I think it's more a metaphor for someone's survival instincts compelling them to get rid of the shrieking Eraserhead monster that is making their life hell, rather than a literal tale of straight up bat**** insanity or supernatural forces. Most parents feel it, and will slip and do something stupid and selfish to their kids, subconciously trying to "get back at them". But over time, most families come to an unspoken agreement to just bury that ****, lock all those bad memories away in the basement so everything can go back to being "alright".

There's a wolf in sheepskin in The Babadook.

Not sure if this qualifies as a horror flick. Kinda in a grey area I suppose. Falls somewhere between Clean, Shaven and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
