For example: I really hate the combat system in the Arkham games. You don't have to agree, but I don't consider it good and no one can tell me I have to change my mind. For some reason, you see the idea that something is objectively good a lot among gamers, but not a lot among people who are interested in other forms of art. It's that nerdy, technical mind that over rationalizes and quantifies everything that's the root of this, I think. |

I think there are certain ways you can be objective about a game in terms of technical achievements and/or whether the developers succeeded in their design goals, something that Mario, Zelda, and Arkham all obviously excel in by any standard.

Yeah that's sort of what I was getting at. In wind Wakers case, I think Ori said it once that the game had the worst word of mouth reputation ever. People thought it'd be a childish Zelda but it actually ended up being great. And there are plenty upon plenty of gamers out there that would agree to that. The game is good and does what it set out to do. The enjoyment factor is all up to personal experience.

In the end, the experience of playing a game will have to be subjective. So "muh objectivity" would never have any place in trying to bash a dissenting voice into silence. That's how arguments that a game is supposedly objectively good are used to stifle conversation. I'm basically not seeing any purpose for even trying to posit something as objectively good when we're in the realm of art/entertainment.
EDIT: I'm not gonna change that second sentence, but holy crap is it poorly worded. Last edited by MicShazam; 08-22-2018 at 02:26 PM. |

Also if I could get some input on this idea it'd be nice: back when I did the Metal Gear Solid polls, I did it as a theme week specifically for MGS. Do you guys prefer me to group series of games together when it comes to polls or should I keep it random and spread out? I like either or. I'm more so asking because we have games like Mass Effect and the like coming up and I didnt know if you guys would prefer a Mass Effect Poll Week or just do it the way ive been doing it.
No pressure on anything. I can do either. Didn't know if you guys would want a mass effect week etc. |

i just wanna know what exactly Mic’s alternative to Arkham’s combat would be. Considering they were making a game where you play as Batman...I think they ****ing KILLED it on all fronts. I can not fathom a way that they could have done it better, especially in the later games where you have all the quickfire gadgets and special combo finishers available to you. It’s just so ****ing smooooth
