The Under Appreciated Genius Of Weird Bands Who Should Have Been Bigger Than They Were.
No 1 David Devant And His Spirit Wife This band of weirdos started life in Brighton in the early 90s. They took their name from an old English music hall magician who would finish his shows by making his 'spirit wife' appear floating over the stage, they would also use this as inspiration for their live shows. The band became settled with members The Vessel (Also known as Mr Solo) on vocals & guitar, Foz? on guitar & saw, The Colonel on bass, Professor Rimschott on drums and The Genius on sax. Also joining their live shows were projectionist Lantern and their two 'Spectral Roadies' ICEman & Cocky Young'un. In 1996 they were creating a buzz in London and in the music press with their outrageous live shows which involved things like The Vessel (A kind of Victorian era Elvis) floating on a magic carpet and being shot out of a cannon and culminated like their namesake with the Spirit Wife appearing at the end of the show. They were eventually signed and released their first album the following year Work, Lovelife, Miscellaneous. Critics compared them to being like early Bowie & Roxy Music on acid and gave them favourable reviews. The album wasn't a commercial hit and the band plagued with line up changes carried on releasing albums till the mid 2000s before splitting. But they are still fondly remembered by handful of people who were lucky enough to experience them at their short peak. Two singles they released managed to get into the lower reaches of the charts which I have included here for your appreciation. The first is Ginger, a tale of the hardships of having ginger hair. The second single is a charming ditty informing everybody of the delights of the London suburb of Pimlico. Enjoy

A Dreamy Interlude
I am at a small local music festival. I am walking around nursing a nice cold beer on a warm summers day. I spot a notice hanging off a makeshift barrier. I take a closer look at the notice and I read that Kiss will be playing as a part of the festival at a nearby local theatre. I get excited, I've always wanted to see Kiss perform in full make up. I pull the notice off the wall, put it in my pocket and go find somewhere to refill my beer. The following day I arrive at the theatre, there doesn't seem to be much of a queue outside. I walk in and nobody seems to ask me for any money or a ticket. I walk in and take a look around and I wonder what a big internationally known band like Kiss are doing playing in a tiny dump like this. I take a seat a couple of rows from the front and relax. After a couple of minutes I'm beginning to wonder where everybody else is. Then a large old lady comes in and takes a seat next to me pinning me in my seat as she sits down. I look around again and notice that more people are coming in but still barely three rows are full, maybe 60 people at most. The lights begin to fall and we all turn our attention to the stage. The stage appears to look weird, there's the main part of the stage in the middle and there appears to be another stage on top of it tilting at an angle with another two stages to the side. It's difficult to make anything out, we see a few flashes of Kiss shaped silhouettes darting around in the background, is that them? Then we see a huge tongue engulf the stage and we realise what we're watching is actually a intro film, we see the images flash more and more until the begin to pulsate and then suddenly a big explosion and the opening chords to Detroit Rock City ring out...... And it sounds like shit. The small crowd begin to boo as we hear this song being played through a really tiny shitty amp, the boos get louder and louder until it drowns out the music and then finally the playing stops and 'Gene' and 'Paul' sit at the front of the stage. The lights come up and the huge four part stage turns out to be just one stage surrounded by three big mirrors. The crowd continues to boo and 'Paul' apologises. We quieten down to hear Paul's apology. 'Paul' tells us that Kiss have decided to employ local bands to dress up and don the make up and be Kiss so that on any bill, in any town, in any country Kiss would be able play at every gig in the world from now on. The crowd begin to walk out and in the corner of my eye I see 'Gene' and 'Paul' looking sorry for themselves in front of an empty theatre. Then I decide I really need a piss, why are there no toilets in this dump?

URBAN'S REVIEWS FOR PEOPLE WITH A.D.H.D.
This week No. 5625: Burzum - Burzum (1992) Like your neighbours 14 year old kid started a shitty metal band with his friends and is playing in their garage and won't shut up, both in content and production . This is about as dangerous as a midget threatening to hit you in the face with a plastic bottle while you sit in the safely of a Challenger Tank with a 120mm gun pointed at his.No wonder they had to burn churches down and murder each other to get any attention, people probably just laughed at them and called them virgins when they heard this garbage. I own albums by Whitehouse, Nurse With Wound & Throbbing Gristle, you really think this cheese ridden childish shit impresses me? And to think I went into this with an open mind willing to give it a chance. Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. See kids, instincts do prove you right sometimes after all.

I get the feeling that Hugh Laurie has been an established celebrity in England for years now -- mostly due to Black Adder I'm assuming -- but I think it's a shame that he doesn't seem like he's going to have the same staying power in America. He's fantastic, but he was completely unknown here until House, and he's now so associated with that role that it's probably killed his career to an extent on this side of the pond. No idea if he ever did stand-up, but he's got as much an instinct for comedy as he does for actual acting. I hope he manages to find a new role to make his own in America before he becomes another "Where are they now?" dude.
