Half the time, when Nintendo has a successful formula, they'll just regurgitate it over and over (2D Mario, Pokemon, etc.) to the point of tedium. The other half of the time, they'll take a successful formula, strip out everything that made it fun, and be content with it sucking an unquantifiable amount of ass (Paper Mario, Mario Party, etc.).

personally, i never saw the appeal of Super Mario RPG.

though, this might be because it never received a Super Nintendo release over here in the UK.

we didn't get it until the Wii's Virtual Console.

same goes for Chrono Trigger. no idea why America raves about how amazing it supposedly is.
