I'm not an extremely huge '80s fan but there are a few songs I really enjoy. I find this song to be one of them. I would hate think how many times I've played this and people argue with me that this is Foreigner. Well, it is not. It is Toto. And Toto has my full respect because of this little number.

Hold The Line was technically released in '79 but it really sets off some of the upcoming beats and rhythm of the eighties. Pretty awesome piano intro. If I ever learned how to play piano this would be my first thing to learn.

Then it goes right into some intense '80s guitar. (I don't know much about guitars but the electric guitars in the '80s had a such a specific sound and they played them in a certain way that you can really tell apart from the other eras, I guess its just like anything though).

Well, this gets the song off to a pretty good start. The song then sinks into the smooth voice of Bobby Kimball. If you don't feel the need to sing along with this song then you are weird. The lyrics aren't the deepest by any means, but all around, its just a really fun song to rock out to.

The second song I'm really feeling today is.......

ARTIST: Danzig
ALBUM: Danzig

This song is gold. Pure and simple. This is hard rock at its finest. Not TOO huge on anything else of Danzig's (even though they are a cool band) but this song is BAD ASS. The Danzig Mother video I will post is even more far out. Probably the best rock video I have ever seen. I would have given anything to be at this concert. I probably would have been eaten alive though, all 100 pounds of me haha.

Guitar = genius. Starts off slow and steady and so does Danzig's vocals then he starts getting a little crazy and so does John Christ (awesome dude) on guitar. Everything gets harder and faster as the song progresses.

I have to pause here for a minute to express to everyone how much I love Danzig's voice. I will not explain it, you can experience it for yourself.

I qualify this to be one of the best head banging songs in history.

Toto recently split up, Steve Lukather said that one of his reasons for the split, was that he was sick and tired of playing "Hold the Line" after 30 years!!!

The piano/keyboards of David Paich were always the magical substance of Toto, as was the voice of Bobby Kimball.

Mother was probably the best thing Danzig did and Glenn Danzig does have a pretty amazing voice, the only vocalist that sounds very similiar to him and who comes straight to mind is Keith Caputo of Life of Agony.

Yeah, Danzig's voice is so powerful and masculine and great. It didn't hurt that he had some major charisma either. You know, I'll have to check Life of Agony out. I'm not familiar with them.

Problem is Steve Lukather always called the shots in that band and quite often got them wrong!!! Hold the Line is off the debut album, for me one of the greatest debut albums of all time and superior to what Journey, Foreigner and Survivor etc were putting out at that time.

I`m no expert on Life of Agony and have only listened to one album of theirs "River Runs Red" best described as a alternative metal/Post grunge affair with thrash elements, its a concept album and quite depressing.

What can I say, The Electric Prunes are something else. "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" has taken the place of "Mami Me Gusto" as most played song in my library. So many weird little exotic knick-knacks of instruments used, and I can't keep track, all I can do is just enjoy how awesome they are. My favorite part of the song is at the beginning when he is singing gently about the girl and her perfume etc, and the violins(?) screech dramatically and the music takes a maddening turn. The title is pretty clever, as are the lyrics of the song, which only makes it that much more of a masterpiece.

Since I am still just beginning to delve further into the psychedelic genre, I would love it if anyone has a suggestion of another song like this one that they would recommend. I have been frequenting TheCellarTapes's thread and psychedelic thread alot but I am overwhelmed on what to try first. So if you guys could narrow it down a little for me based on this band that would help greatly!

The Electric Prunes were great. Listen to the idosyncratic song structures and mind bending electric guitar solos in these two songs by the EPs. Their primary producer was a guy named David Axelrood, an eccentric genius who worked at Capitol Records and also produced jazz artists like Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderly.

In the late sixties Axelrod was held in as high esteem as producers like Phil Spector, George Martin and Brian Wilson. Axlerod finally burned out because of his heroin and cocaine use but he was a true psychonaut who is widely admired by current remix and breaks/beats artists like DJ Shadow, Chris Joss and David Holmes.

thats perfect. Loved the two songs you posted, especially "Get Me To the World on Time". Exactly what I was wanting. You also spurred me to look into Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderly. Do you know of any other psychedelic bands that fall into the same categories as The Electric Prunes that I might like?

SONG: Lightning Crashes
ARTIST: Live
ALBUM: Throwing Copper

Live was a one hit wonder band, but man was their one hit good! The year of this album was 1994 just so you know.

There is something so up close and personal about this song. It sounds as if the lead singer is singing really softly, almost a whisper, right into your ear. A very interesting guitar riff, reminds me of the Velvet Underground's riff in "Pale Blue Eyes". Swaying and gentle, is how I would describe it. Its sounds as if the guitar moves closer to you then further away. As soon as you get comfortable with this soft beat and whispering lyrics, the lead singer gives the song an little burst of life and energy, but surprises me by falling right back into his whisper. But eventually when the lyrics take a more dramatic turn, he permanently heightens the feeling and emotion in his voice. I feel so satisfied when he finally does this, because the suspense has built up enormously throughout the song at this point. And I have to mention the lyrics....not the most conventional lyrics of a grungy type band, which only makes the song stand out that much more.

I do have to admit to this song being a guilty pleasure of mine...well, alot of Live's music is actually. Great job with your mini review there. I have to take exception though to you calling them a one hit wonder...I seem to remember them having quite a few songs that became radio hits besides "Lightning Crashes", such as '"I Alone", "Dolphin's Cry", and "Selling the Drama", just to name a few. My personal favorite song of theirs is "Dance With You", which wasn't a big hit but is simply beautiful. I think if you liked "Lightning Crashes", you may like that one as well.

Good going on your journal by the way. I find myself reading quite a few journals but not commenting much. Keep it up girl!

This is a great song. I'm glad you can post about your love for it without worrying what others will think! Because as far as I've discovered, Live aren't a very admired band. But you're right, Lightening Crashes is a beautiful song, I'm not really familiar with much of their other stuff but I've always really enjoyed this song.

Thank you, kind lass. I'm so glad to see you stoppin in. As for Live being a one hit wonder, probably more of my opinion showing through than actual fact there! haha, So sorry about that. I will most definitely give those songs you mentioned another go, its been ages since I've even listened to them. Including this song, I had my ipod on shuffle this morning and this song came on and it reminded me how much I liked it. Thanks again
