Best comedy specials on Netflix
Alright, there's so many of them and I don't wanna go through all of them, what are your favorites.
Mine are: Sarah Silverman - A speck of dust (she's still got it). John Mulaney - The comeback kid (not every joke lands but it's a pretty tight set). Jim Gaffigan - Cinco (great impressions) Ali Wong - Baby cobra (it's kind of easy laughs but it gets you there) Amy Schumer - The leather special Special mention to Aparna Nancherla in Ep. 6 of Season 2 of The Standups. That was a hilarious presentation she did at the end there. Also Iliza Shlesinger - Elder Millenial (she does fantastic impressions, even if her topics and insight are a little on the lame/predictable side). Worst five: Hasan Minhaj - Homecoming king (good jokes, worst delivery ever) Chris Rock - Tamborine (boy, middle age is just not treating him well) Maria Bamford - Old baby (she's weird, that's the schtick. I didn't get it) Jerry Seinfeld - Jerry before Seinfeld (something like Rock, over the hill, dad jokes) W. Kamau Bell - Private School Negro (just not funny). Also, especially disappointed with Dave Chappelle, just ruined his reputation and comedy with all the trans hatin'. And he's such a funny man normally...what was the need...? :/ |
I was trying to take your selections seriously until you put Amy Schumer on your list. Perhaps the least funny comedian I've ever seen.
Some of my faves would be: Jim Jefferies: I could care less what people think of it, his comedy is funny. Steve Martin & Martin Short: The special they did was awesome. Both of them together doing **** all. it's great. Neal Brennan: His 3 mic special is really funny. Funny dude too. Right off the top of my head, those are the three I can think of right now. |
i actually watched it in it's entirety when it came out and can confirm it's just as bad as you'd expect

Yeah but if you like Amy Schumer then you're as objectively unfunny as you are objectively tasteless if you're a Nickelback fan.
Check this and ascend to the level of an actual human being. https://www.netflix.com/title/70279935 |
Oh I think I saw a clip of his recently, with a cigarette and alcohol. He looks like he'll die of a heart attack very soon. I'll give it a try. :)
|
He's been about to die for years and is proud of it. I'm sure if he does his funeral will be televised with an open bar roast and it'll be the best two hours of the decade.
|
And now of course I'm watching it and Doug Stanhope telling me that my drinking isn't a problem but a solution makes me feel like I can take on the world but **** taking on the world cause the world sucks.
|
Doug's bit on drunk internet buying sprees is hitting way way way too far home considering I got a package today and I'm still waiting with baited breath for the next one in a few days and I'm pretty sure out of the last ten orders I might have been sober for two of them. **** the internet, **** debit cards, and **** the morning after. The worst part is that I just checked to make sure I only had the one order pending and I was legitimately surprised that it was only one. I could swear I had two.
Edit: Holy **** it is two. The other one is an omnibus for the Phoenix Saga from X-Men that I ordered from a comic book site. When the **** is that coming cause that was my most shameful drunk buy at $60 but it was so reduced that I had no choice but to pull the trigger and I felt awful directly after but there's no chance for a refund so... HELL THE **** YEAH YO, THAT COMIC IS AWESOME!!! |
I like Chris Delia, he has a few specials on Netflix, I like his sense of humor and delivery, also Its funny when he goofs on himself for looking like Bob Saget.

You know it's bad when even the Chapelle specials are pretty unfunny.
Stanhope the GOAT. |

I mean really what’s the difference between a podcast and standup? Both are just a person or persons talking. As standup comedy I guess Homecoming King isn’t the best but as an entertainment show I thought it was excellent. So whatever semantics you wanna use I guess
|
Well the difference I guess would be that a standup show is filled with jokes, that have a set up and a punchline, a podcast can just be banter which doesn't have to get a laugh every 30 seconds. I guess some comedians are now blurring the lines a little bit, like Hannah Gadsby's Nanette (which got a LOT of buzz over the past month or so and I have to say, it was quite an experience but not necessarily something I'd recommend to everyone). But the problem for me with Minhaj was that his whole setup was as a classic one, not someone trying to upend the idea of standup like Gadsby, and yet his punch lines just didn't really hit hard and a lot of the times fell flat, because he told them wrong. A better skilled comedian probably would have done a lot better with the material.
But anyway, to each their own...;) |
Forgot to mention that I love pretty much everything Marc Maron has done. Including his podcast / show. His standup is on another level tho. And yeah, I do agree that those can be seen as the same thing.
|
OMG, I just saw an AMAZING standup, Mike Birbiglia - My girlfriend's boyfriend. Has it all, great storytelling, great jokes! If you google best netflix standup he shows up on a few lists and definitely deserved!
|
Too bad that the only Stanhope that Netflix has is one of his weakest specials. Still good but he's done so much better.
|
Doug Stanhope is like the walking archetype of a washed up alcoholic comedian who isn't that funny anymore, just sad.
Iliza Shlesinger's stuff is funny and relatable, at least for myself. After Elder Millennial I went back and watched the rest of her bits. |

Stanhope >>> everyone else
|
Stanhope can't be touched! Louis C.K. is probably next on my list behind him. I miss Greg Giraldo and Mitch Hedberg.
Anthony Jeselnik is also pretty funny. |
Has anyone else here ever tried doing stand-up comedy?

I mirror dread's comments about Stanhope, he seems like a walking cliche but I'm gonna try and move beyond that and watch some of his specials, if available. |
Oh please, Louis C.K.'s still funny. I think he'll be able to bounce back tbh.
|
Well, never say never, Mel Gibson came back and everyone thought he was a gonner. But he wasn't a comedian. A little difficult to laugh at real life pervs :/
|
What a prude .
It's actually pretty easy to do it when they're really really funny and I trust Louis C.K. to be able to accomplish that given his past work. He's clearly a very self-aware person (well...99% of the time) and that lens of how people might interpret what he says in the light of his scandal might filter out some material that would have been hysterical in another light. I'd also be a bit surprised if his "comeback" special didn't have a big part of a brutally honest confessional/apology on the scandal too. A real case of wait and see, the backlash might come down hard when the comeback attempt happens. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a bit of grassroots campaigning so to speak to lead up to something like a comedy special. |
From what I've read, Louis C.K. was in a car and asked a female if it was okay if he masturbated in front of her. She agreed, and he did his business.
|
Yeah, lumping him in with rapists and such is retarded.
|
^^ Any of you peeps women?
|
Are you?
I've discussed this with several women though. |
Quote:
I do hope he comes back and is able to convey that he has learned his lesson to everybody. I can definitely foresee a special featuring a heartfelt apology sequence like Frownland mentioned |
It's pretty inappropriate but equating it to rape or sexual abuse questions the general legitimacy of consent itself which does the opposite of empowering women to clearly say no to creeps.
|
Sorry, but I can't really watch anything Louis C.K. is in after everything that went on with him during the allegations etc. Same goes for any of the other actors and comedians that have been found guilty of this kind of thing.
There's also no excuse for it so I apologize if my view doesn't change. Whether it's rape, sexual abuse, or something else, it all falls under that same category. Though I'm also biased because I've never found Louis C.K. all that funny to begin with. |
Thank god I'm an amoral bastard or else I'd miss out on a lot of dope ****.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/09/a...isconduct.html A little refresher course. None of the women who came out with these accusations found his behavior acceptable. All were quite upset about it. None felt comfortable speaking out about it until much later. This is wrong and sad. |
Nobody's supporting his creepy wanking.
