Personal Video Game Top Lists
You can go as high or as low as you want
I think this would be a fun little thread that like 4 people might respond to. It's also a fun excuse to take a deep dive down memory lane for all of us, moreso than Ki's project will. No offense to his project, but this is a better opportunity for people with more niche taste to get their favorite games out there on the chance that others have played them. I'll try and list my top 50 games, but obviously under the disclaimer that this is really difficult and could change all the time. I will also use multiple games in the same series. Changing that rule would change a lot. Also these will all generally be single player games, otherwise stuff like League of Legends or Hearthstone would probably make the list somewhere. One will likely notice that my two favorite genres tend to be RPGs and Platformers. Also I have several #basicbitch selections and you're just gonna have to deal with it. 1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Donkey Kong Country 2 3. Banjo Kazooie 4. Batman: Arkham City 5. Kingdom Hearts 2 6. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island 7. The Last of Us 8. Nier: Automata 9. Persona 5 10. Tales of Symphonia 11. Portal 2 12. Paper Mario 13. Donkey Kong Country 14. Chrono Trigger 15. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 16. Mass Effect 2 17. God of War (2018) 18. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch 19. Baldur's Gate 2: Shadow of Amn 20. Resident Evil 4 21. Tales of Berseria 22. Batman: Arkham Asylum 23. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door 24. Final Fantasy XII 25. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze 26. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon 27. Banjo Tooie 28. Donkey Kong Country 3 29. Super Metroid 30. Dragon Quest VIII 31. Super Castlevania IV 32. Radiata Stories 33. Tales of Xillia 34. Fallout: New Vegas 35. Hollow Knight 36. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations 37. Donkey Kong 64 38. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies 39. Guitar Hero 3 40. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 41. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker 42. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 43. Final Fantasy VII 44. Super Mario Odyssey 45. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 46. Rayman Legends 47. Inside 48. Crackdown 49. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All 50. Xenoblade Chronicles X Damn that was really hard |
This is gonna be based around what I'm more interested in these days. I don't play games much anymore, so I think some of the old favorites would go off the list if I played them again. Trying to keep this more to my current preferences, this is my attempt at a list:
1. Azure Dreams 2. Armored Core V 3. Makai Kingdom 4. Shinobido: Way of the Ninja (the four top games are all tied, to be honest) 5. King of Fighters Neowave 6. Cleopatra Fortune 7. Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution 8. G-Darius 9. Strikey Sisters 10. Samurai Warriors 2 11. King's Bounty: The Legend 12. Tenchu: Fatal Shadows 13. Samurai Aces 14. Final Doom 15. Dungeon Master II 16. Disgaea 2 17. Soul Calibur II 18. Raiden III 19. Bishi Bashi Special (best party game ever. this is a fact.) 20. Deathsmiles 21. Realms of Arkania III: Shadows Over Riva (super nerdy PC RPG, but it's great if you have the patience for it. Making your 6 character team alone takes a couple hours.) 22. Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat 23. Dynasty Warriors 4 and Samurai Warriors 1 tied. 24. another Tenchu game or some more shoot 'em ups or fighting games. I could make a top 30 of just fighters... 25. ...and some more Armored Core games, because why the hell not. A big nostalgia pick would be System Shock for DOS, but I don't care to really play it anymore. |

Rayman in general has always been that series for me that’s undeniably good but I’d rather be playing Donkey Kong or Mario pretty much every time |
Here’s my top twenty in no particular order:
Mega Man 2 Super Mario 2 Super Mario 3 Super Mario Galaxy Bully Okami Tempest Metroid Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Bionic Commando Yars’ Revenge Joust Cosmic Ark Time Pilot Life Force Kid Chameleon Metal Gear Rampage Myst Golden Axe |

That almost made my list as well.

It was my favorite Zelda for a long time. Until...well, a quick gander at my #1 says a lot
Anyone that’s into graphic novel-type games should certainly try the Ace Attorney franchise, which packs 3 in my top 50 and could have maybe even had a few more. Very easy to check out the entire first trilogy with a DS emulator. They are truly wonderful, lots of twists and turns and fun deduction gameplay |

Just throwing this out there that I'm down to do a sort of collab thing where if people want to, we can include some of these games into the classics threads. It doesn't have to work that way, I just thought it'd be cool to sort of combine them in the rare occasion. I know we've done a lot. It's just an idea. I like this idea too.

Never played Okami but with the recent Switch remaster I have no excuse anymore. Definitely plan on picking it up sometime

Damn Jade Empire, now that's a game I haven't thought about in like a decade+. I don't remember much about it except that there were some RPG elements maybe? Kinda wanna look into that game again, I remember liking it
|
Jade Empire is great. I also love that Ninetales shares a love with JSRF with myself.

^it's so so good! The fact that you could grind endlessly and not fall was so smart because that's one less thing you have to focus on. And the story overall was fantastic. I could gush over JSRF any day.
|
It's hard, but I definitely love older PC games, point and click adventures were among my favorite (Love almost anything Sierra, and Lucas Arts).
My top top though would be the Quest for Glory series. 1. Quest for Glory. http://images-1.gog.com/f1ac35d8da27...enshot_600.jpg |

Original Tomb Raider or reboot?
|
Quote:
I like most of the Tomb Raider games, except Tomb Raider: Chronicles and Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness. |
I've never played much of the early games and they're kind of hard to go back to in 2020, but the 360 games are fantastic (Legends and Anniversary, haven't played Underworld yet). And I majorly love the reboot. Still need to pick Rise of the Tomb Raider back up.

TBH I think the original Tomb Raider might be one of the most influential games of all time considering how it pulled back on pure game mechanics to deliver multiple mechanics to create a game that was a sort of jack-of-all-trades in a way that so many modern games are to some extent even if they share little in common gameplay-wise. Possibly the missing link between old school and modern gaming.

Really sad that Bungie couldn't make more Oni games. Not sure if it was because of the acquisition by Microsoft or maybe the sales of the game were not high enough.
|
Ever played Uncharted GreyZone? Definitely a modern series that’s excellent and obviously heavy inspiration from Tomb Raider
|
Quote:
Yes I would like to play Uncharted, I have heard good things about it. But unfortunately I don't have a Playstation, I only have a PC and an Xbox 360. |
Anyone ever play I-Ninja?
|
Back on the Gamecube, yeah. Super fun.

Awww, Super Mario Sunshine was such an adorable game. And also really hard for some reason. I never could beat all of those crazy challenge stages.
|
Original Xbox with Toe Jam and Earl was another one we'd play. Then I got Amped and some cheat codes and you were able to use your own tunes. That rocked. I think the last new-at-the-time video game I played was Max Pain. It's been nothing but Destructo-Truck on-line since.
Half-Life was another one that sucked hours of life from me. I think I got one of the expansion packs for that too. Really though I've had just about every gaming console from Pong on up to Xbox One, but the one's after the early 90's were for my kid. I just don't have the time to play these days, but I do miss a good cut scene and the satisfaction of repeating a level dozens of times and finally getting through it. |
