoyed to some extent, because of how flawless their live sound is. They also played a large amount of songs from Sound Awake which was great. But my one complaint - they only played ONE SONG from Themata. One song! I was sorely disappointed. Some of some oldschool favourites like COTE, Roquefort and Fade did not make an appearance. In fact, I think that was the first Karnivool gig I have gone to where I have not heard these three songs. They came back for their encore and I had my hopes held high but they played two slower songs from their new album which kinda put the crowd into a lull. So I guess that's my only downside to the evening, and it was pretty disappointing. Having said that though, Karnivool are still one of my favourite bands and are definitely still the best band I have ever seen like. Their live sound is a sonic beast. The setlist was as follows: 1. Asymmetry 2. A.M. War 3. Themata 4. Nachash 5. Simple Boy 6. Goliath 7. We Are 8. All I Know 9. Deadman 10. Amusia 11. The Last Few 12. The Refusal 13. Set Fire to the Hive 14. New Day Encore: 15. Alpha Omega 16. Aeons Last edited by Astronomer; 08-02-2013 at 09:52 PM. |

I really, really, really need to check these boys out. This is probably the 3rd of 4th concert review you've done for them, and the umpteenth time you've mentioned them and I always tell myself I'm going to listen to them and I never do. Shame! It's about that time.

If I stick around I'll ask if I can re-name it. But I don't know if I'll continue writing here anyway regardless, I don't have the time/motivation/can't think of anything good to write about/not many people read it anyway

You have 10,732 views since you started the thread but not many people read it? ummm okay.
Journals have always been like that people read it but just because they don't leave a comment doesn't mean they aren't reading it. Maybe they just don't have anything to add to what you already have written.
