I'm guessing Shippuden wouldn't make any sense if I skipped the original series?

that's the thing with anime, there's hella

the main plots are different, but they still go into so much recap of the most important events of the original as they correlate with stuff going down in Shippuden. I dunno, it's definitely mega vast but I think one could pick up on the stuff that you need to know and could most definitely appreciate the whole thing story wise just from Shippuden. Key details and stuff are hella emphasized, but honestly it's just wicked gnar and has all kinds of ultra monumental outrageousness that's pretty unique to the series and in general, and all in all I'd say it can be appreciated without getting into the original.

Actually been enjoying Naruto from the beginning this time. It helps that I'm not in my mid-20s "hate shonen anime" phase. I got real tired of anime in my 20s and was probably looking for a reason to hate Naruto. So maybe I'm in the right frame of mind this time. It's fun at least.

I don't know, man, you might be off base. The pacing is kind of horrendous tbh. The bridge building arc just won't end. Eight ****ing episodes with one fight at the very beginning that was cool, a bunch of mildly interesting training, endless sitting around a house talking about some kid nobody cares about and his dead step-dad nobody cares about either, at least two long flashbacks, and of course you already know that nothing is going to happen for a long while because the two guys who fought at the beginning are recuperating after their fight and are unable to do anything but be in bed or hobble around on crutches.

This show is quickly draining my enthusiasm. One Piece is vastly superior.

Any anime show where they stand still in the middle of fights and talk at length, Dragon Ball style = no thanks.

My rule of thumb. It's so tedious and unrealistic. Kills absolutely all momentum and dramatic weight the fight could have had.

That's why Fist of the North Star is still the greatest Shonen series of all time.

Bad Guy: Yo, watch this, I'm gonna do the secret technique of-

Kenshiro, after pushing one of his pressure points and making his head explode: Next.
