Blue? **** off it's Gary.

And the best grind is before Brock. If you torture yourself and get your Pokemon all to level 20 then god damn it the rest of the game basically plays itself if you level properly.

I contemplated calling him Gary but my nerd card was on the line and I didn't want to disappoint you, master.

Nah **** that it's Gary. Who names their kid Blue? And you missed my edit...

I always sort of felt that the grind before Brock was never as important so maybe that's why I always struggled. Though nothing is worse than trying to figure out what pokemon to use in Pokemon Yellow when you have to fight Brock and you start with a Pikachu whos only move is thundershock. I usually went with a weedle so I can poison.

Did they have Mankey early before Brock? I know it wasn't in Red and Blue but I don't remember if it was in Yellow. And if not then use Nidoran♂. It has Double Kick which is a fighting move which is strong against rock Pokemon. Or raise Caterpie to Butterfree so you can have Confusion. Psychic attacks are the great equalizer.

But that first grind is the most important. Not only does it prepare you for Brock but it sets the tone for how you'll play for the rest of the game, and if you're lazy with leveling at the beginning you'll be lazy for the rest of the game.

I think if I remember correctly you could get either a Weedle or Caterpie. Can't remember if Nidoran was there but it may have been. I just always used Kakuna when he learned Harden and mixed with Poison Sting, Brock goes down pretty easily. I did love having a Beedrill on my team for the first part of the game.

Now, in Gold version, my first playthrough consisted of Ampharos, and man, that is one strong electric type.

I think my first team was Venusaur, Dragonite, Alakazam (found a random person with a link cable), Raichu, Arcanine, and Gyarados, and that was the only team I ever went to level 100 with cause afterward I just wanted to restart constantly cause restarting Pokemon is one of life's great joys. And eventually after playing so many games I levitated to Pokemon with the highest stats and now that Fire Red team is my most nostalgic. I just wish I had two GBA's so I could get Alakazam and Scizzor. Scyther is great but definitely the weakest link in my team. Its just so ****ing cool though. Easily the coolest Pokemon of all-time.

Also Gyarados is the most overrated Pokemon ever. Yeah it's beast but it's a water type (a special attack-based type) with mediocre special attack but high regular attack even though it doesn't even have particularly good attack moves. That is stupid.
In later generations they fixed the stupidity of all moves of one type being physical or special, which helped make Gyarados vastly better since Dragon Dance+Waterfall+Earthquake+Filler is a nasty sweeper set. Even today with like 800+ Pokemon to choose from Gyarados is a powerful option competitively in the OU tier (basically the standard tier for competitive play, google “Smogon”).

Competitive Pokemon is pretty cool, and we have battle simulators where you can make any perfectly trained team you want which is great because screw training a whole competitive team up to lv 100 with perfect EVs/IVs manually
