Me either, usually. Last year when I watched The Punisher series in it's entirety, it was the first time I've gone through an entire series like that since since Six Feet Under in the early 00's.

.... but, yeah, what could've been a two hour documentary was just stretched out so much. This is the new orthodoxy for documentaries: instead of explaining something concisely with a well-written voice over, we have to sit through hours of tedious witness testimony to advance the story. If you work as a film editor at Netflix, the first thing they do is confiscate your scissors.

Instead I might watch Derry Girls again. This prog is also difficult to understand without subtitles, but is at least well-lit and funny.

The low lighting thing is often good for setting mood, but it also saves the production company a lot of money on makeup and setbuilding.

I always watch everything with subtitles anyway. Can only recommend that.
Didn't have any issues with flashbacks and mixing up persons. As the series continues there aren't that many anyway.
Yeah, it's a bit too dark at times but closing the blinds helps.

Frown, I didn’t know filming everything in the dark is a money saver. It makes things less interesting.

Seems like Game of Thrones popularized it avoid gaffs like water bottles, cups, watches, etc.

Which may be why GOT never captured my attention enough to follow the plot.

I secretly think almost no one understood it, though

I get that it can seem a little unwieldy when they're introducing the families and plot lines that haven't connected yet, but it's definitely not hard to understand.
