You didn't ask for them, you certainly don't want them, but here are my comments anyhoo. Remember my "somewhat rigid" musical tastes et voila!

Let's see what the randomiser throws up...

Subway Sect - Ambition (1978)
To be honest this is the only Subway Sect song I can remember, I'm pretty sure I've heard more but I don't remember any of them. At least I had some idea about what this song sounded like before I heard it which must mean it's left an impression somewhere, and it is a good song.
Don't know them.
Quote:
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (2006)
Easily one of the best pop songs of the last 10 years and anyone who disagrees is dead from the inside.
Don't know it. Yeah that's what I said. Is this the Seal song? No? See, I'm not joking: I DON'T know it.
Quote:
The Shangri-Las - Leader Of The Pack (1964)
Band put together by legendary producer Shadow Morton who I bought a compilation of not long ago, the guy was responsible for some really cool stuff. I remember hearing this song when I was about 4 years old, loved it then, still love this song now as did some of my favourite bands, New York Dolls & Redd Kross among them.
Total classic: dig those bike engines revving! Oooh yeah! The Count would love this! (Whaddya mean, you don't watch "Counting cars"???)
Quote:
David Crosby - Laughing (1971)
Boring middle aged man country.
How the hell does David Crosby get on this list 3 times (without even counting The Byrds because I quite like them) and Gram Parsons doesn't get on once?
This is bullshit, let's fix that.
(Alternate choice: The Flying Burritto Brothers - Christine's Song)
No real time for Crosby. Or Still. Or Nah. Possibly Young.

Quote:
Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode (1958)
OK, so Chuck Berry was a one trick pony, but what a great one trick to have.
Another total classic rock staple. Who couldn't love this?

Quote:
Otis Redding - I've Been Loving You Too Long (1965)
I've never really been a fan of slow ballads but if i'm going to listen to one then why not listen to one sung by a man with a voice sweeter than Scarlett Johansson's pussy dipped in honey.
Sweet song, soul-tearing. But I hope/assume/demand "Dock of the bay" is in there too?

Quote:
Candi Staton - Young Hearts Run Free (1976)
Sure, this is probably the kind of song that's probably played in gay bars all the time and the middle section sounds like a naff gameshow theme but there's something great about a well written catchy pop song which is what this is.
Decent song, though I'm not much into 70s disco --- who knew?
Quote:
Mina - E se domani (1964)
Rather dull French ballad, it's all very well sung and everything but it could have easily been recorded 30 years earlier. I'd much rather listen to some more contemporary Chanson Pop. Françoise Hardy is already on this list but France Gall isn't, so her Serge Gainsbourg penned ode to blow jobs gets in.
(Alternate choice: France Gall - Les Sucettes)
Don't know it.
Quote:
Queens of the Stone Age - Feel Good Hit Of The Summer (2000)
I suppose there's a small case for including 'Lost Art Of Keeping a Secret' instead, but fuck that....
Don't know it.
Quote:
The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black (1966)
Do you seriously think I'm not putting this in?
Classic
Quote:
David Bowie - "Heroes" (1977)
Ditto
Classic x 10
Quote:
Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (2005)
OK let's address the elephant in the room.
Praise their newer albums as much as you like, deep down you know they've never written anything as good as this since.
I always liked Tony Wilson's description of them, he once called Alex Turner's vocals as 'A northern accent you could cut glass with'.
Don't know it.
Quote:
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun (1964)
I've heard this song covered by a million artists and none of them are as good as this one is. Maybe because I heard it first, who knows.
Classic x 20
Quote:
Armand Van Helden - U Don't Know Me (1999)
I had no idea what this song sounded like when I saw the title yet as soon as the intro kicked in I remembered the whole song pretty much instantly. I could go around looking for an alternate dance song from that era but why bother when this is so easily recognisable.
In reference to the title, no, I don't!
Quote:
Ali Farka Toure - Amadnrai (1987)
Sorry but I fucking hate world music with a passion. Spending nearly 8 minutes listening to someone from Mali play a generic blues riff and shout in French isn't my idea of fun music. I'll leave this as an open spot to be filled when this is done.
Nobody is ever going to convince me world music is worth listening to, ever. I'm not the slightest bit interested in Mongolian throat warbling or Burkina Faso Grunge or whatever the hell they play there.
Don't know it. Oh by the way Urban, a Mr. Gabriel and a Mr. Simon want to talk to you about your attitude to world music. And FPK....
Quote:
Suede - Animal Nitrate (1992)
The first time I ever heard this song I orgasmed
The second time I ever heard this song I orgasmed
.
.
.
.
.
The fiftieth time I ever heard this song I orgasmed

.
.
.
.
.
.
The thousandth time I ever heard this song I orgasmed
.
.
.
.
.
The mill.... ahh sod it, you get the picture
Don't know it.
Quote:
B]Pata Negra - Camaron (1989)[/B]
This is odd, it's kind of like flamenco music with electric guitar solos sung in Spanish. Can I think of something better to put in than this? Yes I can.
(Alternate choice: Pixies - Isla de Encanta)
Don't know it.
Quote:
The Marcels - Blue Moon (1961)
It's hard to hate this song as it's just so much fun to listen to, and let's be honest there's nothing as fun that you could really replace this with from that time. Rock n Roll was almost dead in the very early 60s & it was just wall to wall crooners in the charts.
One of the few 60s songs I can stand. That isn't prog.

Quote:
New Radicals - You Get What You Give (1998)
I really hated this song when it came out, no doubt because of it being played about 20 times a day on the radio. Hindsight however is a wonderful thing. They did what most good pop acts should do, they released one album and pissed off.
Think of all the awful music that we would be spared had more bands taken the New Radicals lead. For that they get in. And at least they're not Semisonic, Wheatus or Sixpence None The Richer.
God I hope none of them are on this.
Don't know it.
Quote:
Crowded House - Weather With You (1991)
Sorry but I fucking hate this band.
I know without even looking that The Auteurs are never going to be on a list like this so...
(Alternate choice: The Auteurs - How Could I Be Wrong)
Hate this song with a passion
Quote:
Roy Orbison - In Dreams (1963)
Oh come on, Pretty Woman comes out a year later and you go with this?
Really?
(Alternate choice: Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman)
And this one. And that one too.
Quote:
The Band - The Weight (1968)
More of that kind of country inspired Americana that I never really got. That's not to say I dislike that sort of music. I just find it hard to identify with stuff that came out in the 60s & 70s and would much rather listen to something like this only much more recent. In fact I have just the band who I doubt are on this list.
(Alternate choice: Sparklehorse - It's a Wonderful Life)
Great song
Quote:
The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard (1966)
Decent garage rock song but The Electric Prunes are not on this list, neither are The Music Machine who I like much more than The Seeds. Only one real choice here.
(Alternate choice: The Electric Prunes- I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night))
Don't know it.
Quote:
The Who - Substitute (1966)
There are 4 songs by The Who and this song is the most disposable so this goes to make way for a different band who should be on here from around that time.
(Alternate choice: The Creation - Painter Man)
meh it's ok I guess
Quote:
Rod Stewart - Maggie May (1971)
Rod Stewart has to be one of the biggest wastes of talent ever. Once he left The Faces he turned his back on his R&B roots and just sang garbage. Fortunately this was recorded while he was still with them and at least making an effort still.
I like this song, this can stay.
Another classic. Shut up about Rod. Leave him alone...

1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die: 26 - 50

Sol Hoopii's Quartet - Hula Girl (1933)
This is Hawaiian hula music (Obviously) and very much of it's time. as I'm not really any sort of expert on either music from the 30s or hula music I'll leave this in because it is rather fun.

Buddy Holly & The Crickets - That`ll Be The Day (1957)
If you were to come to my parents house you will be told in no uncertain terms that Elvis was a nobody and that Buddy Holly was the real king of Rock n Roll. I grew up with this song ringing in my ears.
This one goes in for my Dad who was an original 1950s Teddy boy.

The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows (1966)
I'll put this is because it's obviously a great song and well ahead of it's time, but the Rolling Stones used the siter much better on Paint it Black, so there.

John Lennon - Working Class Hero (1970)
This is difficult because there are two John Lennon songs on the list and I'm sure you can easily guess the other. If I were to put two John Lennon songs on the list it would be this one and Instant Karma.
So I guess this one stays.

The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So (2000)
I love this song and don't care what anybody thinks. And their bass player was the spitting image of Fat Barry from Eastenders.

Hawkwind - Silver Machine (1972)
Urgh, someone put a shitty live version without Lemmy singing of this up on the torrent rather than the original. You'd think it would be easy to find after all it's only been included on a few thousand rock compilation albums.
No Lemmy = No song.
Screw that, I'm finding the original
AHHHHHHH bliss.

Neil Young - Like a Hurricane (1977)
There are two Neil Young songs on this and neither one of them are Cinnamon Girl or The Needle And The Damage Done. This song isn't bad but at over 8 minutes long it does get a little tedious after a while.
I know it's a classic, it's just not classic enough for my list.
(Alternate Choice: Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl)

Iggy Pop - The Passenger (1977)
It would be pretty difficult to exclude this even though I could probably name at least another 10 Iggy songs I would like to use only Lust For Life would come close but that's also on the list so this stays.

Fanfare Ciocărlia - Iag Bari (1999)
Aparently this is a Romanian gypsy band who's gigs can last up to 30 hours. Thankfully this song is only 4 and a half minutes long. I'll leave this as an open space to be filled at the end.

Blue Oyster Cult - (Dont Fear) The Reaper (1976)
This is a band I've never really paid that much attention to so I have no idea if they have any better songs than this or not. I'm including this on the basis that if I know how well known this song is and know nothing of the band then so do a lot of other people. Last FM backs this up as this song is their most listened to song beating the 2nd placed song by a 4 : 1 ratio.

Yes - Wonderous Stories (1977)
I've never even heard Yes fans talk about this song and hearing it now I now know why, it's fucking awful.
Apparently this was a top 10 hit for the band, Christ knows why. There's no 80s King Crimson on this list so this song gets booted.
(Alternate Choice: King Crimson - Elephant Talk)

Split Enz - I Got You (1980)
Credit where credit is due this is a really catchy song but I can think of 1000 songs just from this era alone which should be on here instead of this.
(Alternate Choice: XTC - Senses Working Overtime)

Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (1994)
Enter the Wu-Tang is an album that has a very special place in my heart as it was the soundtrack to my first ever trip to Amsterdam. This is a nailed in choice.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - I Love Rock 'n Roll (1982)
I'm not going to pretend to be a huge Joan Jett fan, in fact this is the only song I've heard by her. You can't help but like the woman, she's been doing this stuff for something like 40 years already and is still at it. I did find out that Steve Jones & Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols played on the original recording of this from 1979. I want to hear that version now.

The Breeders - Cannonball (1994)
Last Splash was one of my favourite albums of the 90s. It's a miracle the CD still even plays.
It's Kim Deal, what do you want me to do here?

The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon (1985)
A song that I may have liked for an incredibly short amount time when it came out that I just began to resent the more I heard it. I'll replace this with something totally different.
(Alternate Choice: Hanoi Rocks - Don't Ever Leave Me)

Mos Def - Ms. Fat Booty (1999)
I don't remember this as such but it's ringing a bell somewhere in the depths of my brain. Sadly my favourite hip hop tune from 1999 hasn't been included on here so this is going to get bumped off.
(Alternate Choice: Jurassic 5 - Concrete Schoolyard)

The Very Best - Rain Dance (Feat. M.I.A.) (2009)
Any hope of me ever liking this song evaporated the moment M.I.A. showed up. Surely I can find something better than this from around this time. I'll add this at the end

Jane's Addiction - Three Days (1989)
It's hard to imagine just how much Jane's Addiction blew my mind when I first saw them sometime around 87/88, much more than Nirvana ever did. Those first 3 albums they made before they originally broke up the first time may have come from space they were so different. Three days is the jewel in the crown of the Ritual de lo Habitual album. I'll ignore what they became and just enjoy this 10 minutes of bliss.

Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy (1991)
The problem I find with a lot of dance music is that I find it dates really badly. Recently I was listening to some beat beat stuff from 10 to 15 years ago and was struck by just how old hat it sounded. This song came out almost 23 years ago to the day and was so way ahead of it's time it still sounds as fresh as a daisy today.

Big Joe Turner - Shake, Rattle & Roll (1954)

Hmmm, do I go with the original or do I go by the cover recorded by a fat middle aged bloke with bad quiff.
I think i'll stick with this.

John Denver - Rocky Mountain High (1972)
During the whole mid 80s censorship in music thing, along with some of the people speaking out over the issue with Frank Zappa, Dee Snider & Jello Biafra was John Denver. I guess out of all those people Denver would be the person with the most to lose having the more conservative fan base. In fact Jello Biafra says in one of his spoken word albums that Denver lost his record deal for speaking out. Just for that I have to include the man.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (2007)
I'm pretty sure that there are several thousand remixes of this song. In fact I'd be very surprised if one person has heard the same version more than once. Gets in due to sheer volume.

Tom Waits - (Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night (1974)
I don't really like this very much, he sounds too normal. If I want to listen to a Tom Waits song I want him sounding like a drunk bullfrog. As a song though it's ok and I can't really think of anything to replace it.

The Temptations - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone (1972)
I was just thinking that clocking it at just under 7 minutes this was rather long for a single, only to discover the album version is 12 minutes long. I was considering putting in the original version of this song by The Undisputed Truth in but I think the 12 minute version should get the nod instead.

So we're now up to 47 songs on the list and 3 free spots.

No, not really... I think they are ranked Chronologically, so there isn't a build up to the best song imaginable. I saw another list somewhere where it was broken in decades, it would be neat if it was broken down by genre and sub-genre, or even by country. It's a mix bag of songs, some artist are represent a couple of times, some artist not at all. The list has Fugazi but not Paramore. Dusty Springfeild is represented three times but it doesn't have Gordon Lightfoot or Allman Brothers Band, which proves it very UK-centric leaving out staple artists from Canada and US. And he totally dis's Australia the list doesn't have Three Dog Night or Men at Work, two AC/DC big whoop. Ironically the title Blue Monday is on twice, first by the Fats Domino and another entirely different song by New Order.

I just downloaded this based on the fact it's the worst cover of a modern pop album I have ever seen.
Review to come later.

See, I told you.
The fat bloke in the baseball jacket looks even more punchable than that Korean cunt we had to endure a while back and every time I see that woman singing I can't help think that they're a woman short behind the perfume counter at Boots.

Seriously Urban? You passed up Eniac Requiem? That album cover is like puke and snot all exploding together on an album cover. You had to go all the way to a current album from me before finding something you could use? Or did you just stick a pin in it?

I'll take Willowglass over your new favourites Santamaria any time!
