nah, I finished it a couple of days ago and I honestly can't remember most of the characters and I'm not interested in watching it again (unlike GoT which I saw a couple of times in it's entirety).

I feel like it"s "good" in the sense that you aren't bored while watching it, but that it's "bad" in the sense that it's nothing special and you'll forget it ever existed when time passes.

I was too stoned in 1983 to care about any of this and completely forgot about it until this morning:

Cooped up in snowy Buffalo for the ice storm. Reports are coming in saying there are widespread power outages but so far I still have heat and power.

I spent the day taking in the Fawlty Towers series (1975-1979) for the very first time off my server. The show was ranked first on a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes by the British Film Institute in 2000 and, in 2019, it was named the greatest ever British TV sitcom by a panel of comedy experts compiled by the Radio Times.

I've generally abstained from screening the last 30 years of television but I made the exception for this retro classic and for John Cleese. I'm glad I did. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

As a Monty Python fan, I have to say, Fawlty Towers is the best thing any of the Pythons came up with post the Python series. Cleese is absolutely hilarious as the uptight concierge.

Lisnaholic 12-25-2022 08:06 AM

Yes, Fawlty Towers is with good reason up there in the "unassailable" category. It doesn't hurt that only 12 episodes were ever made.
In contrast, those Chuck Lorrie sitcoms (Two And A Half Big Bang Theories) are really funny at first, but kind of outstay their welcome imo. Characters start out amusing, but can get irritating by Season 27.

Guybrush 12-26-2022 12:27 AM

It's great. Though about the British Film Institute's list, it seems weird to put it above Flying Circus.

The greatest ex-python things for me are the Terry Gilliam movies Brazil and The Fisher King <3 The Fisher King kinda works as a dark Christmas movie too.

rubber soul 12-26-2022 06:10 AM

If you're talking Terry Gilliam, you should also check out the Adventures of Baron Munchausen, one of the greatest movies for children ever.

Of course I've seen Munchausen several times since my first viewing sometime in the 90s. I slightly prefer Time Bandits, though.

Munchausen might be a contender for having the best Grim Reaper in a movie.

Tonight I queued up the classic Twilight Zone episode, "A Stop At Willoughby" from 1960 for the first time. Brilliantly written, acted, and shot, and the twist gave me goosebumps like the finest speculative fiction should. I can see why the episode is a fan-favorite. They even do a subtle name-drop to "Bradbury" during the episode, as the writing style is markedly Bradburian.

Funny you mention Bradbury. Was just thinking about 'Something Wicked this way Comes' and what a brilliant/scary story it is.

The confrontation between Mr. Dark and Charles Halloway in the library... :yikes:

Amazing - I'm reading that very chapter for the first time right now! No spoilers please! :)

Now THAT is some synchronicity for ya!

That chapter was the first time a book made me literally shudder - goosebumps running up the spine and having to pause for a few ticks to gather myself.

Ghost Story by Peter Straub was another one.

The Everly Brothers: Songs of Innocence and Experience (Arena documentary)

This is superb, like most of the Arena documentaries. Lots of Everlys in Drakesboro, Kentucky.

The few I've seen (Burroughs and Genet esp) were really great. The one with Genet is unlike any other documentary: it's mostly a long interview and he's terminally ill, clearly insane and more ornery than ever... at some point he turns the tables on the interviewer and starts inciting the camera crew to revolt. The good ****

Mucha na Dziko 01-14-2023 11:14 AM

Starting today my first rewatch of the OZ tv series.

It was the first show HBO produced, so it's interesting to see where the network went since then.

I remember it as gut-wrenching, horrible, brutal and so captivating you can't take your eyes off screen. There wasn't a single bad or uninteresting character. And it all just felt super real and natural (at least until some "aging pill" disaster of a plot in one of the later seasons).

I was 17 when I watched it for the first time, so I suppose I'll experience the show very differently now.

https://i.postimg.cc/9MRsqtbN/lee-te...1508944255.jpg

Oh, yeah, and there was always this thing they did in the opening sequence, that one of the main characters would go on some random pseudo-philosophical rants or something, and though at first I thought it was cool and interesting, it got to seem pointless and kinda dumb pretty fast.

Apart from this and the pill plot line, I remember this as one of the best shows I've seen.

Wish me luck, I guess

Currently, I'm hooked on "The Crown". It's early to share a review but it's interesting so far. By the way, for those seeking new shows and movies, I stumbled upon this great resource here https://www.firestickhow.com/best-fr...ing-sites.html which lists some awesome free movie streaming sites. It's perfect for discovering more content to enjoy.

I hike short distance ( a few longer distance tracks in the past ) and for long distance I take my motorcycle, but most of the thoughts are familiar to me and i can identify with.

An an oral version of his essay and the most illuminating thing you'll ever hear about this mess. I was transfixed by the moustache at first but increasingly by his brilliance.

He briefly touches on the evolution of the idea of "Nakba", which he expands on here and that is as worth reading as anything he produces.

The bay of Saint-Malo has one of the largest tidal differences in Europe, with a difference of up to twelve meters between low and high tide. Three of the offshore islands Grand Bé and Petit Bé as well as the Fort National (fortress built by Vauban in 1689) can therefore be reached on foot at low tide. The Usine marémotrice de la Rance, the world's first and, until 2011, largest tidal power station, has been located in the estuary of the Rance since 1966.
