You like music? Hey me too!
Ok new idea, I'm going to use this to review albums that are good, but people cast them off without even listening to them for one reason or another.
For Starters: Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend Fall Out Boy Face it Fall Out Boy aren't that good, and It's fine if you don't like them because they're not good, but what pisses me off is when people cast this album because, well, it's by Fall Out Boy This album really shows what FOB was capable of. The lyrics are amazing, and Stump's voice is actually tolerable. I love the allusions to pop culture throughout the entire album, especially in Pretty In Punk, and Moving Pictures. Another constant in the album is the playing skills. The guitars are amazing, the drums aren't nearly as bad as they are in albums with Hurley playing them, and whether you like it or not, ete Wentz is an amazing bass player. Over great album 7.5/10 Best Tracks: Calm Before The Storm Growing Up If You Like Check Out: Take This To Your Grave-Fall Out Boy Baseball-Say Anything Track Review: 1."Honorable Mention" – 8/10 2."Calm Before the Storm" * - 10/10 3."Switchblades and Infidelity" – 8/10 4."Pretty in Punk" – 7/10 5."Growing Up" – 9/10 6."The World's Not Waiting (For Five Tired Boys in a Broken Down Van)" – 6/10 7."Short, Fast and Loud" – 5/10 8."Moving Pictures" – 7/10 9."Parker Lewis Can't Lose (But I'm Gonna Give It My Best Shot)" – 6/10 |
Your Favorite Weapon Brand New Ahh if I had a quarter for everytime I've been told "It's just poppy Kill Your Girlfriend Music" It is, but does that automatically make it bad? NO SIR. Brand New are an amzing band, but only get recognized for The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, because it has "emotion". Well YFW is full of emotion as well, and even though it's more "juvenile" then their other albums, it's still amazing. The Alfred Hitch**** refrences mixed in with Evan Lacey;s biting lyricism are a deadly combination, as you can see in tracks like Jude Law and a Semeseter Abroad, and Magazines. The Cue help out as well Logan to the Government Center, using "Close To Me" was a great idea for Brnd New. There are no misses on this album, and ending with Socco Amaretto Lime perfectly closes out the album wrapping up everything they've been trying to say since the album started One of my all time favorite albums: 9/10 Best Tracks: Socco Amaretto Lime Jude Law and a Semester Abroad If You Like Check Out: S/T-Straylight Run Trainwreck-Boys Night Out Track Score: 1 The Shower Scene 8/10 2 Jude Law and a Semester Abroad 10/10 3 Sudden Death in Carolina 9/10 4 Mix Tape 8/10 5 Failure by Design 9/10 6 Last Chance to Lose Your Keys 9/10 7 Logan to Government Center 8/10 8 The No Seatbelt Song 7/10 9 Seventy Times 7 9/10 10 Secondary 8/10 11 Magazines 9.5/10 12 Soco Amaretto Lime 10/10 |
Your Favorite Weapon is actually my favorite album from Brand New. The first songs I ever heard from Brand New were Mix Tape and Failure by Design and I'd have to agree the Jude Law and a Semester Abroad is the best track.
I think it's just as deep as The Devil and God are Raging inside me, just in a different context. The bluntness and honesty in their lyricism is the most prevalent in this album. Good review mate. :) |
If you can give a Fall Out Boy song a 10/10, I'm definitely going to give that album a try.

Thanks guys.
I definatley reccomend both of these albums for anyone who wants to get into pop-rock. |

Okay I'm reviving this thread. I download ~10 albums a week, and I'd like to start reviewing some of them, as some of them are good enough to make it on my unfinished and outdated Top 100. I know I'm not the best reviewer, but I think a thread like this would be a great place to hone my skills. I'll try to update this a couple time a week. Keep in mind I'll be reviewing all the albums on the week I downloaded them. I will be taking reccomendations. I'm going to start with a couple albums from last week to get this going.

Good reviews. I can only talk for myself, but I'm sure lots of people give albums like this judgement without even listening to it. For instance, my girlfriend thinks The Killers new Day And Age album has a message in it about how Brandon Flowers is feeling pushed into making a certain type of music and points our it has references to pop-culture as well. I can't say I agree/disagree because I haven't even given it a chance. I've never listened to a Fall Out Boy album because I always viewed them as sort of bull****... but that's just me being arrogant and judgemental. Maybe a lot of mainstream bubblegum pop music is coming out, but we can't have intense musical movements every generation. I think, like all music, it just shows where a section of society is today and that's perfectly fine- not everything has to be great to be legit. A lot of punk music nearly as complicated as the music before it, so why does what's on TV today have to be? I'm sure there is a good deal of actual talent in all of these bands and am glad to see somebody is reviewing them, I'll be paying attention to this.

Goodness. Finally music I know.
The reviews could be a little longer, though, love. |
MY JUNE TOP 10 10.Take To The Skies(2007)-Enter Shikari-BAccording to iTunes, I've added 691 songs to my library this month. That's a lot. Here's The 10 best albums I heard for the first time this month: 9.Life In Cartoon Motion(2007)-Mika-B+ 8.Ignoto(2005)-Yourecodenameis:milo-B+ 7.Pink(2005)-Boris-B+ 6.Jet Set Radio Future(2003)-Compilation-A- 5.Manners(2009)-Passion Pit http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sUtyx4_Y8P...sion+pit+2.bmp Thanks to adidasss, I received this great electronicy album. It's that kind of indie pop dance music that's becoming so popular, but they have a very distinct sound, comparable to bands like Starf*cker and MGMT. The album starts off very strong. With two of the three top songs on the album, being the first two. It then veers off in a slightly more melodic direction with tracks like The Reeling and To Kingdom Come, which didn't really impress me much, especially the former. The album then take's another turn the more serious-toned Folds In Your Hands, which really showcases how vulnerable this group's sound can really be, and is lyrically one of the best songs on the album. It then precedes to pick back up in the dance pop that I expected the whole album to be. I definitely underestimated the sensitivity of the album, and expected just great indie pop. It fulfills, and completely surpasses that expectation. Thanks adidass. Top Tracks:Little Secrets, Folds In Your Hands, Sleepyhead Overall grade:A- |
#4.Hail To the Theif(2003)-Radiohead
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IpRPhAo-8y...he.thief_2.jpg A few months ago, I was an avid radiohater. I then found The Bends and fell in love with the cliche alternative sound of it. As my taste in music improved, as it has greatly the last three months, I discovered the addicting, almost unclassifiable sound of Ok Computer. They were the only Radiohead albums that i liked, but earlier this week i was willing to complete their discography by downloading Hail To The Theif, a great decision on my part. It sounds completly diferent from The Bends, and OKC, but it has it's own unique and very impressive sound. The album starts of with 2+2=5, a song I'd heard much about before getting the album. It is definatley remiscent of their earlier work, as it starts off with Thom's slow, sootihng voice I've come to love, then fades into a blaring mixture of energy, a very solid track. The album continues to take a unigue path with the next tracks Sit Down, Stand Up and Sail To The moon, the latter being almost aballad of sorts. Then we come to one of my favorite songs on the album, Backdrifts. It sounds very electronic, like some of the slower songs on the previous album I reviewed. It is also lyrically one of my favorites, starting off the track with the biting verse: We're rotten fruit We're damaged goods What the hell we've got nothing more to lose One gust and we will probably crumble Then we get to songs that are very Bends-ish, which I found to be a suprise after hearing the first four songs on the album. Especially the song Go To Sleep, which to me sounds like a very unique take on folk music. The second half of the album starts out with anothe runexcpected turn with The Gloaming. I feel i could give this album a much higher rating if it wasn;t for this one track. It's borderline unlistenable, because it's just noise for the most part, and not in a good way. The lyrics are also sub-par for a Radiohead song. Thankfully, the album returns to the previous styles of the album throughout the last few tracks. The one exception is my favorite song on the album Myxomatosis. Humourous lyrics, with a very serious undertone, coupled with soem of the best percussion work Radiohead has ever done, makes it so listenable. It would be one of the first tracks I would tell someone trying to get into Radiohead to listen to. This album is very underrated by Radiohead fans, and I can understand that, as it does sound very mainstream at points, and we all know how Radiohead fans are ;) Top Tracks:Backdrifts, Where I End and You Begin, Myxamatosis Overall Grade:A- |

Genie let out of the bottle It is now the witching hour Genie let out of the bottle It is now the witching hour Murderers, you’re murderers We are not the same as you Genie let out of the bottle Funny how, funny how When the walls bend, when the walls bend With your breathing, with your breathing When the walls bend, when the walls bend With your breathing, with your breathing With your breathing They will suck you down to the other side To the shadows blue and red, shadows blue and red Your alarm bells, your alarm bells Shadows blue and red, shadows blue and red Your alarm bells, your alarm bells That's quintessential Thom Yorke writing right there. Not straightforward, a wee bit pretentious, and a little creepy. It has the styling of a lot of my favorite Radiohead songs actually. Seeing it live is what got me hooked, so try this out cause this is the version I saw: Skip to it at about 5:25 though, cause it's stuck together with Weird Fishes at the beginning. |
Sorry for forgetting about this my many avid readers(HA!)
#3.III(2009)-Maylene & The Sons of Disaster http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61VG9LYzAvL.jpg A long, long time ago my buddy Alfred sent me the ablum, II by Maylene, and I was really into it, because it sounded like one of my favorite bands at the time Every Time I Die. When I downloaded this album, I wasn'y sure whether I'd like it or not, because in the time between I had strayed away from band slike Every Time I Die. I was pleasently suprised to find they MAylene had strayed away from that sound. It is depending on the song, a lot heavier and lighter then most bands that can be classified "southern metal", and I was blow naway by the lyrical content when compared to other band sof the genre. The album starts out with angry yelley, guitar heavy Waiting On My Deathbed, reminescent of their previous work, but much more complex. This album like heaven for fans of guitar hooks, and there's not better example then the opening track, and the third track, and my personal favorite, Just A shock. Which also features one of the only well-done breakdowns I've heard...ever. The album isn't all a great example of when metalcore can be good, it also has it's lighter, more sensitive parts. Example: Listen Close, something I wasn't excpectig at all from this band. Their last album had Tale of The Runaways, but this is no ballad. Not only does it have one of my favorite opening riffs that they've ever done, but also by far the best bass line of any of their songs. I would go as far to even consider the track 'alt-country', and while it's not lyrically one of the best tracks on the album as a whole, it does contain everything else I was wanting more of after hearing II. We then reach The Old Iron Hills, a nostalgic track with a chorus that will definatley make you sing along. As the album comes to a close, the biggest suprise of all unfolded. The track Oh Lonely Grave. The intro is pretty much their best attempt at the sensitivity that they tried to convey in Tale of The Runaways. But then it breaks into the heaviest minute on the entire album. It then switches up again, and becomes an almost orchestral ballad. Definatley one of the best songs on the album. Overall, I was blown away by the changes that took place between II and III, and this is a mus tlisten for anyone wanting to try something new. Top Tracks: All of them Overall Grade: A- |
